Non-Smoking Rooms

The problem (as seen through the eyes of management) with smoke-free clubs is that the alienated smokers don't buy as much alcohol. The sale of alcohol is a major profit center for any cruise line.

Dave, I think you hit the nail on the head.
I'm happy to report that on our cruise this weekend, smoking wasn't much of a problem. No smell from the verandah next door (we only have one neighbor in 5650 anyway, so it's only been a problem once). I don't think they were even smokers. It was stinky in Wavebands, but that's an ongoing problem because of ventilation and setup (I never understand why clubs, restaurants, etc. set uo non-smoking areas right next to smoking, with absolutely no barrier). But I expect that in Wavebands and only go for special events (Match Your Mate and 70s Party, where you've up dancing a lot of the time anyway).
I will bring up one issue that no one has mentioned so far...smokers on Castaway Cay. On Serenity Bay, most of the chairs are quite close to each other, and I must have that special radar that attracts smokers to set up in the chairs right next to me. The radar was working this trip, as the smokers next to me chain smoked and I breathed it the whole while I was lying in my hammock (maybe they were trying to drive me out of it so they could take it over!). Also, I have never yet seen a smoker on the beach use an ashtray, and I find LOTS of butts all over in the sand...ugh! I don't know if this is a problem on the family beach, which is more spread out, but it definitely is on Serenity Bay.
Oh well, I usually end up near a stinky cigar smoker, too, but Mr. Stink was much farther down the beach, near the entrance, this time.

I am a nonsmoker but I am offended by the way some people here think they should treat smokers. I can sort of understand the club issue but just as someone else brought up, I have asthma and am terribly allergic to perfumes but there are NO perfume free zones for me. I don't go around suggesting we spray people down with liquid for my convenience. I have to bear it or leave. As far as the veranda issue goes ... People get a private veranda for a reason. It's supposed to be their special place where they can do whatever they wish. I have no problem with DCL designating a portion of the ship where rooms as completely nonsmoking but we should try and have a little more tolerance for our fellow passengers until that happens.

Wife, kids and I hate smoking. Wife and I have been on six cruises, Disney was the best for avoiding smoking. Wife says she smelled smoke once on the Veranda, and we only ventured into a club once after 9 pm when smoking is allowed.
We were on the Magic for the 12-27-03 cruise.
We sailed to Alaska on the Amsterdam in June 2002, they restricted smoking, but it was always allowed in the casino and the sports bar next to it, sadly, they were in the middle of the ship and we frequently had to walk through those areas.
I dropped a whole dollar in the casino before the smoke got to me, dumped the remaining $9 from my roll of quarters in the washing machines and dryers!!!

I am allergic to smoke too. It can be a touchy situation, but you can ASK someone to help you out.

I have told others around me that my son and husband have asthma. I suppose if I were in a situation with the verandahs...I would try and ask for a "courteous" system of taking turns, setting "smoke free" hours, or at least giving a heads up when someone is going to light up?
