I heard this LOUD scratching sound. I thought it was the cat caught on something (even though her collar is a breakaway). So Im franically calling for the cat who finallly rolls over and meows at me from the bed. Well then panic sets in as I hear the noise again. A loud scratching sound like something scratching metal trying to get in. Well, I start tapping the celing with a bat and the noise stops and its been silent now for almost a hour. I contacted the landlord but am currious what it may be.

It's probably a squirrel. Are you on the top floor?

We had that same problem last year. It turned out to be flying squirrels getting caught in the wall. They found a small hole and flew in looking for warmth. An exterminator put a mesh thing over the hole and we haven't had them back this year.

I thought you were living back home with your parents or grandparents? :confused3

If not - and you're on the top floor - yeah, probably a squirrel or something.. Nothing to panic over..:goodvibes

I never moved home, Ive said that many times. I chose to stay on my own after I spent a week at home and was SO DONE with my sisters.

We had squirrels in the roof of our old house. They were most active between 4-5am - so if you hear activity early in the morning, there's your answer! It can seriously drive you mad, having to hear the scratching & scurrying when you're trying to sleep, so be sure the landlord follows up on this.

Maybe mice....or a tiny little ax murderer.

Tiny? Whatever up there is loud. I was stunned when the cats wouldnt even enter the room!!! They love noises! I do live in the city.
Edit:
Landlord emailed back
"Let me know if you hear these noises again as #1 did have mice last winter and I had traps set up in their apartment." Wait... IN???? YIKES!!! If I see a mouse all heck is gonna break loose!!!

If you do end up setting up mouse traps, be careful of where they are placed. You don't want one of your cats or hammybut getting into them.

ive never seem a mouse in the house so I wouldnt allow traps inside. Either shes gonna put them in the attic or shes gonna have to get the humane box ones (even though if they catch something ill be dragging a neigbor in to empty them...) I think shes gonna have to set traps though just for my peice of mind. It took me two hours to fall asleep thinking of the creepy crawlies in the celing above the bed (though killer-cat sleeping with me helped)

With 2 cats I wouldn't worry a second over it and don't think you'll need traps of any kind. Whatever it is that is scratching will eventually get a wiff of your cats and move on to somewhere else less dangerous. Even if something does manage to wander in it will have a very short life. Kitties are cool for this sort of thing.

It could be any number of things but most likely mice. Squirrels, racoons and bats are known to get into attics and make scratcing noises. If it is a larger animal like a raccoon the entry point is usually visible from the outside. Even though mice are small they really do make some noise. We built a new house about ten years ago and the first winter we had noises in the ceiling between the first and second floor. I figured it had to be a mouse but it took forever to find where they were coming in at. I finally found a very small crack between the brick and foundation that I sealed and haven't had a problem since.

Even a tiny mouse can make a loud scratching noise. It must be that time of year because we started hearing scratching in the wall a couple of weeks ago. The exterminator put little bags of mouse bait in the attic and crawl space and the sounds disappeared by the end of the next day. Exterminators don't usually put anything out to catch the mouse, the bait they put out makes the mice thristy, they then leave your house and go outside for a water source. The bait and water then combine to kill the mouse. This way you don't have to get rid of the mouse and it won't die inside your wall/attic and cause a bad odor.

It wouldnt worry so much if my bed wernt under the spot. See my cats were breed to leave mice alone (I have a hammy as a pet), so they would just back it into a corner and whine. My new kitty would probley rip a head off or two.
