No Work and All Play – Disney on the Company’s Dime! (8/1 There and Back Again)

Wow - Captain Planet - haven't heard that name in a while... :goodvibes
Japan was fun but I'd definitely rate United Kingdom, China, and Germany as the family's favorites.

As for the trip reports, I'm definitely all about the details.
That's my favorite part of the Disney experience!
Before getting addicted, I read some reports and made notes of all the "little things."
So I try to share that stuff and possibly even point out something new to fellow DIS'ers that they can look for next time around!
And the more details, the better the story, and hopefully the more enjoyable for everyone!

Yeah good old Captain Planet , the kiddies & I still catch his show a lot on Boomerang :) In fact on Earth Day they had an all day marathon on :thumbsup2

You def do an awesome job with your trip reports :thumbsup2

Thanks for the kind words.
Hopefully I can live up to them! :goodvibes

Now that I had saved the world three times over, it was time to sit back and relax.
And what better way to do that than with a show! popcorn::
It’s been many years since I’ve seen the American Adventure as I didn’t think my little ones could sit through it.
My oldest is now 8 and we expect to try it next time around.
But since I was on my own and had nothing left on the agenda than to explore, I figured I was allowed to go see good ol’ Ben Franklin myself!
By now it was about 2:10 so I was in luck!
IOUG2009634.jpg

I wandered into the gorgeous mansion which actually uses forced perspective to look smaller!
Take a look and see what you think…
IOUG2009635.jpg

The “pre-show” was going on inside the lobby as the Voices of Liberty were singing their hearts out.
IOUG2009637.jpg

However, I was into the details.
As they sang, I wandered the lobby a bit looking for stuff I’ve never noticed before.
I started with the portrait at the entrance to the attraction…
IOUG2009639.jpg

As I wandered, I had a chance to read a lot and enjoy the atmosphere of the lobby.
It’s funny – with everyone crowded around the Voices of Liberty, all the displays were empty and easy to stroll by.
And I still was able to enjoy the Voices of Liberty as I explored them all.

Finally, the concert ended and the masses began to line up at the rope where I already was situated.
IOUG2009638.jpg

Deciding to play a bit, I stretched out across the rope and took a shot to my left.
Surprisingly, it came out and I didn’t fall.
Voila! The entrance escalators complete with American flags.
IOUG2009641.jpg

And then the stereotypical flag shot while riding the famed escalators…
IOUG2009642.jpg

Upon entering the theatre, I had to try and get the famous statues as well.
It’s interesting that they aren’t famous Americans but American ideals.
I always kinda like the ship captain hunched over the steering wheel.
Bonus points for anyone who can remember all the ideals or, more specifically, the one with the ship captain!
And no cheating by looking them up!!!
IOUG2009646.jpg

IOUG2009647.jpg

Now I put the camera away and enjoyed the show.
It’s nice and relaxing in the air conditioning and the show itself is an amazing feat of audio animatronics.
I know that one of the behind the scene tours shows off the monstronsity that is the engine beneath the stage that queues and arranges all of the figures.
I can’t wait until the kids are older so we can go on those tours! :cool1:

I always like this show.
If you’re not humming an American theme in your head upon exit, something’s wrong.
This must be great to do on July 4th!! :goodvibes

And I love how, on the way out, you can see the words to On Golden Dreams (or is it On Golden Wings – I always forget) :
IOUG2009649.jpg

So, not a very action-packed update.
But after all that world saving, I needed a break and this was it.
Cool air conditioning, a great show, and a taste of America before I headed off to explore some more of the World Showcase!
Ah, but the question remains – which direction to I go? :confused3
Any guesses?

Gosh?? Hmmm.... is it fortitude? or maybe exploration??

I'm so going to get that flag shot! That is awesome! :thumbsup2

I love the American Adventure even if we don't seem to make it there every trip! Great picture of the flags :thumbsup2

Huh, I didn't think I'd really be interested in the American Adventure but now I'm wondering if I should give it a shot. About how long is the show? Maybe I should try it out! For that matter, what World Showcase presentations should I really not miss?

I thought it was a great update. I want to hear the Voices of Liberty! :thumbsup2

I don't think it's either of those.
Now I may have to look it up myself!

Thanks - I love those flag pics.
It's neat to see all the former American flags together.

The show lasts about 30 minutes.
It's a mixture of film clips and audio animatronics.
If you're a history buff, it's awesome!
They cover some big moments in American history including the Civil War and women's rights movements.
And your "hosts" are Ben Franklin and Mark Twain.
All in all, a great show and a nice time to unwind a bit after alot of running around.
I recommend everyone see it at least once!

As for other World Showcase highlights, I love to explore the "backs" of each pavillion as there are plenty of surprises.
But as for the stuff I try to do every trip:

Gran Fiesta Tour and pics with Donald in Mexico
Maelstrom, troll pics, and Akershus in Norway
Pics with Mulan in China (sometimes we catch the Dragon Legend Acrobats)
Pics with Snow White and Biergarten in Germany (such a fun experience!)
Explore the pier across from Italy to relive Venice
Fife and Drum Corps and American Adventure in America
Listen to the drums in Japan and check out the current exhibit in the castle
Pics with Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie in Morocco (and wander into the back of the pavillion to take in the sights)
Find Belle's Library and then take pics with Aurora, Belle, and Beast in France
Pics with Mary Poppins and Alice outside the UK and pics with Pooh inside the Toy Solider
Then wander into the back to let the kids run through the Hedge Maze
Lastly, watch "O'Canada" and wander past the waterfalls and the gardens in Canada.
Also, try to catch either the British Invasion in the UK or Off Kilter in Canada
With little ones, make plenty of Kidcot stops.
And for both the young and old, try out all the new Kim Possible missions!
There! That should keep you busy!! :thumbsup2

Just wanted to let you know I'm enjoying reading your trip report; it's one of the things I used as a break while studying for a major test.

Also, I'd really appreciate if you didn't strand boxmaster in Disney as you threatened, there's a bunch of people who would rather their leader not abandon them, and being second in command, I'd really prefer not to take over his work load while he gets to enjoy the most magical place on earth.

What, you would begrudge me an extended break in WDW?! :sad2: Hmph! :rotfl2:

Team Boxmaster is speaking up for him, eh?
We'll have to take that into consideration if we decide to strand him! ;)

Well, since you now view it as a reward, we'll have to think of something else to threaten you with...

Thanks to Dawn (dawnbu40), our awesome new travel agent, we are now official!
The Capells will be heading back to the World January 22, 2011!!
Now I just need to get the trip reports done before we leave!! :rotfl:

The only problem is that now you'll know all our surprises before the TR!
No fair!! :confused3

I'm sure I won't know all your surprises! I bet Mike keeps a lot of secrets! :) I will look forward to reading about all of your adventures and seeing the pics! :goodvibes

After a good dose of patriotism, it was time to explore once again!
I decided to continue on counter-clockwise (a direction I never usually take across the World Showcase).
Which, of course, brings me to Italy!
IOUG2009654.jpg

To be honest, I’ve never really liked the Italy pavilion.
I’ve heard not-so-good things about the restaurant, we were never interested in the shops, and there’s not too much else to do there.
Needless to say, I’m very excited about Via Napoli since how can you not go to Italy and get pizza?!?!?

For now, I decided to explore and see if I could find some hidden gems.
I’ve read once upon a time there was a secret location from which you can blast water at people in the plaza but I couldn’t find it.
Does anyone know if that still exists?

Instead I decided to go see some old friends - Lady and the Tramp.
The topiaries were set up for the Flower and Garden festival and there was no line.
Unfortunately, there was no Photopass photographer either.
So I had to make due with my own skills…
IOUG2009656.jpg

Next I wandered into the back of the plaza.
The statue of Neptune (or Poseidon – depending on which mythology you use) is always very regal.
IOUG2009657.jpg

I’m excited to see what happens once this back area opens up to Via Napoli.
I imagine it will change the landscape significantly and I think that could only be a good thing here.
But here’s where I started finding some “hidden gems.”
First, when I started back to the lagoon, I noticed a very neat vantage point of the pavilion.
I don’t think I’ve seen this angle very much so I figured it was worth a shot:
IOUG2009659.jpg

But rather than leave the pavilion right now, I wandered the outsides of the “Merchants of Venice” to see the architectural details.
One of the highlights was this little guy just sitting in the wall of one of the shops guarding it from evil I imagine.
Maybe that’s why there’s no Kim Possible Adventure here – Italy has it’s own protectors!
IOUG2009660.jpg

After wandering the streets, I crossed the walkway outside the pavilion toward the lagoon.
And found a whole new area of Italy to explore that I bet many miss on an average hectic day!
This side of the pavilion is modeled after Venice – the City of Lights.
First, you can enjoy the fountains with the great view of Spaceship Earth
IOUG2009650.jpg

Then the famous striped poles and lanterns from the canals and waterways of the city.
Here are some with yet another shot of the iconic Spaceshipe Earth in the distance.
IOUG2009651.jpg

Of course, with those canals, one might expect some gondolas.
And, since this is Italy, those expectations would only prove to be correct.
Lined up nicely and just awaiting weary travelers, are several of the city’s finest crafts waiting to taxi you to your destination.
IOUG2009652.jpg

Continuing over the bridge, I found a Photopass photographer just standing there lonely.
I could not allow that!
So first, I asked for a shot on my camera.
Take a look at this one and see if you can tell if I’m in Italy or Epcot…
IOUG2009653.jpg

Yeah, Spaceship Earth probably gives it away.
But if we photoshop that out, I bet it would be hard to figure it out!
The photographer then got a nice closeup of me and the Epcot icon.
Once again – fun angle that I never thought of before (I’ve never seen Photopass photographers over here before).
Photopass2009333.jpg

I crossed back over the bridge to the main walkway and noticed on the other side, a gondola had just returned to the plaza.
This one deserved a better picture to appreciate the details of these works of art.
IOUG2009655.jpg

I always wished Epcot would consider using these gondolas for a short trek around the World Showcase Lagoon in lieu of an Italy attraction.
It would be a nice touch.
I am also surprised they never added a Pinocchio, Gepetto, and Jiminy Cricket Meet and Greet here similar to the princesses.
That would be awesome as they tend to be rarer characters and harder to find.

Ah, well – at least I found areas worth visiting on my next visit to Italy.
Now I don’t need to just speed along on my way to the next country!
Speaking of next countries, looks like we’re headed on a trip into Deutschland.
But, before we go, say goodbye to the great little donkey cart!
IOUG2009661.jpg

Great update especially for someone who claims they never liked that pavillion! Your pictures really capture the beauty of that area :thumbsup2

You definitely get a whole new respect for the pavillion when you get a chance to explore all the nooks and crannies!!

Thanks for the kind words.
Hopefully I can live up to them! :goodvibes

Awe your welcome :)

Your American Adventure pictures are great ! I haven't actually ever seen but a few pictures of this attraction on the inside . You did a great job giving me a refresher on what it looked like since we also never get to do this attraction w/ our kiddies being too young :)

Great Italy pictures , you captured a lot of details I have never noticed before ! I will def have to take a closer look at that pavilion in September :thumbsup2

Congrats on booking your next trip & through Dawn how cool !!

We really do make some great friendships here on the boards

I think that was my goal.
Since I was alone and had the time, I was determined to find things in Italy that made it worthwhile.
It's still my least favorite pavillion but I now know there's some fun stuff if you just look for the details!

I'm not a big fan of Italy either; it's just begging an attraction of SOME kind- ANY kind will do. Another restaurant isn't exactly what I was hoping for. Ah well... whatcha gonna do? :confused3 You're right, a gondola ride would be really a nice touch, even if you had to make a ressie and pay some.

But like you showed, it is a Pav. that lends itself nicely to photography. I plan to do some of that myself.
