No Work and All Play – Disney on the Company’s Dime! (8/1 There and Back Again)

In case you wondered, I hummed along one of John William's crowning glories- Raiders. What a legend!! :cloud9:

This reminds me I really need to get myself some Berkeley and Cagney stuff. Never seen anything done by them.

We saw both versions last trip. Asked to wait for the one we hadn't. Worth it? I don't know. A twister leading in would have been really cool!

Yes, finding the right duds to wear is very fun- for sure!

By the way, I gave you a rousing shout out over on my report. Check it out. You may pick up some folks from over there. Hope so- yours is a TR worth spending time in.

Thanks for the shout out - I'll have to go check it out!
But first, another segment...

I’ve heard lots of good things about this exhibit and I figured my best shot to see it was on my own.
The little ones would get bored pretty quick in here.
IOUG2009222.jpg

It starts off with a large poster wall of Walt and Mickey riding through their park.
What a site that must’ve been!
IOUG2009223.jpg

Inside the walls are a timeline of facts and events of Walt’s life leading up to and through the creation of his movies and theme parks.
I was most intrigued by the props and models of attractions like this one of the Jungle Cruise:
IOUG2009226.jpg

And the costume Julie Andrews wore in Mary Poppins:
IOUG2009228a.jpg

Futher into the exhibit, you could see many of the models for the park icons.
From Spaceship Earth
IOUG2009229.jpg

to Cinderella’s Castle.
IOUG2009230.jpg

Across the sea there's Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland Paris.
IOUG2009232.jpg

Then back to Florida for Typhoon Lagoon
IOUG2009234a.jpg

and the Tree of Life
IOUG2009235.jpg

Finally some icons of the current park included the Sorcerer’s Hat
IOUG2009237.jpg

and the Tower of Terror
IOUG2009236a.jpg

In addition, there was a wall highlighting the Studios’ most recent attractions
IOUG2009238.jpg

But the piece de resistance, IMHO, was the ultimate fan room.
This area, built by the attraction’s new sponsor D23 showed that us DIS’ers aren’t the only Disney fanatics out there.
Sorry it’s so blurry – not sure what happened there…
IOUG2009233a.jpg

If you look closely, you can see everything from Snow White all the way through WALL-E.
That’s what my home office needs to look like. ;)

The exhibit ends at the entrance to a theatre detailing more about Walt.
I decided to skip this as the toys were due back any minute now.
I headed back down Pixar Place and across from Toy Story Midway Mania.
Come on back for the inside scoop of the new Toy Story Meet and Greet!

Great update on One Man's Dream! :thumbsup2 I love going there and seeing the history of Disney! I think it is a wonderful tribute to Walt and a must see for Disney fans!

Wow - quick response!
It was definitely interesting material.
And you can spend hours in there if you really go through everything.
Like I said, not a place for kids - they'll get bored.
But definitely a haven for Disney fanatics.
And I sooooo want that room. :)

I am really regretting that we didn't make time for this exhibit. It will be tops on my list for November!

Denise

This attraction is nearly at the tippy top of my Must-do list for Sept! All that history in one place- awesome!

Again, looks like a 10 minute walk throught sort of thing, right??

It's a good thing to do while you wait for your Toy Story fastpass.

The walk-thru is as long as you want it to be.
You could probably spend hours in there if you read and go through everything.
But it's probably best enjoyed a little at a time.
I think I spent about 10-15 minutes going through rather quickly.
I stuck mostly to the models and skipped the film at the end.

I think this is exactly why we have never been able to tour this attraction !

Great picture of Walt & Mickey, never have seen it before.Loved looking at all of the model pictures and boy what a office collection that was , wouldn't we all like to have a collection like that !

Yeah, how cool would it have been to see Mickey and Walt just driving down Main Street? :cool1:

How would that work with the dragon motif you've got going? I think they'd rise up and breathe some fire on you if you tried to push them out. :scared1:

I guess you'll just have to put an addition onto the house for a new Disney wing. Yeah, that'll do it. :lmao:

My Disney Darling,
If we are planning an addition on the house, I demand an extra walk-in closet for our Disney clothes!! And a craft/sewing room so I can make us some more! ::yes::
Thanks Pookie!

Now that's the ticket!! :thumbsup2

Across the walkway from Toy Story Midway Mania, there’s a door with most likely a line stretching along the wall.
Without much signage or fanfare, this is the new Meet and Greet for the Toy Story characters.
The queue is designed to be “interactive” and offers photo ops along the way.
The design takes you through the movies entering into different scenes.
At the entrance is a map showing you the layout and there are directions on the floor.
In addition, at each photo op, there is a set of footprints indicating the best vantage point for taking the picture.
This would be great if it wasn’t so crowded all the time since it’s hard to hang back and stand on the feet while the little ones are in the photo op.
I’ve found that while you are setting up, other people’s little ones charge ahead and their parents don’t stop them.
This was especially hard touring solo as I was trying to get shots of the photo ops themselves.
But if a child saw an empty one, they ran ahead and jumped into my photos.

Despite my issues, it was still better than standing in line with nothing to do.
And I thought how much more fun it would be with the kids next time.
So, let’s go through it.

The first area is Andy’s Room.
The background is Andy’s bed and the photo op is to take a ride in Buzz’s spaceship.
IOUG2009240.jpg

This is one of the most popular (as you could imagine).
From Andy’s Room, we head to Pizza Planet to join the Little Green Men.
IOUG2009241.jpg

This one is a lot of fun as well.
And it’s hard to take the picture without thinking “The craaaaaaane” or “I have been chosen!”
Next up, we head to Sid’s room.
There’s some foreground imagery of some of his toys as well as this background:
IOUG2009242.jpg

It’s hard to take pictures here as it’s the corner of the room and the lines basically take you right next to most of the displays.
And there’s no place to back up in order to get a wider shot.
Oh well…

The Evil Zurg is up next.
I liked this one but it’s hard to get the right angle here.
Standing on the footprints is key here but it’s hard as they are far from the wall and people will jump in front of you.
IOUG2009243.jpg

Across from Zurg is a rocketship with Velcro straps hanging off it.
The idea is to wrap your children up in the Velcro to simulate being strapped to the rocket as it takes off during the finale of Toy Story.
A cute idea but the Velcro is used and battered and barely works anymore.
So I didn’t take a picture here.

Jumping into Toy Story 2, we meet the Prospector next and you can pretend you are the one in the package.
IOUG2009248.jpg

I finally decided, I need to be in one of these pics, so I asked the person next to me and they kindly obliged:
IOUG2009247.jpg

Last stop is the airport.
The background shows the luggage carousels criss-crossing throughout the airport.
And if you look closely, you can see the gang trying to save Jessie from the luggage.
IOUG2009250.jpg

The photo op is in the foreground where you can pretend to be in the luggage stuck with Jessie.
IOUG2009251.jpg

Then you see a CM who gives you the standard Photopass instructions.
And, around the corner is Andy’s bed complete with your favorite characters and a Photopass photographer!
This is a great idea since the kids aren’t jumping ahead in line to see the chars since they don’t even know they are there!
They were glad to see me and shook my hand
Photopass2009232.jpg

Before posing all together.
What a bunch of toys!
Photopass2009236.jpg

Then I headed back into the alley that is Pixar Place.
On the way back to the front of the park, I noticed another detail of the Toy Story gift shop.
The ceiling is made of the old Battleship game:
IOUG2009252.jpg

But I had no time for shopping – it was off to the Magic of Animation to see what I could find.
Anyone tired yet?
Can you believe it's still the same day?

I like how they've made the character line so interactive; hopefully it helps make the wait a bit easier for the little ones! :goodvibes

Denise

I can't even believe how much you are getting done this day! What a touring maniac you are!

That ceiling in the dump shop is pretty cool- stuff like that, man, is what keeps me coming back!! Creative to the hilt!

Great update :thumbsup2 We just love the Toy Store Meet & Greet ! You def have to do it with your family next time , looks like you had a blast . I never noticed that the gift shop ceiling was the battleship game either , too cute !

It's a little hectic but the kids are kept busy.

Touring solo offers lots of freedom...

I did, in fact, take the kids in November when we headed back to the World.
But that's in the next trip report!!
