No more unlimited refills on resort mugs?

So it's true that they limit how much you can use it in a single visit?

I have no problem with buying a new mug each visit, because those are 2+ years apart and by the time I get back my old mug is usually pretty ratty anyway.

But it does bum me out if I'll be halfway through my vacation and my mug just stops working.

It shouldn't stop working during your trip. It might be something like 30 days before they stop working. Long enough to work for your whole trip but short enough so they don't work when you return.

But this doesn't solve any problems.

They will still need to have a soda machine for the standard, single-use cups that people buy if they don't have mugs.

If people are using old mugs, they will just go to the other machines without the microchips, correct?

The only other alternative would be to have microchips on disposable cups which does not seem cost affective

There are two options:

1) Create 2 separate "filling station": One behind the area where the cashiers are. This is for your first mug fill up and for the paper cups. The other "filling station" is out in the table/customer area. This will only work for RFID enabled cups.

2) Have RFID stickers on the bottom of the paper cups. Really..not very expensive to implement. And, if you want to get uber-picky, you can tie those RFID stickers on the paper cups to a time stamp AND a dispensed amount, so you could effectively limit refills on them, as well.

They are not limiting how many times you fill it. It is still unlimited refills. The only stipulation is that there will be a 5 minute lock out from when you completely fill the cup. This means that if you want to mix 1/2 coke and 1/2 diet you still can, but once the dispeser has totalled up the correct amount of ounces for your specific cup, you will then be unable to start a refill until your 5 minutes is up. Your mug will work for the entire duration of your stay.:thumbsup2

I don't think this has been implemented yet. As far as I know, it will just be tried at All-Star Sports to start with. So, it wouldn't have affected your recent use.

from what I have read, Monday, July 18, will be the start date at All Star Sports only.

Unless the refill stations are set up to ONLY refill mugs with chips installed in them...and not dispense anything if they don't detect a chip.

which is how it works at the water parks. At the wp you can bring back your old mugs but in order to have them work you have to buy a new bar scanner. teh machines will not work without them. if you want a single soda you go to the counter service.

Nevermind.

Looks like Validfill is probably their direction....

The regular cups will have chips. I have a friend who saw one of the cups with a chip on it. She didn't see mugs with chips but she did see the cups.

The question on my friend's website had to do with (DVC) resorts that had a microwave. You can't microwave the chips. So no reheating coffee in the microwave in your mug.

If it really true that Disney used to sell the mugs with the terms "bring back and use it for future visits"? That seems weird to me. If it is true, how do they account for people who received those terms?

And about people "cheating", if i'm staying at the Contemporary Resort, i'm gonna bring my mug from 2004 that has the Resort logo and everything on it. Why pay 15 bucks every year. Who cares what kind of mug people use.

...aaaand here's why this is being implemented. Thanks for helping Disney prove a point! :thumbsup2

I agree. Just last week I walked into Crystal Palace for breakfast, grabbed a plate and started eating. I told the CM "I paid for this buffet last year. Why should I have to pay again?" :lmao:

I hear you. I paid for a Disney vacation last year, and NOW they want me to pay AGAIN for this year's trip! Way to be greedy Disney! :rotfl:
:lmao::lmao:

This is the classic example of Disney trying to do something "special" for the guests only to be kicked in the groin but people that cannot follow specific rules or CM's that either don't know the rules or have been instructed not to have a confrontation over a soft drink.

The points brought up magnify the problem the occurs when people decide to make their own rules or lay to rest their common sense long enough to take advantage of someones mistake.

No company in their right mind would ever say..."here, buy this mug for $12.00 and we will continue to fill it for life." No company would do that. So just because a CM or someone says it because they misunderstood the rule doesn't mean that you (generically) do not have to reach into your own set of moral standards and decide what the right thing to do becomes. I am not going to stand in judgment of anyone. If you can honestly feel that this is right, and it makes sense, then, by all means, fill up a 55 gallon drum if your want too.

The very action that they are trying to implant chips in the cups to stop the flagrant abuse, should be reason enough to ask yourselves if maybe that was the intent to begin with.

I think they said that they are going to attempt the chip method throughout. So the result is that the person with the old mug will probably not be argued with but they will be given the option of trading in the old one for a new one, only good for that trip. If they decide to keep the old one, then the will be required to pay when they use it.

If people would have followed the rules to begin with or if Disney had the kahunas to enforce their own policy, it never would have come to this, so they are only to blame themselves with a lot of help from us.

Totally agree! :thumbsup2

I'm guessing that the use period for a mug will be the same as MYW tickets; they will be good for 14 days from first use. This would put the mugs in line with theme park admission for how most people tour.

This is only Phase I of the program watch for future Phases to include:

Finger scan: no sharing mugs between people and no selling unused mug days to another family when you leave after 5 days

Resort Hopper fee: Want to use your mug at more than 1 resort during your trip, ante up.

Non-Expiring fee: Want to use that mug for 14 days over three years? There's a fee for that.

:)

Disney will fall back on their old standby:

Everything is subject to change, without notice.

DISNEY only had the policy that you could reuse mugs "forever" (and only at the resort you purchased them from) for a relatively short time back in the 90's. I'm guessing there are, relatively, very few of those mugs still kicking around (especially ones that are still discernable as BEING Disney Resort mugs).

CM's have told people they have that perk, more recently...but Disney has made it clear that's not the company policy. Just like companies will tell you they are not responsible for "misprints" in their fliers and catalogs due to human error.....Disney would make the same case, here.

We've never abused the FREE refill's with our mugs, so it's not a worry. ;)

It was longer then that. We went on our first trip in the early 2000's, trying to remember the exact year, I think it was 2003. We went on the great military deal they had that year: free ticket for military member, 5 more 5 day hoppers with water parks for $99 each. Shades of Green was renovating so they moved everybody to the Contemporary. We bought the mugs, still have a few in the cabinet, and they're stamped with the lifetime statement. (Can't remember the exact wording on them and the dishwasher is running)

If you don't get the unlimited refills mug, just want a single cup of coffee or soda, I understand that you would receive a cup with a chip on it. My question is, would there be a refill or two allowed on these singular purchase cups? It is common practice that a place with self-serve soda/coffee dispensers allows free refills. Restaurantosaurus comes to mind. Also McDonald's. What do you think Disney policy would be?

Good question.

They could limit it by number of ounces (say 2 fills per cup) or by time (say 1 hour from purchase) along with the "one fill every 5 minutes" restriction that seems to be on all cups...or they could simply say you get one fill per rfid.

The tech allows them to do any of those things. We'll have to wait and see which path they choose.

The paper cups will likely have a 1-2 hour activation allowing for refills to be made during the course of that time. Long enough for one to get refills during the duration of a meal, but not long enough that one would keep their cup morning to night to try to get free refills all day.:thumbsup2

The only annoying (and it's only slightly so) part of this will involve our morning coffee run.

We, occasionally, buy 2 mugs when we go.....largely for use for morning coffee (and/or evening hot chocolate, depending on the time of year). However, when I go down, I typically bring one Disney mug, and our 2 travel mugs. I use the Disney mug to fill the travel mugs. Now I'll have to either just bring the 2 Disney mugs down, then bring them up and transfer in the room...or carry 4 mugs down (2 Disney, 2 travel) so I can transfer the coffee to travel mugs and bring with us to the parks.

I'd gladly use the resort mugs, only...if they kept anything hot for more than 10 minutes.

It's nitpicking, to be sure, and I'll deal with the inconvenience...because I know it's one of the few legit uses in a slew of what Disney considers illegitimate ones. Still...it may just prompt me to use our in room coffee pot (or to bring our own) a lot more often.

Now that I read the Vaildfil Website that was posted, this makes sense. In my earlier post, I was assuming a cup with a embedded RFID. But a sticker on Disney disposable stock would work too.
