No more reselling kids clothes???

That's well-intentioned, but awful. Way to make the poor people poorer. I hope that the government has a subsidy planned for the people who can't afford to buy their children brand new clothes. There are so many families out there that depend on secondhand childrens clothes, whether they are purchased, swapped, or donated.

Children's clothing only has a limited lifetime anyway, shouldn't they be testing *new* children's clothing? It's not like clothing/toys will spontaneously grow lead or toxic substances, therefore in time, this "Act" won't be needed because clothing and toys will be lead/toxin free to begin with?

I read that last week too.. I think 2-09-09 is the official date... that means no more ebay .. no more garage sales or even craigslist!

I'm not sure what we'll do! I rarely buy my kids new clothes. It'd cost a fortune to keep a nice wardrobe for them without ebay or garage sales. I don't really think it can be as enforced as they are wanting it to be!

I think the bigger question is why should we, the consumer, have to deal with this? Why aren't they dealing with it on a higher level? If it's already out here being used, then it's too late. They should be doing something about all of the lead-tainted items being imported from China!

This is one of the most craziest things I have read in a long time! What is the world coming to? What will they do to enforce this on ebay? I have bought and sold a lot of kids cloths and items on ebay... how will they enforce the law? Fine Ebay members? Arrest people holding yard sales? Total BS...

I can think ofso many other things the Gov't should be spending their time and money on... A good intention, but is it reality? No.

I live in Atlanta and each year they do a HUGE consignment sale for kids, this year it starts around the 17th and am very interested in this law (for many reasons) and about the sale. As of right now the sale is set to take place.

All of my local donation places have already stopped accepting any baby items or children's toys. Unfortunately, many of our children's toys are now going to the landfill.

I gave up on reselling the kids' clothes to OUAC and don't have the time/energy for a yard sale. Luckily, I know a couple with children about 1 year younger than each of mine so have been giving them hand-me-downs of the better stuff which they appreciate.

I don't buy much of my kids' stuff used. Mostly, I try to rely on on out-of-season sales. Still, in this economic downturn, especially, I could foresee where this law could really cause people some hardship. Not to mention that it will drive up the cost of sale clothing as more people as there is more demand... and that could trickle up to overall increases on new children's clothing.

There's an article in the LA Times about it, so it certainly appears to be legit. It's the first I've heard of it.

I'm torn about it. Obviously I want our kids to be safe, but it seems like it's throwing the baby out with the bath water to condemn everything to landfills.

On a more personal note, I've funded my kid's wardrobes by selling their outgrown clothing at one of those big semi-annual consignment sales. I've made anywhere from $300-$700 at each of those sales, more then enough to cover their wardrobes for the next season (when bought at rock bottom clearance prices, anyway). It'll definitely hurt my wallet if I can't buy or sell used clothing

Amen! This is the dumbest idea ever. They should stop this stuff from entering the system at the source.

I don't really think this will affect private garage sales. Who is going to shut them down for kids clothes and toys?

If there is indeed a threat here, it sounds like the govt did not do it's job keeping these items off the market in the first place and is placing the burden of testing on the individual.

We have donated loads of things to Goodwill, in fact I have Little Tikes Grandmas House (doll house) that I was fixin' to donate on our next run. It is upsetting to me that it might end up in the landfill...

if anything, it will make yard sales more attractive .. if there's no more selling on ebay, thrift stores, consignment sales, Craigslist .. you're left with giving away clothes to friends (because charities won't take them), throwing the clothes away, or yard sales.

Well if it does happen maybe Goodwill will give everything away free Feb 9. I'm really hoping this is just poorly understood or my kids are going to school in high waters next year.

From what I've read this law only affects businesses. Carter's (as the manufacturer) would be affected, as would Carson's (as the seller) but it will not affect Mary Carter, who is having a garage sale and selling Susie's jeans and snowsuit to Sherry Carson.
