Just got home from our local Disney Store. Went to buy Disney Dollars for the kids to earn for doing chores for our first trip to WDW and the CM said they no longer sell Disney Dollars in stores. Only in the parks. :furious:

We've bought them at this store in the past and she didn't give me a reason why. She just said they only do gift cards now. Needless to say the kids were disappointed, as were DH and I, but the CM felt so bad she brought the kids each a bag full of goodies (stickers, memory card game, tattoos, an Olaf puzzle, and lots of other goodies, so that took care of their disappointment, but not mine.

Has anyone else heard/experienced this? Is it true?

They haven't been sold in stores for several years. It's such a shame. I miss getting disney dollars for upcoming trips.

I don't know if it is still possible but for some time after they stopped selling them at the Disney Stores you could order them from the parks. I never did it but I heard of others that did. I think that the fee for them being ordered and mailed was high.

Another idea would be to print your own "disney dollars" at home that the kids could earn and exchange for a gift card before the trip.

I'd guess it's been around 4 years since this happened. I have a stash of Disney Dollars that I had purchased from the Disney Store and the parks. I recycle these. DD earns them for extra chores and things, then before our trip, we count them up and purchase a gift card in that amount. The Disney Dollars get put back in my kitchen drawer for future use.

When I first went to Disney with my daughter in 2008, I made my own Disney Dollars for her.

I found a template for "fake money", and I cut & pasted Disney characters onto them. Then printed them out on hard-stock photo paper. She could earn them, which at age 5 took very little. She pays me with the Disney Dollars and I buy the stuff she wants with it.

This year she's 11, and I did the same thing (with more stuff like "Dog with a blog" instead of Little Einsteins), and she can still earn them but its a little harder now :) She has the potential to earn $60 in Disney Dollor, and she's up to about $25.

I don't know if it's allowed on here since I'm using pics of Disney characters, but if someone says it's ok i'll post them. If not, PM me and I can send them to you.

With such a prevalence of Gift cards now, even local stores no longer sell "gift certificates" or any kind of paper redemption product. Sad kind of. Disney dollars are a great incentive tool and gift cards do not come in one dollar denominations.

I agree with that timeframe.

Just make some sort of cute scrip that you then exchange at the parks for Disney Dollars or a giftcard. Easy, and you don't have to worry about someone forgetting the "real" money at home.

Aw, that makes me sad. My mom used to hand those out to us for doing chores as well. I'm sad to see them go from the stores.

1) You can order them on-line from WDW.
2) They arrive FEDEX, signature required.
3) Call the Disney number and ask for ticketing.

I made my own as well. Super simple, and I even used actual images of Disney Dollars which are easily available online. They weren't double-sided, but my 4yr olds didn't care.

You could always hand out the home-made version and then have the kids give them to you to exchange for real ones once you get to Disney. Actually that's probably considerably safer than giving little kids "real" money that could easily be lost between now and vacation!

The cost to ship the Disney Dollars is crazy and to me it defeats the purpose. Spending money on Disney Dollars that I could spend at Disney. What I did was create a chart and after my boys completed so many days of chores they receive a $25 Disney giftcard. The cards are free shipping so there is no waste of money there. :)

Yup. Stopped a while ago. You can still get them at the concierge at the hotel and at some locations in the parks. More of a novelty at this point I think. In the article when they announced it, they stated that the cost to produce the bills was 10x the plastic to make a card and most people were using the gift cards anyway. Maybe you could ask someone that is going soon to pick some up for you.

this.

A one dollar DD costs more to make than any denomination of a gift card. Also once made, a DD is real money and has to be handled like real money as soon as its printed. A gift card has no value until its purchased.

From the Disney website (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/parks/ordering-disney-dollars/):

"Call (407) 566-4985 and select option 5. Guests under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to call.

Disney Dollars purchased with a credit card are limited to $50 per day and a $15 shipping charge applies."

So you can get them, but $15 to ship!!!!!

For us the problema is that if we are buying over the phone, we will have to pay with a credit card, and the $ 50 limit would make shipping even crazier since we need about $ 300 :(
