No More Complimentary Bread?

Its funny that this came up here now. I remember in summer 2018 not getting bread at restaurants and thinking that it was odd. We even asked for it at Cinderella Royal Table and were told they didn't have any! We walked away from that trip thinking that they had cheapened the food up quite a bit. Smaller portions, no bread etc. Oh and I also remember the Micky head butter as well as the little WDW symbol ones they used to have at EPCOT. Ah the good old days. (FWIW my dad still talks about getting a fantastic "affordable" prime rib dinner at the castle back when I was a kid (late 70's). I can vaguely recall that too!)

Have you tried looking it up on google first?

Can I just say I love your sig? I have kids away at college and most of what they text me over the course of a week I want to say "I am not Google" but, let's be real, then maybe they would quit texting!

No, some of the bread at the restaurants (like the Le Cellier Pretzel Bread) are another reason why I go to that specific restaurant. What’s next, we gotta pay for soda refills at restaurants?

I agree! I just made my Le Cellier Ressie for this summer and my kids were saying they can’t wait to have that pretzel bread! It’s part of the meal experience there.

On our honeymoon in '95 CRT (called King Stefan's back then) gave you a whole Mickey figurine out of butter! I remember my husband decapitating it neatly and swiftly!
Sounds so cute! We did CRT a few summers ago and they said they no Longer served the bread basket. We were annoyed since it was a 2 point signature meal And it felt cheap to take that feature away - especially considering it was a 2 point per person meal. It was part of the reason why we haven’t been back since!

This morning (March 7) the news site that first broke the bread service issues had said that Disney is reversing course, they are now checking with the impacted restaurants to see if it is true.

Here is the statement that Disney released, "We are continuing complimentary bread service at all table-service restaurants. At this time, there are no plans to discontinue complimentary bread service at any of our table-service restaurants.”

Was this ever even true or just speculation?
Not sure, I think many of the restaurants that operate on Disney property are not actually owned by Disney, so I think they can do whatever they want.

I believe Disney was trying to pull the bread and thankful for the reversal. At WDW, the bread service is when I take my meds. Easier to remember and helps my stomach.

“The first reports of the discontinued bread service came from Coral Reef, in fact, where Cast Members were informing guests today that the lack of bread was due to it being slowly phased out from restaurants. The General Manager at the restaurant later informed us that all table service restaurants in EPCOT were no longer serving bread with your meal as of Sunday, which was their last day offering it.”

At first, we believed it had to be tied to a shortage of some kind, until Cast Members at Mama Melrose’s (in Disney’s Hollywood Studios) also confirmed that there have been talks amongst management to pull complimentary bread service from select restaurants.”

Since folks at Coral Reef for example got no bread and were specifically told there is no bread because it is being phased out

I think it was true.and the plan changed.

Won't impact us that much. We tend to eat too much bread anyways. Still one of the things we loved about Kona was the bread with the macadamia nut butter. The pretzel bread at Le Cellier was also a favourite but we don't eat there since it became signature.

With all the price increases and reduced service I am just glad we got our 10 visits in back in the days when things were a bit more reasonable.

This was an attempt by Disney that failed. Just like the attempt at raising the 2020 lock off premium with DVC. They will most likely try both again later on.

Around here restaurants that would be comparable to 2 credit restaurants at Disney have been hit or miss if they provide bread gratis. This has been going on for over five years. Even non-chain restaurants have started to employ this practice.

The funniest thing that I read, was that there was an activist shareholder of Olive Garden that made a point that they should reduce the number of bread sticks from number of guests + 1 to just number of guests only. Mind you I can't imagine this activist shareholder ever have worked/managed etc a restaurant or restaurant company.

I like to stick my complimentary bread through my refillable mug handle so it stays off the table. This is the second time they've tried to take this away from me! :confused3

I read an article a few minutes ago that said WDW is no longer offering complimentary bread at table service restaurants?! Seriously?

I looked for other sources and couldn’t find anything. Can anyone confirm this?

If this is true it has to be one of the more pathetic things Disney has done recently!
Had it at Olivias for dinner, but nowhere else.
