No Lids

Not any more gross than a kid putting a cup that had a lid but had just picked his nose and then pushed the button to fill the cup. Germs don't stay in one spot. That whole machine is covered in germs. Specially since people will sneeze and cough all over it all day everyday.

Yes, my brain knows this. Guess you've never met a germaphobe before though. Those of us with OCD/germaphobia do not always think "rationally". Anything I can do to prevent any type of cross contamination helps me.

I'm absolutely amazed that people seem to think that Disney's some kind of super clean, sterile, germ-free environment. Think of the sheer number of people that touch handrails, doorknobs, decorations, merchandise, show seats, ride cars, walls, restraints, benches, table tops, pushing/pulling chairs in... I've watched adults sneeze into their hands and then touch surfaces, including buffet spoons and drink dispensers. Not to mention those who change their kid's diapers without thoroughly washing their hands and then go on rides or go eat without stopping to wash their hands, or people who don't wash their hands after they've used the bathroom, or the ones who just quickly rub their hands together beneath the faucet. I had a lady tell me once that it's the friction that really kills germs, not soap. She rubbed her hands together and left. (Ick!)

That doesn't even cover what's airborne around us.

Check the post below yours.

That would require bringing in sealed drinks and food that you have prepared yourself. You can't prevent cross contamination at all in a theme park. Everything you touch has been contaminated.

There is no use trying to explain OCD/germaphobia to you, as you clearly do not understand it. Luckily, I can do what makes ME happy and you can do what makes YOU happy. :-)

Last trip I started putting leftover fizzy drinks from lunch into my resort mug- maybe I'll just pour it in there to begin with.

I’m by no means a germophobe but that always amazes me as well. I know the CM’s do their best but I’ve seen plenty of dirty tables/ chairs and spills. It’s not a sterile bubble (nor would I expect it to be). I couldn’t believe how many people left the restroom without washing their hands while we were there last week.

Just a question, but what did you do in Animal Kingdom and isn't that an option in other parks?

Something to keep in mind as well is that people who are against this aren't necessarily against it in daily life. This is a vacation to a theme park. People might need more conveniences on vacation than they use at home on a daily basis.

That sounds like us. We can have a 100 count box of straws at home last a few years. That includes with visits from grandkids. We never go out for coffee like starbucks, that saves a bunch of cups. We rarely go out to eat like at Burger King, so no wrappers, little packs of sauce, straws, etc. But on vacation I would use all those things.

I used a straw.
Animal Kingdom never had plastic straws or lids. In the example of people putting the cups to their mouths and the using the machines, that has always happened at Animal Kingdom.

Also you are still able use a straw at any park. You just need to bring your own. They fit into toothbrush holders very nicely.

They do/did have paper straws which are just fine for me. And I will be bringing my own.

How much more things do we have to carry around with us in the heat? I am just completely tired of stuff like this. Will the cost of Soda go down now they don't have to supply lids and straws? The actual cost of soda is very small. They try to justify cost because of cups, lids, and straws so I think they cost of those should be going down if I don't get them. Will it happen? Nope.

This sounds like a first world problem. Disney has every right to drop things that costs them money. They never said they existed for your convenience. You pay for the drink, they chose to supply the straw. Use to be you didn't have to pay for checked bags and seat selection when flying either and now you do. People didn't stop flying and people won't stop going to Disney.

I am happy Disney is taking even these small steps to be more eco-friendly. They already have paper straws, seems lids can't be too far off.

The issue is I shouldn't have to bring straws and/or lids just because Disney decided to go cheap. Have I found a solution that is adequate? I guess. But not ideal by any means. Glad its a non issue for you though.

NopeI have a toddler, it’s a lot of luggage, so I get how inconvenient it is to carry things around and we just bring the bare minimum.

This.

There are very few circumstances where anyone is required to carry anything around. I have a toddler and need to carry around diapers/ wipes. The rest of the “baggage” I bring to the park is my choosing (and even in the case of diapers/ wipes I could buy them in the park if I chose not to bring them in myself). People go into the park bagless all of the time- there’s a whole separate line for anyone wishing to do so. They all manage to not carry anything into the park that doesn’t fit into their pockets.

A lid and a straw are convenience items as is the beverage itself. There are water fountains all over the parks- it may not be the first choice for many, but no one is going to dehydrate if they choose to not buy a soda or bring in their own lids/ straws. It is Disney’s choice to stop supplying them for free, or to accommodate anyone with a circumstance requiring those items (then again, my toddler needs diapers but I don’t expect Disney to hand them to me for free as an alternative to bringing them in myself).
