No cost for preventive care????

Isn't it great that everyone now has all this free care that no one has to pay for!

Whoever figured out how to save us all this money is a genius! Why isn't everything free??? :rotfl:

True. Nothing like a free appendectomy performed by an honest-to-goodness government accountant to make one truly grateful for all this "free" healthcare.

Sadly, freedom sure has taken on a new meaning, hasn't it? You are now free to be a slave to the government from the time you are born until they decide you are too old to receive this fantastic "free" medical care. Only so much to go around, you know, and once you've used up your allotment, well I guess that's that. Time to haul grandma off to the death ward.

My work has offered a preventative care plan for close to 5 years now. If it is preventative then you pay no co-pays or deductibles for it.

Also, each year they give me a fund of $800 ($400 if you are single, $1200 if you have a family of more than two) to pay for non-preventative services. This fund rolls over each year if I don't use it; and if I do use it, they deduct the amount from my deductible. At this point I have not used much of this fund and it has build up enough to cover my entire deductible if anything big happens to me or my daughter.

Amazingly enough, out of the three insurance plan options my work offers, this one costs the least amount in monthly premiums ($100/month compared to $300+/month) and has the smallest deductible($2500 compared to $5000 and $10,000). My guess would be the insurance companies have done the math and people who get preventative work done cost them less in the long run, than those who wait until they have a deadly disease before seeking help.

For all of those getting "free" medical services, you're welcome. Grab some free contraceptives while you're at it. Please be sure to send me and all the other hardworking taxpayers a thank you card.
There is sooooooo much I could say here.....
As a former soldier and wife of an Army Officer with 20+ years, I have NO problem helping our fellow citizens when it comes to health care. And free contraceptives is a good thing I think. If that means paying out more in taxes, I will gladly do it, as will my husband. He pays taxes out of his military pay check each month just like everyone else. Let's put it this way, he has enough taxes taken each month to support you. ;)

First, thank you and your hubby for your service. Second, unless he's an O-9 or O-10, I'm pretty sure you or he can't support me. Lastly, when your hubby's pay is cut because the government can't pay it's bills just remember that you're OK with that.

We live a very comfortable life thank you, even with the 1.2% raises lately. ;) And yes, he does have very close to what a private coming into the military make taken out each month. Talk to any field grade officer, they will tell you. Anyway, the point for me is, I have no problem having more taxes taken out if it means EVERYONE has equal access to basic medical care/emergency care. As for the government not being able to pay it's bills, well we know who we can thank for that and it's not the current administration. We have been very fortunate to not have felt the effects of the recession. What saddens me is cases like my friend from high school who lost his job (factory up north), health care insurance and house. He has MS which requires medical care, but he doesn't get it as he should because his state was hit so hard. Shouldn't be that way.

Ok, I have to stop, this has gotten way out in left field. lol I really am not a confrontational person. :wave2:

Couldn't agree more. I would LOVE the system in Europe (lived there and used the health care system) - everyone is treated no matter if they can pay or not and France has the best health care in the world...

So you want socialized medicine!?! You do know they have death panels, right?? So if someone has an incourable disease they are done, or if grandma doesnt meet the age requirement they are bye-bye. People need to look at everything not just the free, free, free. :faint:

In my nicest tone : If you like Europes healthcare better, then by all means move back to Europe. We dont want a Europe, We want our USA back!

I think a single payer system is the most affordable way to go - that way, instead of millions of dollars going to a CEO in bonuses, the $$$ could be used for patient care. And as far as death panels? What do you call it when people aren't allowed to buy insurance because of a preexisting condition? Or when a bean counter denies treatment? Or someone has reached their lifetime benefit so now is cut off? Isn't that the same as a death panel? Or doesn't that count since its a business decision to ensure that the stockholders are happy?

Nothing is ever free. We all have to pay for it in some form or fashion. Money isn't the worth of all the benefits we enjoy as citizens of this awesome nation. Our Soldiers fight for our freedoms which isn't free. We enjoy using our road system which isn't free. We have disaster relief available when needed and it isn't free. Someone/everyone is paying their part of that. Some more than others for sure!!!

Being military as a past post stated we not 'pay' money for our care, surgeries, medicine, etc, but we DO pay dearly for that!! My husband doesn't punch a clock for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. He doesn't get scheduled lunch breaks. He has to maintain his physical health and pass his physical fitness test every 6 months in order to stay in the military. He has been gone from home a total of 44 months out of 10 years he's been in. He's had to sleep on the ground and other various places in lieu of his warm bed at home. So, when people (and I mostly mean those I know personally), balk about our so-called FREE healthcare, I am quick to remind them their husbands don't do the same work as mine.

Am I complaining about this? NO, because it's what we do. We serve our country out of honor and committment. We chose this and this is what we like.

I agree with the OP in that some folks who are getting 'free' care at the cost of everyone else is irritating. Many people (and again, some of my own family/friends) are abusers of the system. They drive their nice cars, live in decent homes, eat steak, have nice jewelry....but, I can lay my head down at night knowing I worked for every bit I have earned and can go my grave with that!!

No free rides with me!!:moped:

We currently do have have to pay for preventative visits, but we're in Mass and already have heathcare reform so this may be state wide already for us.

Oh good grief-there is no such thing as death panels. Stop making things up. I am thrilled to have AHC, it is the law of the land and is wonderful!

I would love socialized medicine such as Canada enjoyes. The USA is a first world country with the healthcare of a 3rd world country.

The thing is, people can purchase additional insurance if they wish in countries who have socialized medicine. There is much more to it then that. Maybe research it? :confused3

Unfortunately, ignorance is bliss! :rolleyes2

I thought this thread was not suppose be political. :cool1:

I think fully covered preventative care is a great idea.

Those of you so worried about my free care costing you money- I will get your thank you card in the mail as soon as I receive your check for my cobra premiums. I'm sure it must have slipped your mind, but we've been paying for insurance all year and haven't seen that yet?:confused3

I can't figure out why some of you are acting like your tax dollars pay premiums to insurance companies.

No need for name calling, this is the Disboard..... I never said our system was without fault. I think socialized medicine is not the way our founding fathers pictured this country. But since your from Canada you would not know about that..... This country cant afford it, simple as that. Who pays for it? the tax payer!! Again we cant afford it!!! People are losing jobs (because again businesses cant afford to keep people on) and premiums are going up.

I dont think its the "free" preventative care that irks people, bc you in the long run pay for that just like myself. I think the problem is the "free"healthcare people have an issue with. Because its not free, someone has to pay for it. Our country is trillions of dollars in debt and we cant afford it. Thats all!
