NJ & Sandy

My sister lives in Union Beach. Her house is gone!. It was so devastating to see. I have home in BHW(right before LBI). My first floor totally destroyed. Water came up into the home 3 feet. This home was originally owned by DH grandparents and we inherited it. My DH passed 3 yrs ago and this was to be my retirement home. I have no FLood insurance which means no help from homeowners policy. Now you might ask why did I not get flood insurance. Well the water has never ever gotten past the yard since the home was built and because it was extremely costly. I have one salary supporting 2 kids and a grandchild. I was denied FEMA and SBA loan because it was not my primary home.

Oh and may I add I have breast cancer. Somehow I don't see how the same people over and over get services such as housing, money, free phones etc. that they clearly don't need because they are capable of working while I work every day(even through my chemo), pay taxes and when I ask for a bone to be thrown my way, I get denied. I cannot believe I was even denied a loan:furious:

btw My sisters home on the same street that the video was taken. She is with me until insurance can figure out where she will go

I am so sorry Minijeanie for you and your sister. I will say a prayer for you all.

Thank you Alabama Power for helping get us back on the grid.

And shout out to Michigan, Ohio,NC and all who helped out. National Guard was fantastic as always. These guys need hot meals as well.
Gonna go to Union Beach and donate food as well as personal items.

Americans are just the best!!!

I hate to ask and hope it is really not off topic, but does anyone know about Fire Island? I noticed the boards have been quiet today and just remembering there is another storm headed that way. Please stay safe! Praying for everyone.

Fire Island is on Long Island, NY.

Do you know if it was hit hard? I am trying to find any info for a friend who's mom is living there. If not it is ok.

I'm afraid it was hit pretty badly. They were under a mandatory evacuation so if she stayed, she may still be out of power.

Search for FireIsland.com on facebook. You may be able to find a way to get in contact with people.

Good luck today Jim and all the other LBI residents.

My BIL's mother's house is in Holgate so they can't go. She can't anyway--she is very sick and dying right now. :worried:

Sorry to hear about BIL's mother.

They started letting people onto LBI at 7am. We went out around 6am for coffee and rode toward the checkpoint area . There were already dozens of cars waiting. Later on I heard the line was backed up 5 or 6 miles, past the Garden State Parkway. In addition, there were lines in both directions on the Parkway waiting to exit at Exit 63. I heard they eventually stopped checking for ID because the lines were just so long.

The entry town to LBI, Ship Bottom, looked relatively OK. Streets were clean, not any significant damage. Going south into Brant Beach, the Boulevard was clear, but there was still piles of sand down some of the side streets. We passed about a half dozen homes that look beyond repair. When we reached all those little communities (Beach Haven Crest, BH Gardens, BH Terrace, The Dunes, etc.) the boulevard narrowed from 4 lanes to 2 in many spots because there there mountains of sand and all kinds of debris piled up. The parking lot of the Acme supermarket had become a giant dumping ground.

Reaching Beach Haven proper, the streets were clear again. My house fared surprising well. It's elevated, so no water got in. A few of the lattice panels covering the pilings were missing or beat up. The yard was covered in all kinds of broken plant matter and miscellaneous other debris. The mailbox and its post were gone. The bottom two Trex steps on the outside stairs were missing. Garage doors got buckled and crunched up. About 2 or 3 inches of muck in the garage. Muck line on outside garage wall about 3 feet high. Outside shed lifted off its foundation and deposited about 15 feet away in a tilted, cockeyed position. But no damage to the interior of the house itself. Had to throw out all the food in the fridge and freezer.

We shoveled the muck out of the garage and hosed it down the best we could. Water was running but no electricity or gas. Not sure if the shed can be salvaged and put back on the foundation. Cleaned up the yard debris as well as possible today. Helped the neighbors a bit. Gathered some clothes, books, and a few other items and then left. Nothing much more we could do.

Driving back we noticed people in lower-lying houses had piles of soaked furniture, mattresses, appliances and other damaged items outside their homes. So comapred to them we fared OK.

Overall, it doesn't look as bad as I had originally feared. Didn't go to the beach to see how it looks. But I heard the pavilions at Pearl Street and 5th Street are gone. The outside of Buckalew's looks OK. There were people working there both inside and out cleaning up.

Not sure how bad Holgate is. It's still off limits. I wonder if those trailers in the trailer park washed away. North Beach was also off limits, but you have to pass through NB to get to Harvey Cedars, Love Ladies, and Barnegat Light.

Thank you Alabama Power for helping get us back on the grid.

Yes, thanks Alabama Power. They were in the area I evacuated to for several days and got the power back on quickly. They seem to have left the area by Saturday since virtually everyone here in Manahawkin now has electricity. Glad they're going to places that still need them.

When leaving LBI, I noticed a dozen or more trucks from Delmarva Power at a staging area at the entrance to the island. Hopefully the rest of LBI will be restored soon. But natural gas is going to take a while, maybe a long while.

There's talk of allowing some residents to return permanently by the weekend, depending on how this expected nor'easter affects things.

It's so cold in here right now.

Jim

Glad to hear that things were not too bad, Jim. DH took my parents down today so they could assess the damage to their home. They live in an older home that is not on pilings, and so were somewhat less fortunate. While the structure is sound, all of their furnishings from the first floor are now out in the yard. What my DH couldn't get out of the house today, my BIL, along w/ a couple of the grandkids are hoping to get out this weekend, especially the rugs.

The suppose the next move will be to get the insurance adjusters in there so that they can start to make arrangements to have the interior rebuilt.

They did take a couple of pictures of the beach at 17th St. in North Beach Haven. There were bulldozers pushing sand around, probably around 19th or 20th St.

We still feel so fortunate. My parents are safe. The structure is sound. It will take some time, but they will be made whole again. Many others will not be so lucky.

Hope everyone is well and getting the help they need.

I heard from my cousin Donna in Toms River today (1st time since the storm) and they still have no power but considering the devastation around them they were very blessed. She said the aid centers have really been utilized and been supplying lots of coats, hats for the cold weather.
Some of there friends have lost everything.

Tonight she will tell me what they need next in the centers and we hope to meet them as close as we can get without a local i.d. this weekend.

Praying that the storm tomorrow doesn't cause more havoc:sad1:

Monmouth county here.

We just got power 2 hours ago. The neighborhood got it last Wed but we lost the line to the house so we had to wait for a hook up.

My parents and sister have houses in Moonachie. MY parents have lived there for 57 years and they never had water like this before. My sister's first floor was under water. The water knocked over the freezer in the garage and the frig in the kitchen. We spent the weekend with a couple of my sisters and grandkids to clean out my parent's basement and my sister's first floor.

Hope everyone else made it out okay. I haven't had a chance to read past the last two pages.

Yeah for power!!!!! I just listened to the news and possibly Nor Easter dowgraded a bit. Here in central NJ there has been many times people have gotten power only to loose it again for a few hours or overnight.

Sorry about family's homes. This is all so surreal

I hope everyone has a fast recovery and stays safe!:thumbsup2

Just got a call from my son's preschool teacher (public school). She was calling all her student's homes to make sure everyone was ok. Warms my heart.
Donna
