NJ & Sandy

So much for dodging a bullet. We just got into our condo in Margate and had water damage. Water came up from the crawlspace into our unit on the ground floor. Everything is going to have to go. Hope I don't lose the cabinets. And the smell is just God awful! We may have to wait a week to get someone in to take up the rugs and dry out.

Have people in general always been so stupid about livingthisclose to water or is it a 19th century on kind of thing? You would think the poorest people would be living closet to the water because the richer people would want to be safer...I guess there's just no fathoming the Darwin effect.

I've lived in Jersey all my life and one thing I was always taught was "sandbars, they move".

As far as anyone in LBI, they have the national guard out there since Sunday, I don't know if there is any communication out available. I haven't heard/seen anything about deaths on the island, but news is still coming out. Even around here telephone service is sketchy, both landline and cellular.

Are you saying that poor people should have the mentality that their lives have little value because of their financial status?

Other than what I just said, I honestly don't know how to respond to this post. :confused3

A week is too long. Mold will set in, and they will have to be thrown out. To dry it out, it has to be done in a few days, otherwise it has to be tossed. So sorry for your losses.

If your drywall is wet, you need to cut 12 inches above the wet also and replace.

Just an FYI for residents of LBI.

Re-entry info is available on the township's website.

Specifics can be found at http://www.longbeachtownship.com/images/RE-ENTRY_REV1.pdf

No re-entry will be allowed to North Beach and Holgate due to continuing unsafe conditions.

Thanks for posting.

Although this link is for Long Beach Township, residents of the other LBI municipalities, Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars, Surf City, Ship Bottom, and Beach Haven will also be allowed to return tomorrow Monday, November 5, starting at 7am. No entry after 12 noon. Must depart by 3pm. Electricity is spotty, no natural gas, running water if available deemed unsafe to drink.

Resident documentation required.

I'm anxious to return and check on things. I didn't think it would be possible until later this week.

My neighbors have a house in Harvey Cedars on 86th. They are eager to get down there and see how it is.

My mom's friend has a house in Love Ladies and they saw their house on the new still standing but haven't gotten to see it in person yet.

Jim I hope all is well with yours!

Good luck today Jim and all the other LBI residents.

My BIL's mother's house is in Holgate so they can't go. She can't anyway--she is very sick and dying right now. :worried:

Thinking of everyone going back today to see your homes :grouphug:

LBIJim and all LBI residents I'm praying for you that your property is in good condition!

Also, if anyone knows a family that would like to be adopted by our neighborhood please let me know. We're looking into adopting a family or two that were affected by Sandy to help them with clean up, food, clothing, etc. We are a fantastic neighborhood in Hillsborough, NJ.

I don't think this is what the poster meant.

More like why do those with money, who have options on where to live because they have money Choose to live right next to the water where they will easily flood. You would think that those with options would choose to live in safer areas.

This unfortunately would have the affect of poorer areas ending up closer to water because if those with money started buying all the higher ground not next to water those without money/as many options would be stuck with what was left.

I have to say that I do agree with the "Why would anyone with options want to live in an area so likely to flood" part.

Donna,
Do you know what town this is? Some of the buildings look familiar from our shore trips but I can't place them.

It looks to be Union Beach - one of the houses (the one partially on the street) is owned by the aunt of a school friend of my DD14 - and yes, that was her one & only home!

We are doing two families, friends of friend on Facebook.

There is a heartbreaking story about a great guy that goes to my breakfast place. I don't know anything about his family. He was just a guy helping out a neighbor and got killed in the process. Tragic.

Also this is going around facebook registries set up by communities. Here is one for staten island

I know Bridgewater is looking for volunteer groups to help with clean up. I just recieveed this email..if you are interested pm me and I can send you the contact info

To All Clean Communities Project Coordinators Past and Present:

Thank you for your assistance with the Bridgewater Township Clean Communities Program. The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has left a high volume of brush and natural storm debris throughout the Township. This material must now be transported to designated staging locations in the Township as a priority in order to keep roadways and storm drainage areas clear. The volunteer assistance of your group or organization would be most appreciated in this effort. Volunteer activities would include assistance at the designated staging areas to be located at certain Township Parks and the Municipal Yard Waste Facility with the unloading of brush. Work gloves will be provided for these purposes.

Please note that any services would be strictly volunteer. Clean Communities Grant Funds may not be utilized to compensate groups for this assistance. The Township would be able to certify community service hours for any assistance.

My sister lives in Union Beach. Her house is gone!. It was so devastating to see. I have home in BHW(right before LBI). My first floor totally destroyed. Water came up into the home 3 feet. This home was originally owned by DH grandparents and we inherited it. My DH passed 3 yrs ago and this was to be my retirement home. I have no FLood insurance which means no help from homeowners policy. Now you might ask why did I not get flood insurance. Well the water has never ever gotten past the yard since the home was built and because it was extremely costly. I have one salary supporting 2 kids and a grandchild. I was denied FEMA and SBA loan because it was not my primary home.

Oh and may I add I have breast cancer. Somehow I don't see how the same people over and over get services such as housing, money, free phones etc. that they clearly don't need because they are capable of working while I work every day(even through my chemo), pay taxes and when I ask for a bone to be thrown my way, I get denied. I cannot believe I was even denied a loan:furious:

btw My sisters home on the same street that the video was taken. She is with me until insurance can figure out where she will go
