On Saturday a student from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Burlington County, NJ died of H1N1. Apparently he was in school and showing no symptoms on Friday, then died on Saturday:

I have not been getting really worried over the new flu, but this hits a bit close to home. Anyone else out there from around here? How are you handling this? Have the kids in your district been offered the H1N1 vaccine yet?

Central jersey here. we have had a dozen cases in town already and worse problem is the local pharmacies have run out of Tamiflu with no restock in site due to a manufacturing problem!!! I am getting concerned now.

Until now, Jersey's been one of the lightest hit areas...I know there are a lot of kids out at our school, and I assume many have H1N1, or at least a 'flu-like-illness.' The Tamiflu shortage makes it a bit scarier, as DS5 has asthma and won't stop biting his nails!!! Any vaccine in Central Jersey yet?

Was it actually confirmed by a lab test that he had H1N1?

Middlesex County here. We just got permission forms sent home yesterday for the H1N1 shot or mist to be given at school. They said they will will start the week of Nov 16th.

Hunterdon here- My son was sent home yesterday from High school- fever. (didn't have it in the AM)
This morning he woke up no fever- but I'm keeping him home to see if he is fever free all day(they have to be 24 hours after having one now.

His school has 20% of the students out ill. Rumor is at 30% it closes for a scrub down.

That's very scary though that he seemed find one day and then dead the next? That poor family.

Oh and our peditrician isn't pushing Tamiflu. They are saying they have seen more complications with that? So they didn't want to see us unless he has trouble breathing.

I am in Middlesex County also..I haven't heard anything from our school yet...do you know if the county is handling it, or your town?

I'm petrified of the congestion my daughter currently has; she hasn't been tested, the doctor said there was nothing more they could do for her that I wasn't already doing, so I don't know if this is seasonal or H1N1... I was so glad that her fever broke, but now this congestion, the sound of her cough is KILLING me. :sad1:

Poor kid, I'm so sorry to hear that this happened. :( I wonder what complications from H1N1 could have killed him so quickly?!

Well, did you bother to read the article the OP linked? It SAID it was confirmed by tests.

Do you think they are lying or something? :confused3

I read the article. It was very short. I don't think anyone suggested they were "lying or something", but the news media often rushes a story without having all the facts. There may be more information forthcoming. It does not sound like most of the H1N1 deaths I have heard about, where the victims developed pneumonia and were in the hospital very ill before they died.

quite a few of the deaths have been after VERY rapid decline. I will try to dig out the article I'd found before, where something like only 30% of those who DIED had secondary infections (pneumonia). There was something about a kind of lesion this particular flu sometimes causes in the lungs, that won't show on xray. This flu seems to LIKE the lower respiratory tract, whereas most other flus stay in the upper tract.

In our family, cough lasts several WEEKS following this flu. DS had it 3 1/2 wks ago and just stopped coughing. DH is the only 1 who stopped coughing quicker -- almost 2 weeks of coughing for him.

So you saw this part:

"State health officials say tests have confirmed that a 17-year-old Burlington County boy has died due to complications from swine flu."

:confused3

The other poster was questioning if a test was done to confirm he had H1N1...I was just pointing out that the article stated that tests were done. So unlesss that is a lie, tests were done.

Scary stuff.

Yesterday there were over 50 kids absent from DDs' school of around 300 students. There are rumors that kids have H1N1, but no official confirmation.

Our school has vaccination clinics scheduled, but the first one was cancelled. I hope they get the vaccine soon. I have noticed that there are now some public clinics scheduled around the state, but not until November, and none close to me. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my kids will be able to get the vaccine before they get sick.

The article said COMPLICATIONS from the Swine Flu, most of the cases of those that have died from it...there were other things going on in their systems BESIDES having the flu.

I am not saying this isn't serious but the "regular" flu has thousands of people die from it every year. What makes this so different. The Media is talking about it? Sorry not getting this vaccination. I think its a bit too much hoopla about it and its almost like a diversion, we should be paying attention this instead of that.

I feel for you, and understand. We had a student die from it also in our local HS, she was a freshman and it was stated that she also had unknown underlying issues. It all happened very fast for her I believe, and she was diagnosed with the flu . Waht is scariest for m is the fact that general medical exams ( bakc to school etc) do not seem to reveal what can be a dangerous underlying condition...or why are so many unknown? Yet H1N1 has the ability to "find" these issues or, well, you know what I mean...they are underlying until the flu hits, then suddently they are revealed. Not in ALL cases, many DO know any issues they have, but there have been so many reports of those who had no idea.

We also had a local man age 47 die from it as well, again, "underlying unknown health issues". Another HS north of us about 15 miles was closed last week as over 900 students were out. The lines at the county for the vaccine were 5-6hours long yesterday, and that is only for those who qualify.

My sister in law just called to tell me that her son and daughter's high school had over 100 kids sent home with "flu-like symptoms" yesterday! :scared1: May not sound like a lot for some of you in the big cities, but this is over a quarter of the school, total.

On the other hand, my daughter is the ONLY ONE in her school who has had symptoms at all similar to the swine flu. :confused3 Not the last, though, I'm thinking.

That poor young man and his family.

Morris County here..the school district is offering it to student next month in my town.

CDC said last week NJ was one of four states with no swine activity. I guess that has changed. So tragic for this young man and his family.
