I recall a couple of threads a while back regarding the wireless infared remote for Nikon cameras. One discussion began about fireworks photography and turned into a discussion as to whether the remote could be used in bulb mode. It turned out that it could (set camera to bulb, press button on remote to release shutter, press button on remote again to close shutter). Toward the end of that thread some DISers expressed that they would be buying an IR remote for their cameras. The official Nikon remote is quite affordable (a little under $20 on Amazon), but there are 3rd party ones available on ebay and other places (again, Amazon) for even less (under $10). There's nothing particularly special or complicated about IR remotes, so there's no reason to believe that the 3rd party ones wouldn't work just as well as the official one from Nikon.
