News Round Up 2020

Canada in general is taking a much slower and more conservative approach to opening things up. Personally, I'm okay with that.

The risk the US is taking with their aggressive approach is obvious - a worse result than the initial outbreak. A second round of closures will likely be worse for the economy than the first.

Virgin Atlantic has today announced that it will be closing its operations at London Gatwick Airport, and will only fly from London Heathrow and Manchester. Gatwick has long been the main airport for scheduled air travel to Orlando International from the United Kingdom, typically offering three direct flights to Orlando per day.
Note that this is VA saying this. I believe there are lots of other choices for flying to the UK from the USA where they land at LHR instead of LGW. I know when we flew to the UK in October 2019 we did Delta to LHR.

Yeah the article talked about VA but also British airways indicating they may so similar - so I guess more impactful to the UK airlines and at a minimum people will have to seek out alternatives

If I were Disney, and I am not, I would wait to see how things worked in Shanghai before announcing a reopening date for WDW.

I am assuming that we will hear a plan on the earnings call today, but that it will be laid out in milestones and not dates.

We can't really compare them though. I follow an expat that teaches in Shanghai on twitter and insta. She's been very open about all of it. She flew back to the US the end of Jan as planned due to their holidays there. She finally went home in mid march and at that point everyone was taken to a testing center from the airport where they got tested and had to wait. She thrn had to quarantine for 2 weeks and was able to do it at home but not all were. This included a special lock on her door to monitor and was to only be opened when the building was notified. She had disenfectent tabs that had to be used in her trash before it was put outside her door. She had temp checks daily, 2 or 3. And this was with being negative.

She also said that all of Shanghai locked down during chinese ny when a lot of stuff was already closed. They were proactive and were able to keep things out. She still has daily temp checks when leaving/entering her apt complex and at the school she teaches at. The kids are back but have the option to continue at home. She doesn't knkw the number of cases but figures it has to be gone or they wouldn't be back at school since they've been elearning since feb and it's all the same as if they were in school.

She's lived there 4 years so I feel like she knows enough how things go over there. They do have to wear masks and do have the mandatory health app. But restaurants are open and stuff is going back to normal. But it also sounds like they did a better job of containing and preventing. They still have a limit on who can enter and even as a resident I don't think she'd be allowed back now with the way they have things.

It wouldn't surprise me if they limit shanghai dl by where you live etc. Those health apps will be scanned I'm sure as they seem to be most anywhere you go or at least it's shown. The way stuff has been handled over there is so different from herr for obvious reasons and is why I dont think shanghai but hong kong or tokyo are the more likely examples of timeline for here.

Welp, what can I say, I'm an optimist.

For anyone who missed the call and doesn't want to read the 22 page thread I thought a quick TL: DR on parks only might be useful:
  • Shanghai reopening May 11
    • Masks required for all
    • "much" less than 30% of capacity to start, scaling up over time. Current gov't cap is 30%.
    • Using dated tickets that have to be booked in advance
    • US park openings may use different procedures
  • No timeline for US parks
  • No guideposts for US parks in terms of health statistics or government stages
  • Parks need to be able to make a "positive contribution at the net contribution line"* to reopen
  • Chapek confirmed thinking that parks will likely reopen below capacity with limited attractions
  • For new attractions and buildings in the parks: "we still continue to have big plans. Those good ideas before COVID are going to be really good ideas after...there are certain trimmings that we’re doing here and there...we’re just going to go ahead and take a slightly finer-tooth comb, if you will, through those expenditures but essentially plan on investing behind those businesses like we always have. "
    • Confirmed that essentially all construction projects will remain suspended while the parks are closed
*this means they need to lose less money being open than they do closed, but Chapek specifically notes that they're not trying to turn a profit with the parks at this time.

I wonder how they are going to handle the omni mover system. I can see loading every third doom buggy at Haunted Mansion, but wipeing it down between the unload and the loading platform without stoping the ride is going to take a pit crew of cast members

Unless they can come up with a system of spraying the used buggies , and if seating every other or every third buggy the sprayed car would have ample time to dry in between seatings. I could see them doing that on omnimover type rides, where the cars never stop.

Did anyone see the virtual All Rise episode?

I thought given the circumstances it was a decent enough episode and at least some way of ending the season out without it being a big cliffhanger.

We're a bit behind in our 'All Rise' watching but will look out for this one. Glad they found a way to end the season. Fall will be really different without new shows being produced now and possibly over the summer.
