News Round Up 2020

I don't think they will be hit longer than 9/11. Travel after 9/11 was terrible for years. I do think that people will be coming back, maybe not in droves, but large numbers, as soon as stuff seems to calm down. Money numbers-wise, I don't know if the impact will be worse than 9/11. I don't think so, due to the length of time that 9/11 affected stuff. Right now there are a lot more things that are getting hit; however, all public things, including movies, declined drastically for a while after 9/11.
I think this is right. The next 2 quarters will be catastrophic. But attendance after that will include a lot of pent up demand.

I also think they will really minimize what they are doing with WDW's 50th celebration now too. I am sure they are glad they really hadn't announced much about it yet.

I'm hopeful that's the case.

It makes it difficult to compare everything because 9/11 was terrorism concern and fear driving loss in multiple sectors, The Recession was financially related driving loss in multiple sectors, but this is really both..we have concern and fear regarding a virus we don't have a way to protect against and one that we are continually learning about it and we have financially related with the cruise, overall travel industry and most def. all these businesses (especially restaurants and the like plus smaller businesses) being impacted and everyday people being impacted by their works, by the schools (creating a mass need for childcare for one), for food for some of these kids, etc

I think this one is hard to compare too because of all the quarantines, bans on X amount of people in one area, etc. We never had that with either 9/11 or The Recession. It's not about a choice to some, even if they could afford it, if their city, county or state is shutting down restaurants and means of travel, but that can compound the issue for vunerable places who don't have an infinite amount of time to wait for these quarantines and bans to be let up.

Good point. Sometimes it's better to not know ya know. I do think we know they'll scale back maybe quite heavily but leaves me the opportunity to still be excited about what they announce :)

This is what I basically was trying to say. The short term for Disney is going to be much harder than the previous two instances, but it won’t last as long.

My expectation as of right now is things move as planned. If anything I expect slowdowns. Disney isn’t going to throw more money at projects when no money is coming in.
I'd expect them to work on little things that won't cost much in materials, but they are paying their maintenance crews anyways, might as well get something productive out of them.

I don't see them accelerating anything that will result in major material or vendor costs, though.

I did see one blogger (not sure if it is one we trust) post that he had sources saying Disney will double their construction efforts during the shut down ... I mean, maybe this just means things that are in progress (Tron, Guardians, etc.) get some extra effort and accelerated a bit but I would think other larger projects get pushed back. Even like Spaceship Earth, maybe that gets delayed, and things like Mary Poppins get cancelled

If they could do it, as in it's feasible and the risk of exposure for the workers, is minimal, it would be the best time to do some of this stuff. No guests in the parks, no working around park hours and fireworks and parades, etc.

It woud be so lovely too if some of these rides that are problem child rides could get some TLC now when they don't have to worry about guest impacts and FP issues for the rides that have FP.

Hopefully Spaceship Earth doesn't get too delayed or delayed at all moreso because it's such a large projected expected to take so long but I guess because it wasn't started yet it would be easier to push that off. And maybe it would soften the blow to me if I knew other projects and other rides that have been having issues lately or are known for issues could get some love :)

I saw that, too. However, it seems unlikely just given the state of things especially with so much lost revenue.

IL has just shut down all dine in restaurants at least until the end of the month.
From what my husband just read it's not the the restaurant is shut down but rather no patrons can be inside. So some of the restaurants will be fine to go to delivery based but some may not be able to operate in such a way.

Again, if I ran TWDC, I’d double down because my next two quarters are shot anyway, so may as well pile on, and because I could do everything a lot cheaper now so it’s better in the long run. Iger seems to think that way. No idea if Chapek does.

My understanding around Tron specifically is that it’s already ahead of schedule, and it can’t open ahead of schedule because of Shanghai’s exclusivity window, so no reason to speed that up.
