News Round Up 2020

Which I think is *really* generous given the circumstances.
I agree. I'm really surprised they're paying them. College students around the country were told they had to get out and not given more than 2-3 days to vacate.

I get paying employees that will be continuing on with the company after this. They need to do that to retain them but paying people no longer employed by the company is really generous.

The fact that we have reports of crying cast members walking out of parks tells me they mishandled this.

No matter how they handled this, these kids were going to cry. It was a dream of theirs to be there, and now it has been cut short and/or they will never have the opportunity for this again. It is *very* sad, and I have so much empathy for them. But Disney has to make decisions right now for the health of the company...for other kids to be able to have those same experiences in the future. There’s no two ways about this, we are living in a “sucky” part of history. This will be written about in our grandchildren’s history textbooks. But, I want my grandkids to be able to actually experience Disney. So, they are doing what they must to protect that.

And both things can be true for sure .... It is really sad, I really feel for the kids, but I also understand Disney's side of it and paying them through the end of the month is more than lots of companies are doing

We are in the middle of a ton of crappy situations and this is just one of them

Expect cuts in many areas. Several live entertainment acts are being told their contracts are done simply because disney can’t afford to pay them without them playing and no money coming in. Disney is also expecting this closure to be longer than the end of March.

I don't necessarily agree that means they mishandled it. I think it means the cast members were very disappointed and were emotional, crying is a natural response for some people.

Let’s just say finding out you are done during your shift isn’t the best way to communicate it....

It’s the way it was done. From what I’ve seen the decision was just handed down today after they were told they were not getting terminated.

I think if they had announced it along with the park closing and publicly offer them assistance moving out it would have played out better.
A lot of tough decisions are being made on the fly. I’m sure part of decision dealt with the realization if they kept these kids there longer they might not be able get home if further travel restrictions were put in place. Kids stuck at Disney would be a PR nightmare. Parents would screaming about how Disney failed them.

Not that I didn't expect this but I also think when Disney says "we can't afford to pay them without them playing"...come on Disney you aren't a small business barely struggling to make ends meet, we know you have profits from the parks, etc.

I don't think it's that they can't afford to pay them now, but rather they don't want to take the hit to their overall profits when they don't have to. They can trim any fat realistically now and that be a smart business decisions but that doesn't equate to actually not being able to afford to pay them as in they really can afford to as in they'll go into the red and shut down if they do pay them.

Thank you. This is an unprecedented situation. There's no rule book for this. They are trying to get the kids out.

LSU told students they had to clear out immediately. There were tears. This is a very emotional time right now.

Yes but disney is taking significant hits from this. They are losing millions per day right now. They do have funds to keep the a float of course but at the same time this is going to be a bad time. I’m expecting any major project not underway to be delayed or canned altogether. Disney is prepping for a long closure.

When it's all said and done there will be billions lost. Just like the NBA, they have put the busiest season aside for safety and to support the medical staff who cannot afford to be overwhelmed.

They will recover and I will be happy to go and keep throwing money at them when they are up and running.

I totally get the other stuff and fully expected that. It's the "we can't afford line" that I'm responding to. Simply saying "we have to terminate your contract because we will be closed and unable to have you come into work" is much more along the lines of what's going on.

I should say that’s my paraphrase. It’s not direct from disney. This is all a game of telephone.

Disney did right on a lot of things but what they did to the college program kids wasn’t right. Totally disgusting

Why? If Disney is fairly confident they won’t be reopening for the next month or so and don’t know if or when it will be, it makes sense to send them home rather than stringing them along. Just because CMs are being paid for the next 2 weeks doesn’t meant it’s going to happen past that.

Ok, Candy Crush just told me to wash my hands and stay safe in a pop up when I opened the game.

Atm told me to wash or sanitize my hands after I'd used it last night while waiting for my card and receipt to pop out. Surprised me but reminded me why I like my credit union. Wish they'd keep it after all this.

Yes, we actually have already subscribed. I just mentioned this because it seems like a new offer and to a different audience.

It's not a new offer they just extended it. I go an email from delta in dec or jan with the 14 day offer which is better than the reg 7 day but I think it expired this month, they extended it into april. Ans now that there's no sports I may finally do the trial but I've got books to read first 😊
