News Round Up 2016

I think a viable option here is to keep the beaches but totally line the shoreline/water where they are at with water compatible shrubbery so that there is a natural barrier.

I'm not against them doing something, but I would not go with this option. Alligators have been seen up on the beach during the day (there's a photo of one on the 7 Seas Lagoon beach at the bottom of this story) ..shrubbery like described would give them a place to hide and be much more likely to go unseen. I understand alligator attacks are rare in general, and that night is more dangerous as they are nocturnal, but I don't believe the option above adds safety.

It would create a barrier (space). A gator is unlikely to go through vegetation, and then up on shore to grab someone. They tend to stay at the edge or in water when hunting. This would solve.

Eliminating the gators or filling in the lakes is not possible. So we are either dealing with manmade barriers or natural ones. I'd go with the natural.

I would prefer natural as well, but in the picture in the article I posted, the gator is hanging out in vegetation at the edge of the beach. Perhaps the type of vegetation would make a difference. Personally, I don't think there's much Disney can do either way aside from communicating the danger. This is their natural habitat. Nothing is going to keep gators away completely.

ETA: To clarify further - I would be concerned that shrubbery would give a different false sense of security with regards to gators. Keeping 100% of gators away 100% of the time is unrealistic, IMO, but I think a lot of people would feel like that natural barrier makes it 100% safe even if it doesn't.

The only 100% safe is to create manmade physical barriers and block
people from getting within 10 feet of the shore. There's a very large chance that is where this is going. More fences. More concrete.

What I'm saying is that I don't even think that is 100% safe. There is no possible way to wall off all access to water on Disney property. People have reported seeing gators on Tom Sawyer's Island and Splash Mountain. Trying to address it as though there is a way to make it 100% safe is a mistake, IMO. It just isn't possible.

I'm telling you - they'll just get rid of the beaches. It really only hits a few resorts (VGF/Poly/CBR/Beach Club). People don't use them much anyways because they can't go in the water as it is. Change them to a more park-like area where people could picnic if they want. (They could even leave a large sandbox area.)

That's not going to eliminate gators coming up to sunbathe in the park area.

I agree this is probably where they are headed. Make a sandy area with beach chairs and a splash / sprinkler zone then make the areas next to the lakes inaccessible with rose bushes or something. Not 100 % secure from gators but a little better for both the gator issue and the amoeba issue with the water. Then they can get back to the original plan of training the brain eating amoeba to force people to buy more merchandise and DVC properties.

Body has been found in Seven Seas Lagoon. :(

The only good is some comfort to the family having some finality to the tragic event.

Universal Orlando cancelled their reign of Kong press events due to the events in Orlando.

News

Jungle Cruise has gotten rid of any jokes about children and alligators for the time being.

Good reaction from both Disney and Universal regarding all the Orlando tragedy. It is bad enough for Disney that this gator incident is taking the attention away from Shanghai's opening.
