News Round Up 2016

Which leads to my original question...which is wrong. I am guessing it opens in 14 hours, not 26, and the countdown is wrong. But seems odd that the countdown clock would be wrong (it is more visible on the website).

But it would also be odd to open at midnight, which makes me think it does open in 14 hours.

Then again, is it possible the Chinese culture calls midnight 12 pm? I couldn't imagine that would be true?!?
It's possible the countdown clock is in a US time zone.

I could see that...except I wouldn't be the only one to notice the error, which means the programmers there would be getting lots of messages of the correction needed

I am still curious to know what is the fact. Because it will be newsworthy when the park opens (14 hours or 26 hours) and I wanted to pay attention when it does.

I would follow Twitter if you have it. The Disney channel is doing a special on the opening tomorrow night as well.

I'm not really sure you can "plan" 4 years out but to each their own....

Knowing that Avatar Land, Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land should be open by the time we go, then adding in Universal and SeaWorld to our next trip it was easy to drop EPCOT to fit the rest in.

As for our vacation right now I have it outlined like this...

Saturday - Arrive (night dinner safari if staying at AK Kidani if not then Dinner at O'Hana)
Sunday - HS (Early entry SW breakfast?)
Monday - AK (Early entry breakfast at Tusker & Dinner at Tiffins)
Tuesday - Univ both parks open to close (unlimited express pass)
Wed - sleep in, late breakfast at O'Hana & pool day...dinner at TOTW (if not staying at BLT MK view)?
Thurs - Sea World
Fri - MK (Early entry BOG breakfast)
Sat - Home

...but really its just a rough plan which will be updated as you wonderful people give out new info and reviews!

Walt Disney World PR has cancelled Awaken Summer media days on June 17th and 21st. This cancellation happened prior to the gator attack.

At that point you might want to wait for WDW 50th anniversary in 2021.

That is definitely a consideration. Though I am not sure what they could do that would make us want to delay the trip an additional year. We aren't into merchandise so it would really have to be something outstanding.

Its crazy though that I remember the commercials as a kid for the 25th anniversary with the birthday cake castle.

If TDO treats WDW's 50th the way that TDA treated the 60th at Disneyland, it'll be worth going during the anniversary year. The Disneyland Forever fireworks and Paint the Night that they premiered for the 60th were absolutely incredible, and WDW is definitely due for a new fireworks show.

They made a huge deal out of Disneyland's 50th back in 2005 too...that's when they brought attractions from all the Disney Parks to Orlando (which is why WDW got Soarin', Cinderellabration (stage show), Lights Motor Action, etc). It would be interesting to see what they decide to do for WDW's 50th.

They don't have jet skis to my knowledge. Disney does have two person sea raycers.

Could you imagine if they had jet skis? That would be nuts.

Are you able to launch your own water craft in Bay Lake and go to the Seven Seas Lagoon?

I would agree with this - but we can't assume that everyone would think that way. Again, people might assume "No swimming" means it's OK to stand in the water. There could've been other people with their kids already in the water - making the parents feel it was OK to let their child wade in. Not saying it was smart, but just saying hard to blame the parents

Yup - that was bound to happen. May never open again.

Definition of swimming: the sport or activity of propelling oneself through water using the limbs.

This was wading, not swimming.

When you are at a water source, and it says NO SWIMMING, it means do not go in the water.

It does not mean -
- Go in to the water but only wade
- Go in to the water but do not propel
- Go in to the water but do not dip your head
and so on.

It means, do not go in to the water. Obviously there is a danger IN the water even if you can not deduce what.

HORRIBLE SITUATION ... but there really are two stories here. Maybe a 3rd.

1) The actual horrible thing that happened to this family and everyone feels awful for them. :grouphug:

2) Sadly the learning opportunity - DO NOT GO IN THE WATER particularly at night when you have no visibility of what natural critter may be there.

3) Maybe more conversation about Naegleria Fowleri, the brain eating amoeba. This organism is located in the most shallow water where it is warm = shoreline. This organism enters the brain via the nose. A person, particularly a small one close to the ground splashing or playing in shallow water can splash this into their face & nose.

I would agree with that. I'm just saying not everyone thinks in such a rational way. People may think "There's no swimming means there isn't a lifeguard on duty, so they don't want us going in over our head. Just dipping our toes in won't hurt." And Disney does nothing really to stop people. I can't speak for this event, but we were at the Poly in august during the fireworks and there were kids playing along the shoreline and Disney CMs were around showing the movies on the beach and no-one said anything to anyone. DW and I rolled our eyes about it, but it isn't our job to police the shoreline for Disney.

Perhaps the signs should say "NO ENTRY KEEP OUT!" to remove ambiguity. As I said - good chance that things will change drastically now. I fully expect them to fill in the beaches.

I totally hear what you are saying .......... I just firmly believe if someone wants to ignore NO or try to justify their actions because it wasn't explicit, that is on them.

I think the CMs don't say anything anymore because guests don't listen, guests back talk to them and they are going to leave it that there is a sign, so the guest has taken the risk.

Again, feel AWFUL for this family - I think the lesson learned by all is that signs are not for decorative purposes, they are for your safety. Take a moment to read and think before you do.

I think a viable option here is to keep the beaches but totally line the shoreline/water where they are at with water compatible shrubbery so that there is a natural barrier.
