News Round Up 2016

I did not mean it like that. However there are signs that say to not go in the water. I also know that if this is indeed the case the two year old could have run off from the parents or something. This is a fluid situation.

Child was not swimming. Parents were there and tried to fight the alligator. Can people PLEASE stop jumping to conclusions? This is just tragic.

Sad story, but this is basic common sense in Florida. We don't swim in lakes. Why do you think most houses have pools?

The child was in a prohibited area. Tragic, but still true.

Correct. Reports are that the child was wading in the water. You don't ever want to hear this especially with a child or at Disney where fear shouldn't be there, but facts are facts.

You can't be in the water at that time of night. Too risky. Disney relocates large gators, but it wouldn't take a large one to take a small child.

This isn't any kind of situation that warrants levity. Grow up, teetz.

man, there is some paper thin skin on this forum. Can't believe that rteetz "invaded your safe space" by reiterating the signs in the area.

Just because something horrible happens doesn't mean every single person has to handle it the exact same way you do, nor do you have any authority as the "levity police".

I agree someone needs to grow up, but as far as I'm concerned, it's not Ryan.

It's been a ruff week for our friends in Orlando. From a Massachusetts native who is Boston strong I would like to extend my wishes that y'all stay Orlando strong and my thoughts and wishes go out to all affected by the three tragic events this past week.

I apologize but like I said above due to alligators and problems with fresh water in Florida it is not good to go in or very close to large bodies of water.
Given that issue with alligators, then why do they have the boats, jetskis, parasailing on the lake? It sounds like most of these would have a danger associated with them if you happened to go past (or land on) a gator.

I have read over the past few pages a few times and I don't see where rteetz made any jokes??
NO ONE wants to diminish this family's pain. Our hearts ache for them. NO ONE is blaming them.

I stayed up and watched the news conference live.
This is a HORRIFIC event for this family.
I can't even begin to imagine their pain (I have kids).

What was reported by the OC Sheriff:
The child WAS IN the water.
The child was playing in the water about a foot out from shoreline.
The father was standing nearby.
The mother was with other child(ren) at lounge and playpen.
There are signs, multiple, on all beaches at the resorts that say no swimming.

No swimming.
Going in the water = swimming.

This gator was doing what it normally does at night, feed on small things along the shoreline that are splashing about.

Assume I know nothing - if I see a sign that says No Swimming ... my first gut instinct
is there is something dangerous in the water. First thought, something that will make me sick.
Pollution, chemicals, etc. Next thought would be snakes or other critters.

While most don't know about the dangerous bacteria ..... here is an FYI.
IT IS AT IT'S WORST AT THE SHORELINE where it is warm.
A small child in the shallow water is at high risk of splashing the bacteria into their nose or ears.
PLEASE tell anyone you know to not let their children to play in the lakes that are all over Florida.

Florida is like one gigantic animal sanctuary, even at the beach.
Disney can not remove all animals from the vegetation and waterways.
Snakes, lizards, armadillo, alligators, rats, wild hogs, deer and even Florida panthers are on property.
Be aware, think about where you go and do what the signs say.

BREAKING NEWS: ALL WDW Beaches are now shut down.

They don't have jet skis to my knowledge. Disney does have two person sea raycers.

Sure you did t mean it this way but considering we don't know the toddlers fate and this is fresh news your joke reads insensitive...

Prayers to the family what a tragic event.

I don't think he meant it as a joke. Pete's references to the lakes are said in a semi-humorous manner but are completely true. There's a brain eating bacteria in the water - as well as the potential for snakes and gators as seen by this terrible incident. We would never have let our daughter anywhere near the water when she was that size - and no one in our family has even set a toe in the lakes in Florida. (I don't even comprehend how people water ski in those lakes - ick.)

However, not every visitor pay attention to these type of things - the family was from Nebraska and who knows what they knew. The signs actually simply say "NO SWIMMING". They don't specifically say don't go near or in the water or why or warn of alligators. It's a horrible tragedy and really think it is a mistake to fault the parents in any way other than possibly being ignorant of the hazards. You go to Disney and they stick a white sand beach right there - who naturally thinks "Oh a beach - I better stay out of the water."

(We recently had a local tragedy here in western NY where a family decided to go swimming at the top of a large waterfall in Lechworth state park. Apparently they all ended up getting swept over the falls and two of the small children were killed - no less a tragic event - but in that case stupidity was clearly involved. I don't think that this is the case here. I also find it interesting that one tragedy is local news yet the Florida one is national news - simply because (a) it happened at Disney and (b) half the national press is already in Orlando for the OTHER tragedies going on there.)

Back to the specific subject at hand: this will result in major changes at the Disney "beaches". I could even see them eliminating the sand beaches completely.

I would agree with this - but we can't assume that everyone would think that way. Again, people might assume "No swimming" means it's OK to stand in the water. There could've been other people with their kids already in the water - making the parents feel it was OK to let their child wade in. Not saying it was smart, but just saying hard to blame the parents

BREAKING NEWS: ALL WDW Beaches are now shut down.

Yup - that was bound to happen. May never open again.

Question as I am going cross-eyed trying to figure something out (My mind is now working as I stare at thousands of lines of code.

I saw yesterday on a message board that Shanghai Disneyland opens (today) due to the time difference which made sense. On their website it says it opens on June 16th at 12 pm.

12 pm is noon. right now it is 10:00 pm on June 15th. Which my math says it is now 14 hours till it opens.

But on the Shanghai Disneyland website the countdown says 26 hours till it opens.

What am I missing here? I must be missing something simple, but just to check myself I did double check all the facts -- noon is indeed (Dictionary -- but could it be a cultural difference?), the Shanghai Disneyland website indeed says the park is open on June 16th from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm. And the google says it is now 10:00 pm on June 15th in Shanghai. Ok, I need to go home now...

LOL...guess you aren't going to food and wine thenl

I go on vacation to do something I cant do at home.

Within 45min of my house I can have better food with a better atmosphere for less than the price then anything that WDW can offer.

Shanghai opens June 16th. It has already technically opened with soft opening but the grand opening is tomorrow. I'm guessing the times are correct and the morning in Shanghai is all press events meaning the park is closed to the general public.

Yeah, but 12 noon in Shanghai is 14 hours from now, and the website says it opens at 12 pm, which is 12 noon. But the website also has a countdown that says it is 26 hours from opening. So either one of those two is wrong, or...

Note - in Shanghai it will be June 16th in 80 minutes.

It's possible that one of them is wrong.

It's possible that one of them is wrong.
Which leads to my original question...which is wrong. I am guessing it opens in 14 hours, not 26, and the countdown is wrong. But seems odd that the countdown clock would be wrong (it is more visible on the website).

But it would also be odd to open at midnight, which makes me think it does open in 14 hours.

Then again, is it possible the Chinese culture calls midnight 12 pm? I couldn't imagine that would be true?!?
