News Round Up 2016

Question: Both the races are at 5:30 AM. I thought at least one of the races used to be at night. I seem to remember a friend racing and then they kept Epcot open late to celebrate.

Not a runner so I am not sure on this as my idea of vacation does not involve any of the following:
1) Getting up at 4 AM.
2) Running
Yes the half marathon used to be at night. With a party after. With the addition of the 10K they pushed the half to Sunday.

That leaves a big gap between the 5k and half/post race party. I am thinking of doing the 5k in 2017, while DH will do the half. I guess that means we will just have to stay longer:)

I just got done reading the Wine and Dine weekend thread. It seems Disney doesn't want to do night races anymore. I would have liked to see maybe 5K in the morning, 10K that same night then Half the next day? I don't know I think at least one of them should be at night. I do like the theme of the challenge being Lumiere.

Running in FL sounds like it would be much more pleasant after dark. Also not so much with the waking up early.
Mind you, my trips to WDW tend to be the most exercise I do in a year, so maybe not with the running at all.

And while I cannot score the "magicalness" of any particular visit I can say with certainty it is entirely possible to have magical visits in places other than Disney theme parks. There are trips to Australia or France or Spain or the UK people could take that would open eyes, change world views and be genuinely unique and special. There are places to go on this continent or even inside the borders of this country that would cost less and give a greater reward.

Done those and they are one and dones. Nothing brings us back like WDW. 3 weeks in Australia-really don't want to know what that cost.

Luna Park in Sydney was eerily similar to BWV.

The Creme brulee in France was amazing though

I have only done the January race weekend in Florida so I can' speak for the other weekends but January is quite cool in Florida. 2015 it was real cool 30s-50s the whole week. 2016 it was near perfect weather, high 40s to low 70s. Last year for Wine and Dine the course got shortened for severe weather. There have been years where the race is in the 80s and races where it has snowed. Thats why you'll either see a florida race at night or very early in the morning to avoid the heat.

I ran the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror run at 10:00 at night a few years back and it was miserably hot. The temp was 86 f at 10:00 at night. I am a seasoned runner and trained all summer and I still got heat exhaustion. Unfortunately I was so sick I could not enjoy the after party. Night races in Orlando are just too risky with the heat. While it can be hot in the morning, rarely is it going to be hot enough at 5:30 am for it to be a health risk.

We went to Luna park too! Those types of facades were typical of the early 20th century amusement parks - which is exactly why Boardwalk uses it.

And yes, 3 weeks in Australia (with a visit to Disneyland) cost >>> than a week at WDW. I won't share the total costs, but for 3 people we spent $4,800 on airfare, and including the points we used for free flights - total airfare would have run $7,600 alone.

That said - I am all for travel beyond Disney - even though we like to go every year, we like to go elsewhere as well. But it's Disney that keeps us coming back.

Cool, yea it was for 4 and air was over $10K and 4 hours to LA then 16 hours to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, then we flew around Australia for 4 to 5 day stays, ate well (which was really expensive to get something good IMO), nice hotels, the exchange was horrible as well then. Hit New Zealand (skydiving) and Fiji as well.

Hard to beat the airfare to Orlando

I wish that were true. Airfare to Orlando from Austin isn't that great. Plus, there aren't as many choices, and some flights like to fly west before going east:confused3 I think generally airfare isn't good from here. Dallas & Houston usually seem to be cheaper, but not by enough to justify driving there from here to catch a plane.

$34 direct one way and $51 direct home we used last week. Included tax and fees.

Just used the AP and points to stay.

That's pretty good. From Milwaukee we paid $128 on the way there and $132 on the way back.
