News and Developments for Future In-Person runDisney Events

Thanks so much! I emailed her but got an auto reply that she's getting a high volume of requests and there may be a delay in response:-(

I guess all I can do is try my best for each option and hope it works out!
I emailed Joe and Kellsie's Hope he got straight back to me ..maybe worth a try

I wonder... could it be possible that reduced bibs held for charities is an attempt to make more available for general registration?
Yes, sadly I think it is a money grab to sell more. I'm really disappointed in a lot of these changes. Seems the new leadership has different priorities.

And that's my follow-up question: does rD/WDW make more off of bibs sold via non-charity?

That would be interesting to know - the (few) charity websites I've seen indicate that either the runner or the charity pays for registration... maybe at a reduced rate?

My understanding is they do not. Charities are required to pay the same per bib as the general public, they just get guaranteed a specific number (and commit to paying for those). As I think has been mentioned either on this page or other places, the charities then pass that cost onto participants in either the amount required to raise, or they require it be paid separately. Remember that charities can only give people a tax deduction for amounts donated without an expectation to receive something of value in return (making it a donation and not a purchase). That's part of the reason many charge participants for the bib separately - they want to be transparent as to what's a donation to the charity and what part is not.

The only part they (RD) lose out on I think is the 6% processing fee they charge the public. You can call that a discount I suppose but typically that $ would go into operating costs (or a reduction thereon) as opposed to their revenue line, so while it may help their bottom line, I don't think it would be meaningful enough to be the driver here. Although I have certainly been wrong before.

For anyone that's interested (and there probably are / will be several others), here are four charities that seem to be involved with runDisney this season.

https://secure.acsevents.org/site/TR/DetermiNation/DNCY22NCR?pg=entry&fr_id=101288
https://www.atcp.org/event/walt-disney-world-marathon-weekend/
https://www.alexslemonade.org/team-lemon/races
(Alex's Lemonade is showing 0 bibs available right now, but I'd contact them, the page may not yet be updated.)

I've never been involved with any of these charities, but they all seem like worthy causes.

Hope this helps!
For those still looking, here's an additional charity that has a waiting list (until the registration opens up) and should be receiving bibs for W&D:

With streamlining the charities that rD works with (by requiring them to commit to three of four events) it seems like they are just trying to reduce how many different groups they are working with. Seems like an efficiency move to me, not having to update the website with a bunch of different charities for each race, yes for this race, no for that race, etc.

I know it's really disappointing for people (and groups) that this has happened.

Is that the case now...."3 of 4 events"? The ya, reduce the amount of Disney work. I've often wondered how they picked their charities--it seems like a diverse/random bunch of groups. And they often change from race to race, year to year. Makes me wonder how they vet them (beyond a search on Charity Navigator!)

I’ve been reading reports that rD was making groups get a lot of bibs, and for 3 of the 4 weekends.

But today I’ve also seen reports that some charities didn’t get W&D bibs even though they agreed to the new terms. Makes you wonder if that will be a reduced field. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wasn’t excited to see they’ve made the Very Merry Christmas Party into an after hours event rather than a party. They did announce they’d be doing Holiday fireworks for that one unlike the Boo Bash so maybe it’s not necessarily bad news on the curtailing crowds front.

Still, I’m hoping this was just to keep some symmetry with the Halloween event for the year and it isn’t a bad sign that they are still looking at highly reduced crowds in December or might be rebranding their Party events moving forward.

Hi. I haven't been on in a while. Bit busy. Just noticed the charity chat. I went through this one for a Dopey bib.

Not sure what they have left. I will add they mentioned releasing bibs to the public so I think their early list doesn't cover all the bibs

Best of luck to all! Can't wait to go to a meetup and see you there!

It seems odd the Marathon weekend registration is available on their site, but Wine and Dine won't be available until 7/22.

I went to a past runDisney weekend race site and went charity link by charity link to see who might still be a charity partner. I reached out to a bunch as well. This one is really responsive.

I emailed today about wine and dine weekend and haven't heard back.
Try DMing Ashlyn Silvahy on Facebook. Don't know if that will help since FB made it hard to see DMs of non-friends, but she did post a video this morning about focusing on W&D. She didn't give a specific timeline as to when they'd get through everyone, just that it would be before registration. They are an all volunteer charity, so they also work it around regular jobs and families.
