Hi everyone,

We just became BVC members a few months ago and I have a question for you DVCer's in the know. I am going to use only some of my allocation of points this year in July ( Feb use year). I want to travel down in March for a longer stay. Should I bank the balance of my points now and then draw from them when I make my reservation for next year? Do I try to use my old points first? Are there any negatives to doing so. This is my first time doing this and am not sure I understand all of the strategies of using your points. I would hate to lose any. Thanks so much to anyone who can help!

Let me make sure I understand your question.

you have a February use year, You are planning a trip in July 2002 which will not use all your Feb 2002 points. You next trip will not be until March 2003.

If you want to use your remaining Feb 2002 points for a trip in March 2003, you MUST bank your points into your Feb 2003 use year so that they will be available for a March 2003 reservation.

Remember: The points you use are based on the date of the reservation, not when your make the reservation.

Thanks for the information Robin. If I bank them now do I have to tell DVC to use my old points( 2002) first when making my March 2003 reservations or will they automatically do this. Also once I bank the 2002 points can I change my mind and use some of them if I wanted to add on a day in July this year?

Once they are banked they cannot be used for a trip before next Feb...but you could borrow 2003 points if you need to add a day this July.

Depending on the number of points, you can bank up to 50% of your total points as late as 8 months after your use year begins (and 25% up to 9 months later), so why not wait to bank them until you're sure about your July trip.

MS will use the banked points for your 2003 trip, but I'd always suggest reminding them just to be sure. Also, ask for a recap of your point totals with every call made.
