Newfoundland..help!

Okay...so we are making our Maritime vacation about 3 weeks right now and really want to add "the Rock" to the trip.

Any thoughts...what to see and do?

How is the ferry over??

Promise to stop bugging y'all about this stuff..just excited!

My family out to Newfoundland last summer and we had a great time. It was one of the most beautfiul places I have ever been too. The landscape is so different. We took the 14 hour ferry from Sydney NS to Argentia, NF. The ferry ride was long but they had entertainment on board and movies. They offered subs, hamburgers, etc. on the ferry. We paid extra for a bunk bed. This was an experience! We were in a room with about 100 other people sleeping in the bunk bed. It was very loud and none of us slept well at all. Cabins are available but they were quite pricey. The ocean was quite calm and none of us felt sea sick at all. Once on the ship though you can't go back to your car..so make sure you have everything you need when you exit your car.


We arrived in Argentia early in the morning and then spend 4 days in Butterpot Provincial Campground (about 15 minutes outside of St. John's) It was a very nice campground, clean and big sites. During these 4 days we visited Signal Hill Historical Site, Cape Spear (the most Eastern point in North America), went ocean kayak in Cape Broyle, went on a Haunted Hike of St. John's, and went on a Whale watching boat tour. I would do everything over again.

On the forth day we drove around the province to Gros Morne National Park. The drive was nice and I enjoyed it. If we had more time I would have liked to stop in Bonavista but time did not permit. We stayed in Berry Hill Campground in Gros Morne. It was so beautiful! We did some hiking when we were there. The park provides an excellent guide book of the hiking trails available. We also did a boat tour of the froids (highly recommend). We went swimming at a pool in Rocky Habour. We went to a Marine Exhibit. We loved this. We got to see and touch different sea life. We stayed in Gros Morne for four days and then drove to Port Aux Basques and caught the ferry back to Sydney, NS. This ferry ride was only 6 hours.

The only problem we found was we had trouble buying fresh food to cook while in Gros Morne. The small stores only carried frozen foods. However there is alot of fresh seafood that is yummy!

WE throughly enjoyed Newfoundland and we will definately return again soon. If you have any questions please let me know! Have fun planning!

Newfoundland in February, you're a brave one It's hard to say what to do in Newfoundland in the winter. Are you planning to do the trip to Argentia or Port aux Basques? This will make a big difference on suggestions of what to see or do. Also what kind of things do you enjoy doing? Is skiing, ski-dooing on your list or ??

We are planning on a vacation in July..for about 3 weeks in length...not in 3 weeks! LOL!

I would not leave Buffalo in winter..for somewhere colder! Yikes!

We have taken the ferry from Sydney to Port Aux Basques (5hr ride) - it was calm and reasonably comfortable - we then toured the entire West Side right up to the Viking site

Maybe the way that skondo10 did the trip would be the best of both worlds.

Land in Port Aux Basques and then tour up to Argentia and then return to NS.

Thanks for the great info so far....I think I am buying some tour books this week.

Well I"m not much of a camper to tell teh truth, so I love B&Bs. Well if you do only one area of Newfoundland you must do Gros Morne National Park. It's takes everyone's breath away including locals. There's no way to decirbe it except you must see it. Be sure to get a park pass and do the Western Brook tour. I've been on it twice and it's amazing. If you have any questions PM me, I'm always willing to answer.

Deer Lake is a great place to stay. About 2 hours from Port aux Basque. Stayed at the Driftwood Inn for a week a couple years back. Nice place and cheap.

Agreed - also Trout River and the Pond were nice as well
