Newest "Moms to Be" Thread

Are we the only ones who haven't heard a heartbeat yet? We're at week 22 and have gone every month to our doc and had one ultrasound. We saw the heart but haven't heard it. I suspect when we meet for the first time with our OBGYN we'll hear it then?

I think you'll probably hear it then. My OB pulled out this little device and lubed up my tummy--it took like 3 minutes. Seems to me like an OB thing to do. I hope you'll hear it then! Maybe you can ask?

Who are you seeing now? I've been seeing an OB since 7 wks. I heard the heartbeat at my 9 wk ultrasound, and at every appt since then with a doppler. I really am fascinated at the difference in US and Canadian practices. And I really wish we had some of the benefits you guys have! I'm on another board with people from all over the world, and our maternity leave really sucks here!

Yeah! Our maternity and parental leave benefits are pretty awesome! :goodvibes There are lots of countries, though, that offer better benefits than we have.

Again, the maternity practices in Canada really depend on where you are since it is a provincial not federal matter. For us, we live in a small town, an hour away from the hospital where I will give birth and an hour away from my OBGYN. Therefore, with low risks pregnancies such as ours, they typically do shared care. That means, for the first five to six months of your pregnancy, you go to see your GP. Then, the OBGYN takes over for the rest.

Here, GP pretty much won't touch anything after the pregnancy test. Too many liability issues, at least in MS. You see an OB from the beginning. My dr. and hospital are an hour away, too. So I have to plan for a whole day away from work when I go. My last 2 appts were over Thanksgiving and Christmas break, but Jan and Feb I'll have to miss a day of work.

Yeah, I think our courts are a little different here. While it's getting worse, I don't think we're quite so sue happy. The other difference is, we aren't directly paying for these services. So I don't think it occurs to people to be upset with the service they receive since it's all under the universal healthcare system.

I do believe our GPs are trained in maternity and delivery. And I think in many places where there wouldn't be access to OBGYNs and other specialists, they likely deliver the babies as well. Honestly, I can't imagine why you would need a specialist to handle the first few months of pregnancy unless there was high risk or special circumstances. It's a matter of checking vitals and answering basic questions, as far as I can tell.

Everyone has beautiful children!!!

Staley---your 2 are adorable! I lived in Tacoma for a brief time and my stepsis lives out in Puyallup.

You had me laughing about the milkshake!!!:rotfl2: Those kind of cravings are definitely an ALL or NOTHING type of thing.

Piecey --- Rink is adorable. I miss small dogs. We have two Black Lab/Rots that are brothers and they take up way too much room in my house. Between kids, toys and dogs (and not being able to see what's under my belly:thumbsup2 ), I trip over everything!:rotfl:

Starwatcher --- Emily is beautiful! How big is she now? Is she sleeping good for you?
Oh neat! We are in Lakewood!
Yes, ADAMANDLISA, I would imagine that trying to keep oversized turkey in the small oven could get to be annoying! For now, the feelings are good ones in terms of kicking. However, I have started to notice that it is much harder for me to get up when I'm laying or sitting down. I'm soooo front heavy already.
You should see me try to get up... My whole family finds it entertaining. :lmao:

One of my friends had her GP deliver all three of her kids. I went to a midwife until she discovered the twins... It has been the OB for me ever since then.

My OB does all my appointments. I haven't seen anyone BUT her. I haven't even met her Nurse Practitioner.
We've listened to the heartbeat at every appointment except for the first which was just me meeting her, filling out insurance forms and being given a sack of goodies.
She feels around on my stomach everytime, too. I don't really know what shes doing, I've never asked, but I think SHE prefers to do it since she did it the first time. I think people who saw the NP from the first appointment see her for all but delivery and the same with those of us who got the OB from appointment 1.

Luckily, the hospital is a 5 minute drive from my house. And the house we bought is three minutes even closer. I schedule all my appointments early or late, though, because I work 30 minutes from here and want to go before/after my shift.
I can't imagine having to drive an hour for the 10 minutes I'm in there!!

She feels like she 7 lbs. Hubby stood with her on the wii fit said he was holding something 8.7 lbs :rotfl: I need to take her to get weighed. She has slept through the night as soon as we got her home. she eats when she gets hungry. She a good girl so sweet and loving my lil princess:

Oh wow! She is amazing!! Congrats.

I've only seen my OB too. Of course she's been my GYN for 12 years too. :teeth:

What a cutie! Sounds like you all are doing great! I really hope mine decides to sleep through the night early.

I'm surprised to hear that any GPs in the states are still delivering babies. Here there are only certain areas-the larger cities-that have OBs, and they are the only ones who will handle a pregnancy or delivery. Also, only a few hospitals have maternity wards and deliver babies. Unless it is an emergency and you are about to deliver on the floor, most hospitals won't touch you! Here, Flowood is the area in the central part of the state where you find most OBs-their offices are all right around Woman's Hospital, where most babies are delivered. For people with no insurance and low income, OBs come to the health depts a few times a month, and the babies are delivered in the University Hospital in Jackson. I can't think of anyone I know that had a baby at somewhere other than those 2 places.

Wow...thats really great that she sleeps that way. Caleb has been sleeping through the night since he was about 10 weeks old and before that he probably only got up once or twice at the most. Can't really complain...now if the acid reflux would go away then he could sleep in a regular bed (sleeping in his car seat because he throws a huge fit when laid down.)

Hey ladies! Wish me luck tonight! I have a doctor's appointment at 7PM (very weird time) and I'm praying that there is at least some dilation. There had better be with all the cramping and contractions I've been having. :thumbsup2

Would love to see a new pic of Caleb!!!:goodvibes

It really does. I had to go back to work at six weeks when I had DD. With this baby I'm actually hoping for a C-section. I have medical issues that would warrant one, but I'm more excited about the extra two weeks off I'd get. How sad is that when I'm excited to get eight whole weeks off with my newborn?

Is this where I introduce myself? I used to be pretty active on these boards until a couple of years ago. I'm Melessa, I'm already mom to four ranging in ages from 4-11. I found out recently that our family is getting a "bonus baby" around August 6, 2009. DH and I are more than a little stunned, but we've decided there are far worse "surprises" in life than this one. So far, I'm not as ill as I have been in previous 1st trimesters and I feel it the most in the evening instead of during the day which I can definitely live with since by then I've already gone to work, driven the carpool, and usually have dinner in progress. It's nice to meet you all and good to be DISing again.

Wow, 5! My friend was here today from out of state with her 5-her last was born at 37. I'm 36, and this will be my 3rd and final little one!

I'll be 37 by the time this one comes. Granted, I was "done" at 32. Apparently, this little one thought he or she would just sneak in under the radar.
