I'm surprised to hear that any GPs in the states are still delivering babies. Here there are only certain areas-the larger cities-that have OBs, and they are the only ones who will handle a pregnancy or delivery. Also, only a few hospitals have maternity wards and deliver babies. Unless it is an emergency and you are about to deliver on the floor, most hospitals won't touch you! Here, Flowood is the area in the central part of the state where you find most OBs-their offices are all right around Woman's Hospital, where most babies are delivered. For people with no insurance and low income, OBs come to the health depts a few times a month, and the babies are delivered in the University Hospital in Jackson. I can't think of anyone I know that had a baby at somewhere other than those 2 places.
Wow, thats crazy to me.
There are 4 hospitals within a half hour here, all deliver babies. I can pick any of them to deliver at but only three are "Premium Care Providers" on my Insurance and I chose the Catholic hospital right up the street for proximity (and it's where I was born
)I can't imagine driving that far. If I were to drive an hour I'd probably hit at least 4-6 more places I could deliver at.
Fascinating how different it is, even state-to-state.
And this is West Virginia. The wild and wonderful rural state and I've got more choices than you. Crazy!
The hospital in my immediate town doesnt do OB.. but it is part of a network that does have OB. The hospital I will deliver at is maybe 10 minutes away, but there are probably... Jeez... A dozen or so in either direction of my house... Probably more, because I believe I am less then an hour away from Seattle.
Not sure what that even means. But.... I came home with two babies still inside my belly, so all is well.
. Of course, once the kids knew, everyone knew! I teach, so there is no keeping secrets at school. I got really sick the end of that week, and I'm still not over it, so I couldn't have kept it secret any longer anyway.
(Poor guy)
Maybe 20 wks was the magic number for me!
