actually, the sox fan base has been huge for a very, very long time. i can remember the 80s and early 90s when yankee stadium was barely at 40% capacity. whats a fact, the yankees have the #1 selling team merchandise. to try and guess who has more fans... only a fool would try.

but the red sox have sold more memberships in their fan club than the yanks, go figure.

yankees own the world? thats just embarrasing to write.

I HATE the Yankees. My point is that they are very much liked around the World. Who doesn't know about the Yankees? Just like the Cowboys, you either love them or despise them. I despise them being an Orioles fan.

Perhaps I could have worded that a bit different, but the Yankees are the most recognizable name in professional sports throughout the world. I stand by that comment.

The Red Sox fan base has grown A LOT over the past decade. Winning seems to do that...
But to say it's bigger than the Yankees? Go to a game in Anaheim. Or Chicago. Or anywhere else for that matter. There are Yankee fans everywhere. The Yankees are baseball's equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys. Yes, there is Red Sox nation, but the Yankees own the world.

It's hard to quantify whose fan base is bigger, but the Yankees are definitely a more worldwide brand than the Red Sox. They are like the Cowboys and Manchester United, everyone recognizes them. But Yankees revenue and financial resources are definitely much larger than the Boston's.

...I checked Baseball America's attendance figures from the 80's. There were a ton of empty seats to be had at Fenway. In fact, from 1980 through 1985, never did the Sox average 25,000 in any of those seasons.

In the 80's yankee stadium held 57,500+ people. Fenway held 33,500+ people. From 1980-85 Yankee Stadium Averaged 27,600 a game, leaving roughly 29,400 seats empty (51% capacity). Fenway from 1980-85 averaged 22,100 per game, leaving 6,150 empty (66% capacity).

and yes, i know - fenway is obviously smaller. i'm simply saying that yankee fans werent really coming out to support their team - where the sox fans were.

thats dead on - the yankees held 25% of the market share in MLB merchandising. the NY emblem is huge world wide. ...but go to Germany, you'll see yankee and sox hats, ask them if they like Jeter or any other player on those teams and they have no idea who you're talking about. To them its just a trendy hat. However, stateside, if you wear a NY/B hat - you know what you're getting into. ... unless its pink then you probably dont know what the infield fly rule is.

I do watch baseball, except for the Yankees. Watching baseball you realize that every team except the Yankees has players that came up through their farm system. The Yankees just buy (and pay dearly for) players that somebody else develops. By doing that they're hurting baseball. A friend of mine went to their new stadium this year and said it was like going to a shopping mall that happen to have a ballpark in the middle, another way in which they are not helping baseball. Fans should come to the ballpark to watch the game and be entertained by it not by other side shows.

By the way, I'm all for not a Dallas Cowboys fan either!

so from the early 90s up until the last few years, the yankees really havent put much stock into their farm system. they've done exactly what everyone knows them to do - and thats buy players. more power to them, but anyone can write a check.

This buy a championship thing is definately laughable!!! There are MANY MANY MANY owners who have more money than the Yankees and REFUSE to put the money into their team. Where is all the profit sharing money going from the Yankees to the other teams? Well I will tell you....in the owners pockets to buy him another mansion..another yacht. actually, no - the yankees have been buying players since the late 90s up until recently. read the book moneyball.

and money for profit sharing? are you kidding? what about the luxury tax the yankees need to pay out due to their limitless spending. if there was a salary cap, this wouldnt even be up for discussion.

All it is is jealousy from someone like you because your players are out on vacation while my team is still playing. Nothing is every said about the Yankees until they are winning. in all seriousness, the yankees have assembled some of MLB's best and finally reclaimed the championship. as a sox fan, i'm not happy about it - but only a fool wouldnt recognize a better collection of teamwork. i know there are plenty of classless fans, but i also understand there are people that do exude class...to them i say congrats, enjoy your championship. i just saw a clip of johnny damon from last night, asking to compare the 04 championship to the yankees 27th, and he answered the questions perfectly. any sox or yankee fan knows damon cant work the mic...so this is a pretty big deal! haha

Not sure if this was said or not and also, they would never make this official but; Did anybody notice that Game 6 was not sold out? I watched the game and I could clearly count at least 3 dozen seats (the really high priced ones) that were empty from the 1st inning to the last.
