New Years DAY dinner?

Do you cook something special for New Years Day? I’m a bit superstitious, so I always make sure to have pork, greens, and black eyed peas.

This year it is a stuffed pork loin I got from the local meat shop, a grits and greens casserole (Trisha Yearwood recipe) black eyed peas, and skillet cornbread.

No special traditional dinner for NY Day.
This year grilled steak, baked sweet potatoes, green salad and creme brulee

We always had a good New Year’s Day dinner, not turkey since had
that for Christmas. Maybe a roast. My mom always had duck.

We’ll be busy taking Christmas stuff down. We leave for a cruise on Friday so don’t want to come home to Christmas.

I make ham, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls and apple sauce for New Year's Day dinner. For dessert we'll have a lemon pound cake with vanilla ice cream.

In years past, my grandpa would always take us all out for a fancy dinner on New Years Day. Now that he’s gone, the tradition has died. It will just be a regular day for us now.

I have similar good luck foods: pork, sauerkraut, prunes and black eye peas.

This Year my pork will be bacon, which I will use to season the black eye peas as well. I also fix mashed potatoes and crescent rolls as a reward for eating the good luck foods.

Whether the foods actually bring good luck is debatable, but I am not willing to take the chance by not eating them.

No special meal and no guests either. After having to do everything for Thanksgiving and Christmas I take New Year’s Day off. We’ll eat whatever leftovers are in the fridge or my husband can cook. I don’t really care.

It’s usually something “better” for New Years Day. Prime rib, or a fancier beef/chicken/seafood dish.

I’m making steak pinwheels, rolled around spinach and cheese.

Ham, black-eyed peas, cabbage with bacon and onions, Holiday Potatoes, and corn muffins.

I foget how many years ago it was we decided to carry in Chinese food for
New Year’s Eve and actually this year got it for last night and will have tonight and tomorrow night.

Not usually anything too special. This year our team is playing that night so probably appetizer type foods in front of the TV while watching the game. We are hosting NYE tonight so probably a late start to the day. Might start taking down some of the Christmas stuff. One of my least favorite jobs of the year. ☹️

So, salmon head sandwiches, borscht, and berries is probably not traditional.

It's not for me, either...but I have a guest arriving from Poland who wants my daughter's Borscht as his 1st meal...and I told her, make it for 1 or 7, it's about the same.

Then, I figured cold sandwiches with soup is good. He loves salmon, but the price of fresh salmon filets is not worth making sandwiches out of (12.99/lb is way too rich for me)...and canned salmon is gross. So, I bought multiple salmon heads at Hmart for $2.99/lb, and I'll cook them to get the shredded "meat" off and into the fridge, and then I'll boil the heads for a fish broth (for grits) for later in the week. Since I'm not going anywhere tomorrow, since my spouse is handling the airport arrival task, I'll have the time.

I'll make a lemon dill aoli, and I've got lettuce, tomato, avocado, and onion for the sandwiches (more veg means less fish and less money - win/win).

And he loves fresh fruit, especially berrries, and blueberries were cheap...and they'll be easy.

It should be a New Year's Meal to remember without being one that breaks the bank. And it can all be "fine" while we see if his flight in on time or delayed, so the meal's not ruined no matter when he arrives (and my spouse and one kid get back)...

I am thinking of making lasagna, just because.
Lasagna is never a bad decision. If anyone tells you otherwise, I wanna hear about it!;) I don't think there's anything special for us food wise tomorrow. There's still leftover stuff here from last weekend. Maybe I can convince DW to make a lasagna:idea:

Many years ago we had a big dinner with family and celebrated the day like we do for Thanksgiving/Christmas, etc.

Now, after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and NYE dinners, I like to sit back and relax. If we have leftovers great, if not, something simple.

We do make lentils - for good luck and prosperity

DH and I are at my parents' house -- she's going kielbasa/sauerkraut and pierogi. DH's mother makes a version of goulash. When DH and I are at home, I'll either make that goulash (DH's request) or short ribs with mashed potatoes.

Yep, Filet Mignon steaks and French 75 cocktails with leftover champagne.

Homemade lentil soup, sourdough bread and veggie salad. Red & white wine and bourbon cocktails. Bar will be open…We usually host our neighbors for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl. They always bring over apps and fun snacks. 🌹 🏈 🎊 Not sure how many people will be coming over. Door will be open! Edit. Parade and game are on Monday. Still hosting both days. Non stop partayyyy haha

My late great-aunt used to make Pepper Pot soup on New Year's Day every year. She lived on the same street as us so we always got a big container of it. I don't like tripe at all, but the broth was delicious.

Now, we don't do anything special. This year we got two 24 inch hoagies to cut up tomorrow and eat while we're watching the Mummers.
