New Years DAY dinner?

My wife fixes black eyed peas because she is superstitious,

We always make pork, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. My Mom also made it every New Year’s Day. It’s supposed to bring good luck in the New Year.

Every year we make pork, kielbasa, a sweet sauerkraut with brown sugar and apples( an old German family recipe) , mashed potatoes and vegetables. This year's vegetables will be broccoli and salad. Our dessert will be some cupcakes for my daughter's bday next week. She will be going back to college this week and we won't see her on her bday. This is also one of her favorite meals so we can celebrate New Year's day and her bday together.

No special traditional dinner for NY Day.
This year grilled steak, baked sweet potatoes, green salad and creme brulee
This was our dinner tonight (with Boston Cream Cake, not creme brûlée). Tomorrow's dinner will be Italian Sausage and Mushroom Ragu with either pasta or polenta.

We used to have pork with sauerkraut, prunes, apples, and onion, but as 2 of the 4 adults here don't eat pork, we'll do something different. We are just finishing up the lasagne from Christmas. I think we'll make cheesesteaks with the leftover top round roast we had on Thursday, and I'll make macaroni and cheese because I have the stuff on hand. I also have leftover cooked ground beef AND it's on sale this week, so I'll make either a pot of sloppy joes or a meat sauce for spaghetti- or both! DH and I leave for NOLA on Wednesday, but DD and her husband go back to work on Tuesday, and the 6yo is back in school, so I'm hoping to leave them some easy dinners for the week, as we usually share the cooking chores.

We had our traditional New Year’s Day dinner -

Pork Roast - because pigs root forward like we move forward into a new year
Sauerkraut - because the cabbage is for luck
Hoppin’ John (w/ black eyed peas, of course) - because the peas are for luck & also represent coins
Collard Greens - because the greens represent money
New Potatoes - because it’s a new year
Cornbread - because it’s for gold & prosperity

And donuts for dessert because the circle of a donut represents the circle of a full year!
