New Year...Can we get rid of "this" already?

I used "This" in a post for the first time here yesterday. It clearly must be old and tired if I'm using it. ;)

Actually, "This" is to the DIS boards as "Like" is to Facebook.

You want to do away with "I agree" and MTE as well? They mean the same thing. What's wrong with agreeing with someone?
Well, "I agree" doesn't take much more time/effort to type, and it's a - wait for it - complete sentence.

No, that's not a complaint about grammar or usage, and yes, I know this is a discussion board and posters 'speak' casually and don't really care about how they present their thoughts. I get that.

The OP made a request. That's it; not a command, not an order, not a decree. Anyone who disagrees will continue to use an entire post to say "this". Go for it.

While we're at it, can we eliminate the "+1"s? :teeth: Say something.

Well if we are requesting eliminations, I would like to request that we eliminate all the "cutsies," like "ressies, "brekky," "kiddos," "binky," "paci," "nekky."

That

Better?

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I love it! I'm thinking maybe I'll use "this" on even numbered days and "that" on odd numbered days, to keep it fair.

I wouldn't be sad to see those disappear, although I do call my own kids "kiddo" from time to time.

I like the response "this."

Sometimes a poster says exactly what you were thinking. I could rewrite what they posted, or I could just write "this" or "agreed".

I don't want to just skip posting because sometimes the OP really wants to know what people think and it's helpful to know that most people fall on one side or the other of an issue.

I have posted "This." The reason I have is that when reading the original post I thought of my response and then see it posted almost exactly as I thought I would, so I just say, "This."
Next time I'll say "agree." or "I agree completely," or "This is exactly what I was going to say," or ...

I have no problem when someone says "this" to agree with a previous poster.

Why type out your whole response, to agree with someone, when you can just type "this?" I don't see anything wrong with it.

+1 is another way someone agrees with someone else, nothing wrong with that either.

But we all have things that bother us. What bothers me is when people put other people down for what bothers them. I've been called a crabby old b**** just for saying something bothers or annoys me. I can completely understand disagreeing with me, but the name calling is just ridiculous. Kind of like going back to junior high with some people. They just must be perfect to never have anything bother or annoy them. ;)

Like.

If how people respond on a message board is the big thing for the year, then you're having a really good life-or a really bad one that something so insignificant is worthy of energy expenditure.

I must admit that I prefer complete sentences as well.

In defense of the Original Poster, she didn't equate it with curing cancer. She simply stated a preference. You can agree or disagree, but it was only a post on a message board.

I'd lay odds that you would have received more agreement if you had titled the thread "irrational things that bug me on the Dis". Because I'm sure you're not the only one, but I'd venture to guess that putting the blame on yourself instead of everyone else would have worked more to your advantage. I see stuff all the time that bugs me, but that's my issue... not the other way around.

Jussayin'. (And now I'll patiently sit back and wait for someone to tell me they hate "jussayin'". ;))

I disagree kaytiee. I think the OP ruffled some feathers with the part I bolded below...
I absolutely hate it when posters put "this" in response to something someone else has said. Drives me batty. I try to skip over it, but really, if all you have to say is "This", then don't say it...it's repetitive and stupid and means nothing.

Can we ban "This" from the DIS for next year?

Okay...I know, someone is going to read this, and post "This". Yeah, been there, seen it.
Basically, she called some posts "stupid". Not a good way to get people on your side. Also, the "then don't say it" IS a command/order/decree. A "request" would be "please don't say it".

People have responded to why they use "this" (or "that", "+1", "agreed", or :thumbsup2). They all mean the exact same thing.

This.

:lmao:

I admit, some phrases within internet language annoy me too, but instead of letting it get the best of me I just calmly navigate to a different web page. It's very easy to do.

Let's eliminate everyone's pet peeves. Oh, wait a minute... hmmmm.

I enjoy the DIS. I'd rather it exist than not.

Really?

So now every opinion thread needs only to be 3 posts?

The OP, one post to disagree and one post to agree - sounds like fun!

This Diser even took the time out of her life (?) to PM me when I did this on a thread. Seriously....

Woah...

The OP had my full support until I read this post. I was going to come on here and post with cheerleader smilies, and "Go-OP!, Stand strong, I agree with you," etc, until I read that you PM'd someone about it. That's just taking it a little bit too far, don't you think?

I HATE "this." Put some effort and thought into a response, or don't bother. But also don't be a stalker and PM people about what they respond, for heaven's sake! You had me until you PM'd! You had me until you PM'd. :sad2:

And I swear, I think it was the one and only time I had ever done it! I can usually put a whole paragraph together on whatever a topic is, but I think in this one (and only) instance, the PP had just said exactly what I was thinking, and probably said it better than I could have. It was something I wanted to "support", so I simply put "this" - Then later in the day I got a PM from this person pretty much telling me how "small minded" I was for doing so.
