I am going to replace my TV. I plan to get a flat screen to probably hang on the wall. Should I get Plasma or LCD?

I am not going to be much help but we just got the Aquos LCD and love it...DFi researched it alot and chose LCD over the plasma. I believe it has something to do with images not getting burned on the screen...DFi and DS are big Xbox players...

The picture is amazing.

We prefer LCD.
If you are handing on a wall, I think plasma's weight twice as much as LCD!

Plasma. The picture quality is better. Burn in is a somewhat of a myth. Yes, you can get picture burn in with a plasma- but only if you leave the same picture on there for hours on end. For example, pause something and not come back for a day or two.

We have two in our home. They are watched daily. Xbox 360 is played on both of them almost daily. We have not had any problems with burn in.

That is not even close to being accurate. A JVC 40" LCD weighs about 68 pounds with the stand and 55 without. An LG 42" plasma is 69 with the stand and 55 without. Those weights were taken from the Best buy site to give a rough comparison.

To the OP- what size are you looking for? That will some what direct, as the sizes are limited by both formats. You will have a hard time finding much selection of LCD over about 37", and a hard time finding plasma under 40". It can be done, but you wont have as much to choose from.

We just bought a 46" Samsung LCD. I think it weighs ~85-90 lbs. but not sure.

We chose LCD because we get afternoon sun in our family room and were told the high gloss screen of the plasma would make the glare worse. LCD really does help with the flat/matte screen.

We love it. We researched and were going to go with Sony Bravia but in the end chose Samsung because it ended up being $1200. cheaper (we had to rip our shower out so we needed that extra $1200.;) ).

We have a wall-mounted LCD. I've been really happy with it. According to my DH, plasma has a shorter life-expectancy. I don't know anything about them--I just okayed the purchase;)

The plasma may offer a better picture but my parents ended up buying a widescreen HD LCD over a plasma because the salesman told them that there isnt enough technology out there to fix minor problems in plasmas yet so basically if it breaks you might be SOL and my dad isn't the kind that likes to throw his money away at new gadgets so we went with the LCD and the picture is wonderful and of course they had to get the digital cable to go along with it!!

Thanks all. Just talked with a friend who also told me the sun played a big part in his decision of purchasing LCD vs plasma. I live in an old farmhouse FULL of windows. It is very very sunny.... If there is glare, we will have it. His farmhouse is the same. He said the plasma is much worse with glare....
I will look at both tomorrow, but if the glare factor is a big one, will probably go with LCD.

I would love to hang it on a wall, but the wall in question may not be feasible due to an old chimney going thru there.... So I will have to see.

Thanks again for all the help.

Good advice here. Please take a critical look at both formats before you buy.
They are both excellent, YMMV. If you get a chance, look at some standard def material on both tvs. Hi def looks good on just about everything. You may find that SD is better on one than the other.:)
