Hey all just found this little piece of heaven this morning. We made or first trip to Disney last year took me an dmy wife 33 years to get there so now the next trip is planned for next spring . Its a grad gift to my youngerst sister who just graduated from Acadia University. Figure it is the only way she will get there with the cost of university now she will have student loans till she is 80.All little girls need to see the castle in person. We are thinking of buying into Disney vaction club as we have to small girls and another on the way, but being from NS they cannot pass along any info to us from the DVC office can anyone explain it to me how it works with the points and cost's. Otherwise I will have to wait till we get there next spring and take in one of the seminars.
Welcome to the DIS. For general information I would go over and read the DVC Operations board here on the DIS. Except for some headaches if you decide to sell (there is a US tax that is withheld) and it is trickier to do the direct debit to pay the yearly maintenance there isn't a difference between be a US or foreign owner. You should also check our www.m o u s e o w n e r s.com. You'll have to remove the spaces manually. It's one of those sites that you can't have in postings. A great site that helped us make the decision to buy DVC.
Thanks for the great info I have done some research and as I have read bette rto have money in bank as appose to financing so think we will wait a couple years and pay cash. I want a couple weeks worth of points so better to wait couple

You have to take the pay cash/finance thread with a grain of salt. In the ideal world it would be nice to pay cash for everything. In the real world some big ticket items require loans. On the DIS there is a real stigma against taking a loan for a luxury item. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the people paying cash are a vocal minority. Even the Time Share Store now offers financing on resales. They wouldn't be doing that if there wasn't enough interest. Only you can decide if DVC is valuable enough to you to purchase using financing.
Three things to think about that may help you decide. First you don't need to buy all of your points up front. Many people buy one week and when it is paid off purchase add-ons with cash to get the up to the level they believe they need. Second take a look at how long it will take you to save the money to purchase the points with cash. Then calculate how much you would spend on rooms at WDW during the same time period. You may be surprised how much of the points cost you would have paid off. Third what is going to happen to the exchange rate. If you think the rate will maintain its current level then waiting will be okay. Having the Canadian dollar fall will add to the cost.
It was the first two that made us purchase now using credit. The exchange rate is really a intangible. It rose a fair amount from the time we put down the deposit to the time we closed. If the closing had been slower we could have saved more but that would have drove me crazy. We used our line of credit since it has a much better interest rate (Canadian rates are lower right now than the US rates). We bought resale but if I was buying from Disney I would have put it on the credit card to get the points and then paid off the credit card with the line of credit.
What we did was buy a contract of the minimum amount of points (150 at SSR) in Oct 2004 and financed it through Disney and had the payments come out of our master card - that way we got the points for our m/c too. Every time we had an extra thousand or so we would call Disney and have them add it to our card and pay it off. Paid it off in full Jan or so of this year and are finally taking our first trip home this October - 2 weeks can't wait!!
We will think of a smaller point add on soon too!!
