New to cruising - have a question about cabin selection on the Magic

My friend and I are planning a Disney Cruise on the Magic for 10/30/10. 20 whole months away (seems like forever).

We have narrowed it down to Category 8 or 9 because we want a port-hole window. We have also narrowed it down to Decks 6 or 7. Our travel agent has reserved 7004 and 7006 for us (adjoining). But they seem so far up front. I’m thinking that all port-hole windows are up front, though. Is that right? Will it take us forever to get anywhere? Also, is the port side better than the starboard side (in terms of what you can actually see from your window when you are docked)?

Thanks so much for your advice and help. I’ve been a member of the Dis for quite some time now – but this is my first Disney cruise. I’m guessing I’ll have lots of questions for you all in the next 20 months!

I would suggest going with a Cat. 9 on Deck 2. It will save you some money over the 8 on Decks 6 or 7, plus you'll be able to be more mid-ship as the 9s run the length of the ship on Deck 2.

Ditto....the Cat 9's and Cat 8's are exactly the same size and shape but the Cat 9's on Deck 2 are less expensive. There are no Cat 9's on Deck 6 or 7...those would be the Cat 8's.

The Cat 9's on Deck 1 have 2 smaller portles versus the 1 large porthole in the cabins on Deck 2 or 6, or 7.

I can tell you from experience that cabin 2546 is a great cabin. Spent several cruises in that cabin. Perfect location onboard for everything!!!

If you look at the pic below you can see that the portholes of the deck 2 Cat 9 cabins....they are the smaller ones right below the larger row of portholes (Deck 3).

Decks 4 and 5 are where the lifeboats are and Decks 6 & 7 are where the porthole windows are at the front of the ship (Cat 8's) (above the Disney Magic logo).

Here's a vote for the CAT 8.

1. We love the forward deck because there are less staterooms. Decks 1 and 2 are just rows of staterooms. Our stateroom area has no foot traffic. Gives the illusion of privacy. While safety has never an issue, I feel better in the secluded pocket of Deck 6 or Deck 5 forward. You have no reason to be there unless you have a room there. We have never lost a door decoration or had teen age pranksters in the area.

2. Proximity to the Children's Club and WDT. We have kids so being forward is GREAT! For our upcoming Eastern we are in staterooms 5512, 5510 and 5508. I'm talking 20 feet from the entrance to the clubs. We love the shows as well. So, its down the stairs (one flight) and we at the show or shopping in the store.

3. Forward Elevators. You will often find yourself all alone in the forward elevators. I always felt like the we were going in the opposite direction of the evening rush hour traffic. SWEET!

Yes, you are a far away from the drink station and restaurants. But as a personal preference we are not "that into" sodas. Also, "FAR" is rather misleading. DCL ships are not the mega ships of other lines. From bow to stern can't take more than 5 minutes.

The pool area of course is aft. Again, we don't make a big fuss over pools. We live one the east coast and have an inground pool in the family. Normally, we stay at Ron Jon before or after the cruise where there is a huge waterpark. If we do not do Ron Jon's we hit Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon or Aquatica. Needless to say the pool onboard is low on our priority list.

Actually, forget everything I said. I don't want to give away our secret location. I don't mind to extra $300 for our oasis.
