NEW-STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST-Questions/Answers

Question for Starwood fans...Does anyone know if Starwood was successful in it's bid in bankruptcy court for the Aladdin property in Las Vegas. They were the top cash offer and Marriot (I believe it was Marriot) was second but they had great dollar for improvements.

Would like to see a Starwood property in Las Vegas finally!

Starwood is also partners with Planet Hollywood to take over the bankrupt Aladdin casino and resort. Looks like we'll have lots of choices to earn/spend those starpoints in Vegas.

June 20, 2003
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A federal judge selected a joint venture involving Planet Hollywood's co-founder and the Starwood hotel chain to buy the bankrupt Aladdin hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert C. Jones on Friday chose OpBiz, a partnership that includes Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Bay Harbour Management and Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl, because the group had the backing of secured and unsecured creditors.

"It boils down to a not so difficult a decision," Jones said. "The bottom line is what the constituency groups want."

The judge's decision ended an 18-month process that included a frenzy of last-minute negotiations between bidders and creditors during a standing-room only purchasing hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Three parties attempted to compete with OpBiz for the Aladdin during Friday's proceedings, but none had all the requisite pieces of a deal in place, especially all-important financing.

Aladdin lenders concluded that OpBiz had the total package. It was the "bird in hand" that the judge wasn't willing to risk getting away, he said.

OpBiz has been in talks with the Aladdin for about eight months, and was named the stalking horse, or lead bidder, in the bankruptcy case in May.

OpBiz intends to assume $510 million of Aladdin debt and other liabilities. OpBiz will invest $90 million over three years in the 2,567-room hotel-casino and keep all of its employees.

The Arabian Nights-themed resort will be renamed Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino. Starwood, the sixth largest hotelier in the nation, will manage the hotel through its upscale Sheraton brand. It will receive 4 percent of revenues plus expenses, and give the hotel chain a coveted spot on the Strip for its preferred club members to redeem and earn points.

"This is the one of the world's greatest hotel markets," Joseph D. Long, Starwood senior vice president of acquisitions and development, said after the hearing. "It was the number one target market for us."

Earl could not say how long it would take to transform the Aladdin. OpBiz still must obtain a state gambling license, and Jones must approve plans for the makeover when they are completed.

Aladdin lawyer William Noall said it could take until March 2004 before Earl completes a deal with his lenders and the Aladdin emerges from bankruptcy under new ownership.

The $1.4 billion Aladdin opened in August 2000 and filed for Chapter 11 protection about a year later. The Aladdin owes unsecured and secured creditors more than $588 million.

Do you know how many points it costs to upgrade from a standard room with a teacher discount to a room with a balcony? Thanks for the help. I find the rules for using starwood points confusing. :( :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I too would like to know how many points it is to upgrade standard room on teacher's rate at Christmas to Club Level. Thanks for the help!

I got back a little over a week ago. I upgraded to club five days before arrival for 1000 points, from a standard room at teacher rate.

What type of room did you end up with after paying for the upgrade of 1,000 SPG points a night?

We have a standard room (on the Teacher's rate) for November and have the 1,500 a night needed for the upgrade to Specialty Room Level 2 and am curious to what to expect.

kapp,
I called five days before arrival and upgraded to a club level room (which is a Specialty 1 upgrade, 1000 points). we were given a room on the twelfth floor with a view of the Swan. I had requested a certain room which we had last year when we went in August but that was not available. Actually when we checked in they had put us on the West wing 6th floor, not on club. I told the person checking us in that I had upgraded to club 5 days earlier, so he left and went out back and came back and apoligized but they had NO rooms on club (other than smoking rooms) for that night, so we stayed in the West wing for the first night (with club priveledges) and moved onto club level for the next four nights. I know some people prefer this but with the kids I like being on the same floor as the club lounge.

Oh, so I would call the hotel after doing the point upgrade with starwood and make sure they have the info. it was a bit of drag hashing it out at check in.

Still trying to decide to do the CL or just a room upgrade.

We did club level last April and it is a must! The convenience of grabbing a quick bite in the morning and then a little snack in the evening before heading out for dinner or whatever was well worth it. And don't forget Mama T ,she's the best! We will definitely be requesting club level for our trip in December.:Pinkbounc

Rec'd official word from both Swan and SPG that CL is 1500/pts per night. Was charged this during a recent stay and questioned it after and was told that it is correct:(

Definately worth it tho, the CL staff at Swan were great.

Wow, when we stayed at the Swan this past May, it only cost us 1000 points per night to upgrade to CL. Mama T & Thebo were wonderful!

I JUST talked to SPG yesterday and was told CL upgrade was a Specialty 1 upgrade - 1000 per night for the Swan.

Urg. I got the Starwood card about a month or 2 ago for the sole purpose of accruing points to use on this upcoming trip to the Swan. At the time, they were offering an initial 5,000 points on first use of the card and I even called to make sure that I was entitled to them, and they would post before I left.

Now, they have not posted, and talking to the AMEX people, they say that they will start an investigation, but nothing will be done about it for another month...far too late for this trip.

Has anyone else had problems getting their sign-up bonus? Did you get it resolved in a timelier fashion?

Feh.

So I am assuming that you had made your first purchase and have paid for that bill - I have noticed some of the bonus offers take a month or so to get credit to the SPG site.

I would call AMEX myself if I were you - it is a challenge to make sure you are talking to the right person at the right division of Amex who can help you with this but if you are persistant it will pay off. Don't leave it up to Starwood to do this you need to be work through Amex specialty cardmember services.

Good luck - I'll send some pixie dust your way!

Also call and verify the SPG # associated with your AMEX card. I found out that they had accidently opend a new SPG Account for me when I applied for the card.

It seems that the 1500/night charge comes when you upgrade at checkin, we tried to do it ahead of time, but was told nothing was available. I have seen people posting that upgrading ahead of time cost them only 1,000, and doing it at the desk cost 1500.

I hope we can upgrade ahead of time for our fall trip!
