New Standby Line Idea (comments, anyone?)

Suppose that standby lines were changed so the wait time under normal conditions was never more than about 20 minutes. After the line got that long, no one else would be allowed to join the line for the time being.

For that ride there would be three doors for standby guests in slightly different locations. For example one might be in the former Fastpass Minus kiosk area, or one might be inside a gift shop. At random times a different door is opened and a sign with arrows lights up above each door to let guests know which door has opened. Perhaps five to ten minutes worth of guests are allowed to enter and wait and then the door is closed. The corridors would then merge together somewhere before the boarding area.

Wheelchair or DAS guests with come back times would be told which door to use, although not the same door each time and not necessarily the same door as other guests entering during the same time period.

Generally the doors would be in high traffic areas and guests would not be permitted to congregate closely around any of the doors.

Anyone want to comment, for example where might guests wanting to wait around anyway mill around or hang out, or what kinds of stampedes might result?

Then you would just have lines form outside the ride for people to make it into the ride during the "five minute window" and blocking the paths outside of the rides. I don't think this is a good idea.

You would go from having long lines into the queue to long lines outside of the queue.

How about this: give everyone who enters the park a "shotgun start" map and time to begin their programmed series of rides. At rope drop, the first 2,000 people will be told which ride to go to, and then every 2,000 people after that will be lined up behind them. Each ride would be completely manned and started on time, and each set of riders would start at a different ride. After each ride finishes, they all move on to the next ride on their list, all deconflicted and sequenced so that those going on rides will even times out with those seeing shows. All timed periods stop a half-hour before parades and fireworks, and resume 15 minutes afterwards. Anyone breaking their sequence by more than 15 minutes will take their map/schedule to a kiosk, where their bar-coded (or RFID'd device) will be "rejoined" to where their cohort would be.

Probably would still be cheaper than MB/FP+/MDE...

This idea sounds even more ridiculous! Who wants to vacation like that?:(

Neither of these would be feasible for a park rookie who still doesn't know how to work a fastpass, or is still looking to catch the monorail from their hotel straight to Animal Kingdom.

Basically your idea is that people with a DAS can schedule to get on rides and people without a DAS card have to cross their fingers that they can enter the line at all once the people with return times get through... So if I take my family we might be milling around the area for an entire day HOPING to be near an entrance to get into our favorite ride never being able to enter the line, literally or in a virtual queue? Meanwhile a family with a DAS card can reenter the line every 15-20 minutes all day effectively blocking us out. You would have so many extra people wandering around barely missing the windows you may have guests who can't get on a single ride because everything will be at 20 minutes all day due to the sheer volume of people panicking and going to any line they can actually get into. Say good bye to quick access to the tiki room or treehouse even. You would have to be a complete idiot to enter the park without taking a disabled person because they are the only people who could be sure of riding anything at all.

Try rethinking if you like this idea assuming that a wait under 20 minutes means they won't accept your DAS or give you a return time. Now, is this version of a line favorable to any single person in the park? Your idea is great for people who get a DAS card, but is horrible to anybody else.

I can see so many things wrong with this scenario.

If you think people are rude now just watch what would happen if Disney tried implementing something like this. You'd have a lot of pissed off people . We'd start seeing a lot of threads about fights/arguments/ shoving/ kids getting ran into or knocked down. And even more threads about " Our vacation was ruined" . Sorry, this is a disaster waiting to happen.

I guess that could be one positive. Crowd levels would most likely drop quite a bit after people have had a few bad experiences and decide to take their vacation $$$ somewhere else.

Haha - OP I love your spririt!

You basically took the basic concept of a virtual queue and made it as complicated as you can :)

IMO the overall goal is (or should be) to make queueing as simple and as efficient and simple as possible. I think your plan would decrease efficiency.

A virtual queue by nature is going to be much more efficient than a queue that requires you to stand and wait for something. Increased efficiency will have postive results for many but will/could have negative results for those who had adapted well to previous inefficiencies. I thnk making changes to the scheduling policies and algorithms would have a better chance at improving guest satisfaction than adding inefficiencies back into the system. I suspect/hope Disney has already been doing that and will continue to do that in the future....

So you want people to wait around high traffic areas for a chance to enter one of three random doors in a very limited time frame and in an orderly fashion…what could possibly go wrong?
