Have any of you ever made a squash book? I am making them as baby shower gifts, but they can work for any occasion. And they are pretty simple to make. When they are done, they open up like an accordian.

You need-

a sheet of 3/16 white foam board. Make a paper template of a square 6 1/2"x6 1/2" Cut the squares with a craft knife. You will get several of them.

a piece of ribbon about 3 feet by 1/4" or1/2"

Double sided tape

2 sheets of patterned paper

7 sheets of card stock

Take the patterened paper and lay face down. Center the foam board over the paper and fold the top and bottom edges of the paper up andtape down to the foamboard. Take the left and right sides and fold the corners (like wrapping a package) and tape them down and then the sides. Repeat with other piece of foamboard and patterned paper. Take the ribbon and tape it to the middle of one of the pieces of foamboard (on the folded paper side)Do this so that after you put it together, you can tie the ends around the book. Afterwards, take the 7 sheets of cardstock and fold each one in 1/2. Rotate it and fold in 1/2 again to make 4 squares. Then (this is the hardest part of the whole thing) fold the paper from corner to corner just ONCE. At this point you should end up with the card stock having 2 squares and 4 triangles. Lay your paper so thatyou have a square on the table and pick up the corner with the other square. Suqash the paper so that the triangles fold toward the center (this will be opposite of how they are creased) and the top square lies on top of the square and folded triangles. You should then end up with a 6" square.

Repeat with the other papers. Once you get the hang of it, YOU"LL LOVE IT. After you've folded all of your cardstock then take the tape and tape them together. To do this, lay your first sheet down with the open corner facing to the top right. Take the next sheet and turn it in the oposite direction so that the open point goes to the bottom left. Put the tape on the top of the bottom square on the second sheet and slide it under the top square of the bottom sheet. This joins the 1st and 2nd sheets together. Repeat with the other sheets. When your done taping all the sheets together and pull up, all the sheets should be attached like a long accordian.

After this, your almost done. Take the tape and tape all four sides of the outside or the bottom square and attach it to the foamboard piece with the ribbon to cover the ribbon and the open area of the foamboard. Then tape the outside of the top square and attach it to the other piece of foamboard.

Your done. Then you can add pictures to any surface of the album. You can add more pages of cardstock as long as it is an odd number.

I hope some of you try it. It really is cool and not as hard as it sounds.

This sounds cool but I can't totally visualize it. Would you please post some photos?

Yeah, I need a visual too...but it does sound cool!

Can you take pics and upload to photobucket? That is the first step. From there you can have the pic show up in your post, or just post the link and we can go there...

Oh, and :welcome:

Sounds great but pictures may help...Thanks for sharing.

just as an fyi, there is a very long post over on 2peas about squash books, someone was claiming that she has a patent on them and that this other person was to cease making and selling them on her ebay store pronto. (I think if she does have a patent, it must have been issued in error cause these books have been around forever and a day) I'm sure if you did a search over there you would fine a zillion pictures of various squash books though. :) maggie

I saw that. I just don't see how you can patent stuff like that.
I think you can make them just not sell them. But Maggie is right, there are a ton of squash books out there and the patent lady's plan is very specific so you can work around it.
