Really nice for people that just have to have a FF camera, but I do way too much in the way of sports photography to be too tempted. Nice addition to the line-up, however.

I like this addition to Nikon's lineup. I knew as soon as I purchased a D300, this one would be released. I never thought it would actually be within about 24 hours, though! The D300 makes much more sense for me anyway, and I have no desire to move in the FF direction.

I am curious about why the viewfinder coverage is only 95%........

Just as the 5D totally owned the market in image quality for anything in it's price range, I think the D700 is likely to do the same for Nikon. I'm excited by it because I think it ratchets up the pressure on Canon to update the 5D to almost unbearable levels. If I shot Nikon and didn't live at the long end of the focal length range, I'd be all over a D700.

The new flash looks really cool as well. A zoom to 200mm will be a great help. I'm a little curious as to why the upper end of the zoom range is the same for both DX and FX formats. I would think that the zoom on the flash would be determined by the field of view, which is different for DX and FX. I'm curious as to whether it only zooms to the 200mm on FX FOV or whether it zooms to the 200mm on DX FOV.

I've been holding off getting a flash for my D300, I am glad I did. I'll definitely have to look into the SB-900. Not sure I can justify the D700 for the type of shooting that I do. Besides Trina would kill me if I suggested we get another camera right now.

I agree with the other posters. While I think in a few years we will all be using full frame or more right now Nikon has taken the next step. While laying down 1800 for a D300 is a stretch for many. 3000 is still out of my range other than a trip to divorce court.

Their new FX lenses are amazing. I have had a chance to play with a few with a D3, so expect to see that line of glass to expand.

The SB 900 does not surprise me either. The 800 has been amazing since the day it was released. the 900 is a natural progression.

I see a number of professionals using the 700 as a second camera to the D3 just at the 200 was to the D2.

The only thing curious in the article is the line, "Unlike Nikon, Canon doesn't typically allow lower end models to challenge its higher end ones."

Is this really true, when the Rebels get the newer, higher-mp sensors before the x0D series do? Granted, the image quality is about the only thing than the Rebels have that's comparable to the x0D series, but regardless, it was a pretty good stretch of time when you had the choice of a 10mp XTi or an 8mp 40D... and now, the 10mp 40D is followed fairly quickly with a 12mp XSi.

The D700 is certainly going to be a great camera and may cannibalize D3 sales - but how much money is there really to be made off such a camera? For the vast majority of users, this is merely a halo product, and the D90 is a much more important camera. In fact, I think that most people who aren't shooting posters or doing a lot of very wide-angle shots would generally prefer the 1.5x crop sensor (especially if ignoring the emotional appear of having a full frame.) The D80 is starting to get a bit old, I am really surprised we haven't heard some more hard data about a successor. I'd guess we'll see it by Photokina or earlier...

I think your right about that Groucho. I don't know that I'd ever want a FF body. At this point I prefer the 1.5x crop.

Regarding the D80. It was announced August 8, 2006 and was first available for retail sale in Sept '06. Which is almost the same amount of time from the D200's release time and the D300's (Nov '05 - Aug '07)

I'm surprised they've gone this long considering the history with the D40-D80 (and all in between) being a little more than a year apart on average between new releases.
