my daughter needs glasses. I have never bought them before. How much should I expect to pay and do you know where is the cheapest place to go? Thank you

The ACA mandates all health insurance plans to cover eye exams and one pair of eyeglasses per year (after deductibles and copays) for children under 19. If your child is covered by health insurance, check to see what providers accept your plan.

You can also check on line. If her prescription is low then Zenni optical is super cheap and has almost the same styles you'll find anywhere else.

Also Warby Parker is a flat $99 and you can order 5 frames to try on at home then send them back before ordering.

Has anyone had any luck with this? Our insurance specifically says it covers eye exams for children, but eye glasses are not covered...

JCP always has a back to school sale for kids glasses.

Here were the details for last year:
Complete pair of Kids’ designer eyeglasses for $29.99
Offer includes select Kids’ frames up to $120, FREE impact & scratch-resistant polycarbonate lenses, FREE UV protection and FREE eyeglass protection plan for any school-aged child 16 & under.
Dates of promotion: July 6th – September 15th

I would think the time frame and pricing would be similar for this year. We got my son glasses with this deal a few years ago. At that time the deal was $25 for frames up to $100. We were allowed to shop in the kids and adult sections and just pay the difference when the frames he chose were a bit over $100.

Another vote for Zenni. I can get a pair of glasses, sports goggles and sunglasses for what a single pair of glasses cost me at the B&M store, and the quality has been exceptional.

My daughter is twenty so a couple of suggestions won't work for her but I thank you for them

Is warby Parker $99 for everything? She only needs glasses to drive at night. I checked out one place so far and they were $258. The only extra we got was anti glare. I thought this sounded like a lot

Depends on the lens material, frames and insurance. Last 3 pairs of glasses I bought were $800......$400 out of pocket after insurance. It's hard to find frames for less than $125 and that is highway robbery in my book.

How does that work? With all the measurements they have to take for the positioning of the correction in the lens and frames, how can they do that without you going into a store?

For someone who has worn glasses for 40 years... The best I have had has been from independent offices. Lenscrafters is outrageous and mail order has never worked for me.

I just tried For Eyes and I will never go back. Rushed exam and am not satisfied with my prescription nor the lenses I received.

I have never tried JCP or Walmart

Exactly what he said

You can get the measurements from your optometrist. The only place I've had crazy measurements was somewhere that had digital PD and there is no difference between that pair and the pairs I've bought online. PD is all that they need to buy online. Bridge and ear piece are up to the individual.

My prescription is -7.25 in both eyes and correction for astigmatism so not low index at all.

I get my glasses at BJ's. My eye exam is done at Costco. I have bought glasses at Costco also. I have progressive lenses. They are also transition lenses. With the anti glare/HD, etc. I paid $225 at BJ's. Would be about the same at Costco - I liked the frames at BJ's better.

So I tried mail order. My problem besides the child frames I received from the men's collection and the lenses I couldn't see out of, was that the frames needed adjusting to my head for a proper fit. So who do you go to? If the store doesn't sell that brand, they won't touch them as they know you didn't buy from them. I have had to send back 3 pairs. Never will I do mail order again.

We have similar prescriptions.

Your post reminded me of my experience at Costco. Never bought from BJs. But costco was like going to an independent office. Not very expensive and quality was top notch.
I haven't used costco in years because they never have frames I like. I like small lenses to avoid the coke bottle look. Hard to find small lense frames. I am talking 45 or smaller lenses.

What adjustment did you need? Lenscrafters will do adjustments on any glasses theh are just clear that they aren't liable if they break them. I've never really needed mine adjusted as an adult though as they come level and then I try to take good care of then.

3 of my 4 kids wear glasses and never has our health insurance covered the full cost of eye exam or glasses. We have Tricare Prime. Now my husband has GEHA dental which includes vision with EyeMed and that only gives a discount, doesn't pay for it. I just paid $105 for a eye exam and contact exam for my son. We did pay $40 for the Optomap.

We just picked up my son's first pair of glasses today! We did the exam and got the frames through Wal-Mart, as I did for myself a few months ago. I hear that Costco is good too for the exam, but that their frame choices are very limited. I paid just around $100 for the exam and glasses. If you pick out a simple frame and do not go for all the upgrades (scratch resistant, glare protection, etc.) your cost can be quite reasonable.

I get my eye exam at Costco, but the eye dr isn't a Costco employee, you can use insurance if you have it and whatever credit card they accept, they are bound by Costco's cc rules because they are an independent eye dr. My eye exam including contact exam was $95 without insurance, it went up 5 bucks from 2 years ago.

Any contacts or eye glasses you get is through Costco, but my contacts are cheaper and I don't have to pay shipping. I haven't gotten glasses there because I don't like any of their styles but they will put new lenses in my current frames that I got at another eye dr if I want.

I really like the eye dr at my costco and it's part of why I keep my membership. What I save on my contacts and shipping pays for the membership for a year.
