Am I right in assuming that the Swan/Dolphin does not have any shuttle service to/from the airport? Are cabs or towncars the cheaper way to go? Man I will miss DME!

BJAKMOM,

$28.00 sounds like a good deal. Is that the bottom line price? (Taxes, fees, gas, etc)? It seems like a fine line between a rental and a towncar. Let me know if you remember.

Thanks!

OK, I just went on line to National Rent a car and used my codes from the Gold C book. A compact car was $28.48 with a free two car class upgrade which gets you to $28.48 for a full size car. The Taxes, surcharges and fees are $7.47 for a total of $35.95 not including gas. So that come to $71.90 round trip not including gas.
Tiffany Towncar is $95 - $5 coupon for a total of $90 round trip.
So lets say I use $10 in gas (being conservative), is saving $8.10 worth the hassle of renting and returning a car and driving myself? I think I would rather have somebody drive me.

Sorry, I just had to run through the math for myself. I though it might be beneficial to somebody else....

At $28/per day it probably would have been worth it. It is all those darn fees that kill it.

I did this same math excersise but for the one way rental (we can use DME on the return portion) but I also included that we usually tip our town car driver $10 - 15 each way so if you add that in the rental is cheaper for us. But I will miss having someone meet us at baggage and transfer us - were arriving really early so we figured having a car would give us some more freedom for that first day!

I also booked mine on Alamo using a Costco discount.

DolphinBoy - $28. was the total price for me - I did the same (compact up to full), but that was the first weekend of Dec. - low season.

Does anyone know if you can get a roll away bed at the Swan or the Dolphin? If so how much does it cost? :confused3

HOOKEDUP,

Good point about the tip. There is an extra $20 - $30 easy round trip. I just need to find some good rental car deals...

Thanks!

There are rooms in the east wing that over look the Boardwalk and YC/BC....and you can see the high fireworks from Illuminations. We had a balcony and from outside we could also look beyond the Dolphin and see part of Wishes in the distance.
Miss Communicate,
Thanks much for sharing info about the east wing. We are such "early to bed" folks that watching the fireworks and then returning "home" - well, it would not happen. We have made two trips to DW since our daughter was born (she is now age 8) and have yet to see fireworks...

By the way, love your quote, "a true friend will be sitting next to you saying
"Damn, that sure was fun!"

Kate

Glad you like my quote Kate!!!

An alternative to a rollaway that's worked for us is an Aerobed. It rolls up to the size of a sleeping bag and the one we have has bedding with it - kind of like a sleeping bag. We have a DS who's 14 and a DD who's 11 and they love it - they take turns between the Aero and the bed.

Okay, I've been on the WOnder, so I've had a few days to get over the disapointment of the Dolhphin. I'll start by saying we were "upgraded" by DCL from POFQ to Dolphin for our land/sea package. We paid for a pre night at the Dolphin before our package started.

Here is what I learned:

1. Mold/Mildew odor: you could smell it the minute our door opened to the room. Both my sister and parents had rooms in the same area as our and their were fine. It took several calls and over an hour for someone to come and spray something in our room. The told us we could move, but we wouldn't be near the rest of our party. This was important to us since I would be alone with my two young children for part of the trip and were counting on being near the rest of my family at aid in watching and helping with the kids. My son has seasonal allergies and his nose was stuffed the entire time we were there. I have slight asthema (only comes out with brochitis or such problems) I needed my inhaler while I was there (thank God I b rought it, since I ususally don't need it). My mother has 30% lung capacity and she could not be in our room because she couldn't get enough air to breathe. You could see the water stains on the lamp shade.

2. The bathrooms downstairs are not wheel chair accessable or child friendly. If I were not with my mother, she would not have been able to get in the bathroom. The toliet in the handicapped stall was broken and not usable, Lucky for us Mom was able to transfer out and into a regular stall. There is no child changing station in the bathroom.

3. Fountains is not wheel chair friednly and the people working there stood behind the counter watched as my Dad and I tried to get a wheelchair through and a stroller. No one came to help us, offered to move chairs out of the way, put tables together so the 5 of us could sit comfortably. Very disapinting considering there were only 3 other tables of customers, the rest of the resturant was empty.

4. With Tubbis gone, it is not particularly child friendly. I accepted the upgrade when I read about this Tubbis considering we have 2 young children and were in need of quick and "cheap" ways to eat early and late. So, I was not happy to find it closed the night before we arrived. No one offerd us advise on alternative suggestons. We went to the little counter at Swan one day for breakfast and didn't think there was a variety, dissapointed in the lack of interaction at the character breakfast. Once again, it was only 25% full and only visited with Goofy for a few minutes. Food was okay. Lunch at the poolside grill was very limited. We spent $45 for a salad, sandwich and two kids meals and none of us thought the food was even good. Fountains was okay, but the service was terriable and there was not much selection. I ran to the store one night hoping to find little bottles of juice or something to eat and was disapointed to find only "souvineer" type candies and cookies. I suppose you must order room service. I know Boardwalk is an alternative for food, however I don't think it was particularly close if you are on time contraints...

5. I would like to know the deffinition of "deluxe" Disney uses to describe this hotel. With the exception of the heavenly beds (which I will agree, they are) I found the room no different then any chain hotel. The plastic modeling that goes on corners was coming off. Paint was chipping off the bathroom doors. The door to our room stuck and was difficult to open at times. There wasn't even a vent in the bathroom. Yes, it was large (they should provide guests with preprinted maps), the cordless phone was a nice touch, there is a large selection of resturants, and the boat to MGM and Epcot was very connvient. I did not find the staff particularly friendly with the exception of the young lady I talked to at bell services (or what ever they call where you hold your luggage until the room is ready) and the housekeeper Rose I spent time talking to was supper nice.

Sorry to all you loyal D/S visitors. We had a bad expereince and will not return and will not reccomend this to anyone else. When we checked out, my husband was assured the hotel manager would be contacting us regarding our problems and I did fill out the comment card and the interactive TV survey. We checked out the 5th and I am currious to see if/when we are contacted.

Long and short of it - if you are using a wheelchair, with young children, or have breathing problems, run, do not walk away from this hotel.

j rgonz-so sorry about your disappointing stay. I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago and I too am taking my family including a wheelchair and young kids with me. On what floor were you located? Did you have a handicapped room? Was the rest of your family on the same floor and did they have the mold problem? Since we called and talked to them about our needs up front, they gave my mom and brothers an accessible room with an adjoining room free of charge. Also, because of Tubbi's supposedly they are allowing us to have CL privileges too. We'll see how things turn out when we get there. Again I'm so sorry to hear about your disappointment.

Dreamflight - yes, both rooms were in the east tower but not on same floors. One had a balcony and was in the corner where the wing meets the main building. The other had no balcony and was on the 10th floor (a preferred floor) and in the main part of the building- Room 1040. I have seen numerous posts on these boards referencing mold and mildrew so I don't think it is an isolated problem. The first time it was mainly an odor. I looked and couldn't find any "visual" evidence. The second time the odor was less noticeable, but the visual mildrew was all around the window. We didn't open the drapes all the way until the last day when we were packing. When we did the window was dripping with condensation. Quite honestly we spend very little time in the room, except to sleep. There seems to be more negative posts since all the hurricanes. Next trip I will do an extensive inspection and if I can see it or smell it, I will ask for another room. This most recent trip was on spg points, so I guess I felt funny complaining. Don't get me wrong I really like the Swan. The beds are great, the location is great and you can get some really great deals. But mold and mildew are a real health issue and if you or your family has respiratory problems, it can make the difference between a great vacation and a trip to the emergency room. I only want others to know of the issue so they are not disappointed or made ill by their choice of resort. I was contacted to do a survey when we returned and I referenced the mold, mildew and odor problem in the appropriate places in the survey. I haven't given up on staying at the Swan, but next time I will check the room out on check in and if it has a midew problem or odor, I will insist on another room.

I was told by both Disney and Dolphin that no one would do luggage transfer to from any "Disney" property to Dolphin. I hope the Bell people will change their minds when I get there. Also, I called the cab company and was told about $10 to go from AKL to Dolphin and about $45 Dolphin to MCO. Disney thought cab from Dolphin to MCO about $60, but now I read here $80-$100? Who had actually taken this cab ride? I didn't want to have to rent car for one-way trip. I have been to Disneyworld 7 times and never had this much trouble. I hope Dolphin is worth it.(Trying to get my happy feeling back... :guilty:

Both National and Alamo are at the Dolphin, so I rent with the one that's cheapest!

YES...me too! I get the discount codes from Mary's site at www.Mousesaver.com~! Alamo was less expensive each time this past summer. Please, say hello to MELISSA for me, she's been the regular at the counter for the past 13 years! :thumbsup2

DolphinboyThere are also about $6.oo in TOLLS on the way to/from the AP also (if I recall correctly). So...this brings you even closer to the TOWN CAR price. BUT..it's also nice to have a rental car for the day too...as you can keep it overnight and park it ($7.00), perhaps go get groceries, etc.--if you want to pick-up some snacks for your stay. :confused3

Gail~That sure is a nice Areo bed (the one with the bedding, etc). What a FAB idea, as they run about $100.00. Therefore, for the cost of renting a rollaway for four eves, you could purchase and own an aerobed! Also, many companies which sell these online, would also SHIP to the SWAN or DOLPHIN, saving you space/luggage on the plane. When it comes time to leave, you could use the box it arrived in--and the business office--to ship it back to your home! ^_^

j_rgonz~Sorry you had so many problems. :sad2: We have never experienced anything such as you described all the years we have visited and stayed at the WDW Dolphin. Which only proves, different strokes for different folks. :confused3 The boardwalk is about a 5 minute walk (to the convenience store where they have a little grocery section). Tubbi's is closed, but they do have the STORE/GROCERY section open. They have everything from bottles of juice to litres of soda & 6-packs available too. They sell full-sized bags of chips, as well as everything from cup-a-noodle, and canned soup to pop-tarts. It's pretty well-stocked.

You very well may have experienced the same problems over at POFQ, as there are no child changing station/tables in the bathrooms either, and the size of the baths are tiny, (rooms too). The food courts there are also crowded with chairs and tables, etc., clogging the way. I have also been onboard the Wonder and the Magic several times, and can't imagine the difficulties you experienced there with the wheelchair (as we had a wheelchair-bound guest at our table this past summer on our 7-eve Western Magic cruise, and she told us it was HELL getting around the ship/room). :guilty:

Perhaps, next time you visit WDW--you'll have a better time. Many people love the Dolphin/Swan, and continue to visit year after year. I'm one of those people, and will continue to return time and again. There have been reports over the years of similar problems with just about every resort on Disney property. If the service and treatment was consistently poor--no one would return. Therefore, inferior experiences DO occur, but they are usually extenuating and not the norm.

orlandomama~They've been telling me the same thing over the phone for years. I've never had any problem when I'm there in person. ;)
The cabs are never the same rate, and never a SET/FIXED rate. I called for a cab from a train station in NY to Kennedy, and the company told me about $50. Ended up costing me $120!!! So...with traffic, time of day, etc---you never really know, (all are contingent factors in the price of your travel).

You are MUCH better off taking a town car from the Dolphin to MCO. It's a lot farther than you think, and could even cost more than the prices quoted. The cab from the AKL to the Dolphin should not be much more than $10 as they are relatively close and there is not much traffic on that road. Just relax and enjoy the things you are planning to do. As for the things you have little/no control over...just smile and let it slide. :cloud9: :wizard: :yay:

TTFN...DF99 :wave2: :goodvibes

Blondie!!~Thanks for the awesome pictures!! I LOVE looking at the scenes from the Swan...looking over the water, etc. My worries disappear just LOOKING at them. Thanks for sharing! :lovestruc

luvdmouse - We were in room 11149, my parents and sister in rooms 11157 and 11159 and they had no odor. We did not have a handicapped room as my mother is fortunate to walk short distances. We didn't want to take a room from some one who truly needed that type of room.

orlandomama - Have you considered using Mears to get to the airport? We were forced to use them in leiu of ME (something about ME not going to the Dolphin on the particular day we arrived) and despite the disappointment of the video and more comfortable ride it worked. Also, my husand used it to get back and forth to the airport and my brother in law used it to get to the Dolphin from the airport when he joined us later and were all satisfied with the service. It is $18 one way.

dreamflight99 - I saw nothing open at Tubbis and I guess we missed the grocery store at Boardwalk when we walked there. I understand we have no way of knowing what our expereince would have been at POFQ and that the rooms were smaller, it just trully was a disapointing visit. We are fortunate that my mother is able to walk short distances so once she was in her stateroom we could fold the chair and she could walk. We didn't incounter many problems getting around the boat itself and all the servers and crew were quite helpful in making way for her chair. Even storing it out of the way while we were in dinner and bringing it right back to the table when we were ready to leave.

Dreamflight99,

Thanks for the reminder about the tolls. The cost difference is so close, I think I will let somebody else do the driving while I kick back and relax.

Thanks!

Magical Express (as such) doesn't provide transportation to the Swan or Dolphin. Sometimes a ME bus will be used to transport Mears paying passengers between the Swan/Dolphin and the airport, as that was my ride back to the airport in December. I also paid Mears for a one-way ride on the ME bus to the Yacht Club, and then walked from there to the Dolphin. I had one rolling suitcase and a tote bag so I was fine, but I wouldn't suggest that for people with lots of luggage.

I'm sorry your stay at the Dolphin was disappointing. I have stayed at the Dolphin 6 times and at the Swan 8 times, and I've never had a room with mold or mildew. I can see how having a family member in a wheelchair or young children desiring meals at Tubbi's could affect one's perception of the services and facilities at the Swan/Dolphin. I go to WDW solo most of the time, and since I've been staying at the Swan most recently, I rarely go to any of the eateries at the Dolphin. For my situation, the resort fits me perfectly.

Is the mold problem really bad @ the Swan? I booked it for my mom, brother and his 2 kids for My 29-June 3. The kids have never been and it's been 15-20 years for mom and brother. I really want it to be special for them. My mom expects everything to be almost perfect and a moldy smell will mess this up. They will have a 2 queen room with a balcony and resort view.

Actually, we were on a DCL package and the Swan/Dolphin resort is part of their land/sea package so they do use ME to transport people that are part of the package only. We booked a pre night and since it wasn't a normal package day, we were taken via Mears van which was difficult with all our luggage and stroller. Plus, I'm not sure what the laws in FL are, but I was very uncomfortable using a van with my 2 1/2 year old not in a car seat.
