New Dress Code

What about shorts? We cruise in the summer, so no way will we be wearing jeans at all, but it'd be nice to have a "casual" night in the restaurants when you can wear *nice* shorts.

P.S. I honestly couldn't care less what other people wear to dinner; in no way does it detract from my own experince. However, some people were wearing what I shall call "extremely casual" clothing even with the more strict dress-code in place. I can't imagine how some people may dress now that they can officially wear jeans.

Thanks for understanding....Im glad that you understand that I can't get mad at people for dressing how they want :) To be honest I would love to wear jeans but I just wanted to dress up for at least one day and not be the only one. :flower:

I know a lot of first time cruisers like myself probably will or have packed all sorts of dress up clothes, so i can understand if the 2nd and 3rd time cruisers not wanting to dress up. I know after I cruise with Disney the first time...I may not want to pack anything but a bathing suit and cover up for my next cruise "laughing: My dh already told me he's going to pack hisself cause he knows I will over pack. Have a great day

Wow, I did not get this from the original post, but if you feel this way, then great..Glad to see you are open...

I love to dress up, because working 365 days a year, I do not get much of a chance to dance.. :cool1: But DH looks better than most in his jeans and shirt...

Have a great evening...It is fun to agree to disagree.. :goodvibes

The "Dress" threads are always my favorite. :rotfl2:

I too believe that getting dressed up while on vacation is less then fun. I often thought that out of the 168 hours (give or take an hour) on the ship formal night is the least enjoyable, but to each their own.

Buddy Bear, I agree with you 100%. DH and I go to Topsiders on formal night and enjoy a very comfortable, relaxing dinner.

If Mickey and Minne can dress up for Formal Night why cant other people ??

Thats just my opinion ... If you dont feel like taking a garment bag then rent something

again just an opinion

flame away:rolleyes:

:) :) :) Well, my kids love dressing up. DS wants to wear a tie all the time. LOL! DD knows that some of the dresses in her closet are cruise or special church dresses and she loves getting all dolled up. Honestly, I think they behave as well as they do in the dining rooms because they are dressed in special clothes and do receive complements which of course make them feel more special. Our packing wont change.

This subject has been the cause for more flames than any other I have seen since I went on my first cruise in 2002 and started participating in this board.

There really isn't any need to flame; some people like to dress and others don't. It really is as simple as that.

For my wife and I we "suck it up" and do what is required, but run back to the stateroom and throw on shorts as soon as we can. ;)

SeaSpray, on the 3/19 Magic cruise, the Navigators continued to request no shorts in the dining room in the suggested dress section, although the request for no jeans that also appeared on our prior cruise was gone, consistent with what has been posted here. I believe that our cruise documents still stated no jeans (but then again, they also still said that the theme night would be tropical without mentioning pirate at all)

Sorry, I guess I should clarify, I think that the no shorts request may have applied to dinner only; I never have eaten a sit down lunch on the Magic and know nothing about the dress code

Thanks :) We were on the Magic and it's fine to eat breakfast and lunch in shorts. At that time, they just asked for no shorts or jeans at dinner.

Yes you can wear shorts at lunch time, just no bathing suits! I personally hate getting dressed up...I bring dress pants and blouses and wear them and change right after dinner...I do draw the line at bringing a formal gown/dress though....and sure..people could rent them but only guys can do that..they don't rent dresses from what I saw in the brouchures! I try and pack as lightly as I can, no way am I hauling a garment bag with us too. We are skipping formal night this cruise, for 2 reasons, we don't want to get that dressed up and I didn't care for anything on the menu that night.

No matter what the rules, people will interpret them the way they want. At my work where jeans are prohibited, some ladies wear the velour "JLo" style sweatpants (skintight) and think that they are within the boundaries of the dresscode because they are not in jeans. IMO, jeans have come a long way in the style dept. The darker, bootcut jeans can look pretty dressy with the right top and shoes. That being said, some people will think that ripped faded jeans will be appropriate. And maybe in Disney's mind that is okay, too. I'm sure if they implemented the new rule, they had to have considered all of the issues.

I think when your spending the money to travel a more luxury enviroment it should be expected you need to dress nicer than normal. If not whats fun at staying luxury hotels and the such? The enviroment of that just makes it fun also.

I dont mean to offend anyone here... To each his own... But I just think that part of the fun in going on a cruise is to dress up....? :confused3 Anyone else feel this way?

I agree with you. My DH wears Dockers and a golf or tropical type shirt. This is in no way "dressed up", but he looks nice. He even wears sandals with his dockers. I usually go for a capri outfit. Actually, I guess this is "dressing down" for us.... :cool1: I just don't want to feel like I am eating at McDonalds.

The dress code threads have always been some of my favorites. It fascinates me that so many people care what other people wear to dinner, etc. I was so stressed on our first cruise because I was so afraid that I would not pack the right things after reading these boards. While on the cruise I realized how silly I was to care because we saw everything. We were seated next to a family who wore old t-shirts and shorts to dinner every night, including formal night. My meal and experience was still exactly the same as if they had been dressed to the nines. My formal pictures were still the same because we were dressed, didn't matter if his family was or not.

We enjoyed getting dressed up the 1st cruise. After the 3rd I realized what a huge waste of valuable vacation time I'm wasting getting all of the kids dressed up and getting my hair just perfect only to eat a meal and waste more time getting undressed again. It's a personal perferance. Would I go to the restaurant on formal night not dressed appropriately, no. Not because I was afraid that I would ruin someone's meal wearing khakis but because I respect the guidlines DCL sets. Will you ruin my meal or will I care if you choose to not follow the guidlines set by DCL, nope. I just care that my servers are friendly, my meal is great and my family is happy.

I totally agree! When we first started cruising I loved getting dressed up for dinner! But, it does start getting old... I dress up for work every day and I sometimes I don't feel like going back and showering and dressing up for dinner - goodness knows my husband doesn't want to. But, part of me does like dressing up for dinner as well. Especially on the 7 day - I don't like dressing up every night. I don't know what we will do for our next cruise in November... Probably half and half. I personally won't wear jeans - it is too hot. But, I don't know what my husband will do...

Wow, I started this thread and sure has taken off. I have a question. On hte 4 day cruise the dress up night, is it formal or just nice dresses? :earsboy:

Just wondering, is formal night still required on the 7 night, or can you go casual on those nights also.

This is one of the reasons we decided not to go on the 7 night cruises anymore. We found we had to tote along a whole other suitcase just for formal stuff for the family. It was way more than we wanted to deal with at the airport.

If formal night now optional?

These type theads are always a hot topic....we still enjoy dressing up even after 13 cruises....I dress up all week at work, but I still enjoy the "dressed up" atmosphere of the cruise, especially formal nights. I pack a long dress, as do my two DD's. Son and hubby pack one suit to use for both nights. I don't get the statements that people have to pack a whole other suitcase for formal clothes....we each only take one suitcase and everything fits just fine.

And, jeans weigh and take up more space than any dress pants (male or female), so I don't buy that argument that it is less to pack. If you mix and match and wear things more than once (which is totally acceptable) there is no problem with luggage.

People can wear what they want, it is their vacation, their decision, and now it seems to be OK with Disney, but to say that by being allowed to wear jeans will save on luggage space/weight is just not a reality...will you wear the same pair every night, or bring a few pairs...which will really add to the weight of the suitcase!!

Happy sailing....

it is funny how some people get so offended when others dont want to do what they find normal or fun.

God made us all unique and that is what is so nice about the world. Everybody has their own tastes and we should not get upset nor talk down to anyone who doesnt agree with us. We should focus on what is really important and that is not how we look on the outside, but how we act on the inside and that will affect how other's percieve us more. Actions speak louder than clothes.
