NEW...DOLPHIN/SWAN..."questions and answers"...tips and hints!

Boy, do you all take me wayyyyyy back. Youngest dd is finishing her last year of college but i can join your enthusiasm, my 5 year old grandson begins kindergarten on Monday andi know my oldest daughter (25) will be crying! She is taking the day off to see him off(driving him the first day).

DF - thanks for the wonderful pictures- thoroughly enjoyed them!!! Sorry your trip is coming to an end - but all good things do end and your DD is going back to school soon.

Mouseteacher, #1Hockeymom and all other teachers -hope your school year is great!! We begin Professional Development on Monday for 4 days and then convocation on Friday. Kids arrive the day after Labor Day. I really do look forward to each yr, and while i do, retirement will be a word in other people's vocabularies - but i only have 5 years to go!

Have a great Wednesday everyone. Caroline

Dreamflight - love those photos. They took awhile to load on this awful connection but boy were they worth it!

Believe it or not I actually have been pricing my flight for next summer. I don't dare book yet as I may have to shift my dates slightly. But it looks to be about $251 per person on Northwest non-stop from Minneapolis to Orlando. I would be happy with that. Since it is just myself and DD going I hesitate to rent a car - may just do it for a day if I change my mind. I can do that at the Swan can't I, if I remember correctly?

We may spend a couple of nites at Universal - what is the best way to transport from Universal to Swan? Call Mears at the Swan? Any guesses on cost?

Hi! This question has probably been asked hundreds of times, but I tried to get through the start of this faq and after 34 pages.....I am beat! You are all so nice to continue to answer questions from us newbies! So here it is:

Which do you prefer, the Swan or Dolphin, and why?

We are planning a trip to WDW this Feb. 2004 and I am trying to decide between POR and S/D. This is our first stay on-site. I have always wanted to stay at POR because I love the theme but boy, S/D sounds so nice (and affordable with the gov rate)!!

Thanks for your help!!

but have never stayed at the Dolphin (and would love it, too, I'm sure1!)

Reasons?
1) Great Value
2) Wonderful Location and view
3) Personal Service
4) Luxurious beds and spacious rooms
5) Beautiful grounds and furnishings
6) CL breakfast (Mama T and Thabo)

Okay everyone! Chime in! There are lots of reasons out there...

PS I have stayed at POR as well, and it was nice also.

I have stayed at all 3 - S, D, and POR. Swan and Dolphin win hands down! Now... which... S or D????? I honestly can't pick one over the other - they are both terrific and we had magical stays at both! I guess I would say you can't go wrong with either one.

Caroline ~ I wish you a happy school year, too! Retirement?!?... I think about it during stressful moments on the job and sigh. But, I still have at least 10 years to go. ;)

jgates ~ we priced a Mears transport to Universal last summer and I think it was $40 (I can't remember if that was one way or round trip). We scrapped the idea b/c we just can't pull ourselves away from Disney. We need to do a longer trip to include US - now that's a good idea --- a longer time in the World!! :bounce:

Swan vs Dolphin - I tohught I read that Dolphin had twin beds and Swan queens? That doesn't sound right - Dolphin is so large I suspect they have many 2-queen rooms.

Once the renovations are done in the Dolphin I suspect there will be little difference. Dolphin is bigger - views may be different, but overall the service is the same. We stayed at the Swan, friends at the Dolphin - we were all very happy and impressed.

Disbug - I started to sketch out a trip report on the train to and from work, and may have it done in the next couple of days.

Thank you for the great responses so far. I just called to check on availability and rates for the Swan. For $25.00 more a night, we could get a lake view room with no balcony vs. the standard. Is this worth it? I am okay with no balcony because of my young kids and it would make me nervous if they were out on it. Is the standard view all that bad? Should I just go with it and hope for an upgrade at check-in? (I joined SPG and we will be celebrating 2 birthdays)

I don't think my DH will go for it, but is CL just so much better? Is it worth the extra money?

Thanks for your help!! :)

Ladyjayhawk, since you don't want a balcony I would go with a standard room. You can request an upgrade in advance and at checkin. Club Level is nice but not worth an extra 50.00 per day. Make sure you get your SPG number on your reservation and make note of the two birthdays. Isn't planning vacations fun?

ww52, The Dolphin has full size double beds. Can you imagine the uproar if they only had twins? As far as I know the Dolphin is not switching to queens like her sister resort (Swan)

Disbug, Hockeymom, Mouseteacher and DF, Lets all plan a trip to meet next summer at S/D?! Wouldn't that be GREAT?!

Happy planning to all folks headed to WDW and S/D!

WOW...I'd TAKE the flight at that price! If you book it online, using electronic ticketing...if the price goes DOWN...you can easily obtain a credit by calling the customer service department. If you use paper ticketing, you will have to physically go to the ticket counter for a refund of the difference. Book that SOON!

If you have Emerald Aisle (National), you can rent a full size car for as little as $28 from MCO to the Swan. You may drop it off at the Dolphin valet anytime before your rental is due back. They will bring it to the counter for processing. Very...VERY convenient. Also, the best way to transport from Universal to the Swan would either be via cab (Very reasonable), or rental car at the resort (Portofino has Avis...just rent the car for your transport and call them to COME and PICK IT UP at the Swan. Free service). Again, these options are MUCH less than Mears.

Also, there's one other way. The Universal resorts offer very inexpensive transportation to the theme parks. If you only have a carry-on and a shoulder bag, etc., you could EASILY take this to the park...and hop on the SWAN bus when you arrive! I saw folks coming on the Dolphin bus weeks back from the Magic Kingdom, with luggage! They informed us they came on the transport from U. Studios to check into the Dolphin! LOL...the father said it was much less expensive than a direct transfer, and MORE of an ADVENTURE!

Went to Sea World...and enjoyed the park. It's one of our FAVS, as there are always seemingly few persons visiting this late in August. It's such a tiny/quaint park, where we always recall the times we have shared in the past. We lunched there, in a location similar to the Coral Reef (yet with mostly sharks). The food was "good", but not on par with most WDW restaurants. For dinner, (LATE), we stopped by the Outback Restaurant in the Wyndham resort. Table 38, w/Rashid. It was, as always, phenomenal. The gator chowder and app are the two items my DH yearns for all year. The steaks are incredible, as is the lobster.

ladyjayhawk~as most here already know, we have visited nearly every resort on property (w/exception of the AK lodge). Yet, we choose the Swan/Dolphin over all of these. There are too many reasons to list...but mainly:

1. SPG program
2. 24-hour POOL
3. LATE check-out
4. Incredible service
5. heavenly accomodations
6. conveniently located
7. fine restaurants
8. regular associates (10+years for most)
9. 20% discount on food w/Disney Club
10. Overall...BEST BANG for your BUCK!

The differences between the resorts are subtle, but include:

1. Swan has Queens/Dolphin has Doubles (Beds)
2. Swan has exterior "Hollywood Bath"
3. Dolphin Jr. suite is 2-rooms, vs. Swan "efficiency" type (1-room)
4. Dolphin is larger, more whimsical/Swan is more refined-quaint
5. Both are "sisters" and share all privs (including charging).
6. Swan has THABO and MAMA T in the CL lounge. Occasionally, they grace the Dolphin (which are my FAV days!).

I hope you have a wonderful time, no matter WHERE in the WORLD you decide to stay! ;)

Mouseteacher~Awesome pic! I love returning each eve to the weather card, T.V. tuned to the Starwood or Disney channel, lights on...and the "chocolates"! My favorite "touches" of these fine resorts.

Debbie7452~Grocery store ALONE! Yes, I recall when the concept of that was FRESH & NEW! Almost seemed "odd", in a wierd sense. Yet, I quickly grew accustomed to the idea. Now, with DD nearly driving on her own, I'll soon be able to ASK her to "run to the store" for me! Ahhh...such are the things which define our lives (and age!).

Disbug...Thank you, for the nice compliment...and for contributing SO much here yourself. What a GREAT idea for anyone with younger children. You are indeed very creative and innovative. Your DD need not know you are "winging" it. She only needs to FEEL the amount of LOVE which goes into such planning and preparation (which I'm sure she does!). Kudos to you, for being such a nurturing & caring mom. Happy B.D. to your DD...may she enjoy the camp-out and time with her friends. My DD's B.D. is tomorrow. She turns Sweet 16. Where....oh WHERE...has the time gone?

TinkOhio... HELLO! Glad to read the power is all restored in your neck of the woods. I've got friends residing in Akron...and wondered how they fared in the midst of this crisis. Happy to read your post...and hope you "stop by" more often! ^_^

Mom Poppins...THANKS for all the info on the tickets, etc. Since we have friends planning a week (overlapping our stay) next summer, we were looking for the best prices for tickets. I emailed Rosa, and she told me as soon as the prices are available for next summer, she'll let me know. The deals are the best, especially with the breakfast. As for Connections, I loved using them during our last visit. I passed this option on our current sojourn, (too busy...forgot about this one!). Does L. Vernon offer these through her site? I LOVE getting all this info from you! Thanks for making my planning/life THAT much easier. Take care, and hug/kiss baby Kirk for moi. XO

TTFN....DF99

Muffy - I meant double; spellcheck didn't work for me (yeah - that's it.)

I love all the pics. Thanks to everyone who has posted them. And, I believe I am now tapping the single digit dance :D I have so much going on in the next week.........the time will fly. I probably won't really begin to pack until early next week. Yikes!

Luckily, my daughter packs for herself and my son is pretty easy.......shorts, shirts and a bathing suit! I'm the one who has to remember all of those little things!

Muffy~ :) :D :D a meet at the S/D summer 2004!!!!! Hmmmmmmmmmmm.... let's keep talking... errr... posting about it - it just might be a dream come true! Wouldn't it be loverly, as Eliza Doolittle sang. ;)

YES Mouseteacher! Let's keep talking/posting about it! Those are exactly my thoughts! It would be VERY lovely! It would be PERFECT!

Muffy

*waving from the lurking zone!* No time to post much, but I am giggling at the thought of all of us set free at the swan/dolphin! It would be a riot!

Time is fleeting, and supposedly there are only 24 hours in each day. Maybe Mouseteacher with her principal Catholic school powers can work on extending the day? LOL I wanted to say hello to everyone and know I was thinking about you all! Keep the pictures and posts coming! I love reading them!

Off to football, or is it hockey? or was it the grocery store for dinner?

Debbie

 ROFLOL - hockeymom - Oh, how I wish some special power (s)came with my job description! :D The crazy things that do go with my job that I never thought were part of being a principal - I just spent the day at our Superintendent's office in a planning team meeting for the NCEA (National Catholic Educators Association) convention that is coming to Boston in April and hosted by the Archdiocese of Boston. I am co-chairing the volunteer personnel committee - a cast of hundreds I'm told! Now isn't this a stretch from being in educational administration to convention planning??!! Haven't a clue how I'm going to pull this one off!!

What a great image you painted - "the thought of all of us set free at the Swan/Dolphin"!

;)

Hello all! Great to hear from Dreamflight again, especially with so much new information!

I know everyone is starting to get "busy" with the new school year, but hope to keep in touch at least daily. I am in the middle of planning tent lay-outs for our backyard birthday campout and scheduling all the tasks which can be done before hand.I found some cool flashlights at the Dollar Store. We're going to pot some flowers in peat pots as one of our crafts. Trying to keep busy and not think about how much I miss the S/D!;)

Yes, a meet is in order. We must keep that thought alive. I know I am probably the most flexible since I live the closest! DF has the inside information, being the most experienced traveller.... and Mouseteacher will keep us straight by reminding us that "WE ARE the adults here!" I can see it now.. Late night "Sequence" marathons, pajama runs down the halls for "more ice"! Someone knocking on the door asking, "Are you done with the blender?"(Is this what you envisioned by "being set free", #1hockeymom??) LOL! I can see the S/D being turned into one big "sorrority house"!!

(Okay, Mouseteacher! Put your Scooby Doo slippers on and you can run out for the next bucket of ice!!) :p

Back from my spur of the moment trip and have started my reports if you would like to take a look. (even though we stayed at POR;) )

If the link doesn't work, you can look for the firstmickey reports.

I have alot of pages to catch up with on this thread.
I think I am definitely staying at the Dolphin for my next trip. I enjoy the moderates but would really like to stay on the boardwalk and you all have me so excited! And I would love a summer meet too.

thanks,
Donna

:) *LOL* :) That is EXACTLY what I was thinking, along with the fact that we probably all own disney night shirts... own bunny slippers.. and are proud of it! The ice machine area will never be the same! *I wonder if they make cordless blenders?.... and what if we make mickey margarita pops? Is the freezer cold enough?* LOL Can you imagine a bunch of teachers and their friends, who all love disney, being set loose as a group? We might want to warn the S/D ahead of time! Thanks for the laughs, girls!

Mouseteacher>> Good luck to you! It does sound like a very nice event, though. Much nicer than the coffee/donut inservice at the local ISD!

Disbug>> I am in awe of what you are creating for that party! My only themed parties have been hockey parties. I can do those! Honestly though... writing down "wear a jersey and bring your gear" is about as far as the theming goes! Hockey games in the driveway with the kids...euchre in the living room with the adults. I think I need to "branch" out! (love the pinecones in the bag idea!) Happy birthday to your daughter!

Marymrg>> Have a great trip!

Ladyjayhawk>> You can't go wrong either way.. flip a coin?

DF>> Happy early birthday to your daughter! Here are some antacids for those first car trips she takes alone! I have my own private collection of assorted brands!

Firstmickey>> thank you for the link! Heading there next!
*waving to the rest of the room*

(not responsible for bad grammar... I need to get to bed!)
Debbie

Just wanted to make sure I was on the right track, Debbie!

Mouseteacher... if I start suffering from "planning withdrawal" can I come help with your convention??:p

Baby is bathed and having her last bottle, courtesy of DH. DD14 watching a little TV before bed and DD8 volunteered to go to bed early! Woh! I have a minute to myself.... think I'll go put on my Disney night shirt and bunny slippers!

Have a happy night all... peter pan dreams!

MEET?! Summer 2004? Sounds GREAT to me! ^_^
