Who here has never watched Harry Potter, never read one of the books, or knows nothing about the Harry Potter universe?

FB Series? Is there a part of the HP universe I have somehow missed? I didn't think that was possible.
No idea. Never heard of Fantastic Beasts or Newt Scamander or how somehow he got roped in to helping Dumbledore fight Grindlewald (played by three different actors) with cute animals. No idea what you are talking about. Kind of like how my wife doesn't believe Solo: A Star Wars Story exists 🤣

Speaking of Grindewald, can we bring back Johnny Depp for the next one? I was not a fan of this last one.

I have no idea about anything Star Wars except for Jar Jar Binks and apparently everyone hated him, but I thought he was hilarious. I've seen a few of the newer movies, but I think since I've not seen the originals, some of it is lost on me.

To be fair, that Cho Chang fact really does bother HP fans because it affects his relationship with the character for the rest of the series in the books. There was no reason whatsoever for the movies to get that wrong.
agreed. That never made sense to me. I really thought for the most part that the movies were well done. Considering the length of the books, stuff had to be left out, but I thought they stayed pretty true to the story, so this was just odd.

Me!

I think maybe Fantastic Beasts is related? I went to see this movie (I think that's what it was called) with my ex when visiting his family so I had no choice in the matter and I don't really remember anything from it, but that is my only experience with Harry Potter, if that.

I didn't even know about Harry Potter when it started becoming a popular thing until I saw one of the first Harry Potter books in Marshall's and I read the first two chapters in their entirety and it was such a neat series and then Marshall's had the other Harry Potter book and I read the first chapter and it was a great book. I also have a Harry Potter purse that glowed in the dark which I still have even though the glowing feature faded. But even though I perferred the Narnia series I recently regained an interest in Harry Potter books because in addition to horse books I also started to like fantasy novels too and I want to get more Harry Potter books because I only have the first one. And for Christmas I got the entire Harry Potter movie collection

I think it’s pretty easy to be out of the loop if it’s something you aren’t interested in. I tried, but it wasn’t my thing. Others may be totally ignorant about things I find fascinating.

Never read any of the books, no interest in wizards or whatever they are supposedly about. One of the cable channels has been showing some of the movies and tried to watch a bit of them. Gave up and really have no interest in the series. Are they coming out with a new movie sequel? Reminds me of the Star Wars series where they keep cranking out new movies to make more $$$.

First, welcome to the Disboards.:welcome:
Second, FB is a prequel series that takes place 70 years before HP. There’s 5 movies total (of which, 3 have been filmed so far). Most HP fans only care about movie 5 since that is where most early HP relatable material will be the most present (D vs G for HP fans). The series starts in 1923 and will end in 1945. FB is in theory basically magic for adults. However, JKR wrote part of these movies instead of using a book format first and that has hurt some of the writing material in my opinion. HP is fun for adults once you watch HP 3.

I’ll say it this way, HP fans just want FB 5 (this will be equivalent to Rogue 1). FB 1-4 offer some new characters and information about the universe (the biggest being about the 11 secret schools) but nothing more than a cash grab. FB 5 will have the famous scene we have all been waiting for (and will get the same reaction to that R1 Vader scene). After FB 5 is done, I’m sure the Marauder series will be written so Universal/Warner Brothers will milk the series for a 3rd time.

How fun will that be?!?!
They can milk it all they want - I'll still be having fun with all of it.

From what I just read, it looks like FB is done - no 4th and 5th movie. It's a shame - I thought they were great!

We saw the first Harry Potter movie and enjoyed it, but haven't seen or read anything since. Our granddaughter eats it up, though, so it's a good thing we got the basic jist of the series. Now - James Bond movies - haven't seen any of those.

I don't watch television or movies and I also don't enjoy reading fiction books. It's not something I would have been exposed to growing up and the same holds true in my adult life. It's just not something I'm interested in at all.
Just out of curiosity since you often mention your rough start in life and your Mennonite upbringing.
Do you watch Disney movies and go to the theme parks? Of what is the Disney spark that brought you here.

Just an fyi, adults may enjoy the FB series more because it deals with more adult things from the get go. I will say this, 90 percent of adults that have never seen a single movie or read the books that I have talked to personally and gave it chance seemed to enjoy them even if they were not into magic. If you think you are to old for the series, the truth is every age become a fan of HP. I would say that if you know nothing on the series but may want to give it a chance, I would recommend two things. First watch movies 1-3. The first two are childish but the third is when it becomes dark and number becomes really adult like. 5-8 is not meant for kids. It’s not all fantasy and some things take place in our world (watch the first one to understand the term muggle). The books have much more in them than the movies but the movies do the books justice. Secondly, if you go to the website:

https://my.wizardingworld.com/login

You can be sorted, learn your wand type (which can help before you go to the WWHP in FL or CA), and learn your patronus (but do the patronus test after you watch movie 3). It won’t spoil much if you do the three tests before you watch the first movie but it might confuse you until you do.

If you are on the fence about watching them in the future, here is the trailer for movie one:

I have to agree there is something “Simpsons” like about it. Kids and adults can draw a completely different interpretation from reading/watching. I started the series as a adult I believe I was in my early 20s when they came out when the final book came out I remember reading it through in a day or two. But I’m also a Star Wars fan and there are some similarities. When my son had his tonsils taken out I staxed the 4- 5 days in the hospital ( standard thing here in German it’s not OP here.) with him since he was so little. I was wondering what I’m gonna do there for those days and so I decided to reread And binged all books through. That was actually cool because I don’t know when I”ll have in my life such a downtime like that again where reading is really the only option.(this was just before smart phones.)

For anyone who is considering getting into this universe I highly recommend doing the books 1st. You have the luxury nowadays of reading, one book, watching that movie reading the next book watching that movie. Most of us had to wait with patients for each movie to come out.

No, I don’t know if she wrote the books with this in mind, but the first book is a significant lower reading level than the last. An adult fast reader could probably finish the first book in a few hours. The last one was significantly longer to read, both in length and content

I was planning a trip down to Florida to visit the theme parks back in 2019/2020 when I joined. Those plans never happened because of all the Covid closures but I've hung around as I enjoy some of the social aspects of the site. I still hope to make it there one day but I'm not sure if it will ever happen now. It doesn't have the same luster for me as it did before.

I would have included it in a trip down to tour the Everglades and other nature areas in Florida. Disney World would have only been a small part of the entire trip I'd planned.

My sister has never read a Potter book, only has seen clips of the movies from channel flipping. Only character she knows is Crookshanks. Made us play Harry Potter deck on Heads Up which she didn’t know most of clues .

Thanks for answering!

Me. I’m an avid reader but this is not a genre I’m interested in. I have some family members and friends who live for the whole Potter universe. My POV, this is why I’m glad there are so many options. I can read and watch what I want. So can everyone else.
