Robmax-

My Dad couldn't reach me sleeping back in the well behind the back seat! Sometimes, though, they would let me sit in the front between the two adults-the front of my Dad's Chrysler 300 had a bench seat. Ah, those pre-airbag days!

Zookeeper-

YES, YES! There is still Norman the Doorman! My DD loved him and my teenager thought he was kinda creepy. After all, he appears on the TV and talks to you....and no one else can see him!

Same reaction in my family - DD (9 at time) loved him. DS (18 yrs) thought he was WEIRD. I personally thought he was kind of cute!!

Mitla ~ I think I do remember Parrot Jungle along with family outings (a cast of many aunts, uncles and cousins!) to cruise Collins Ave to gaze at the awesome hotels we could never afford to have stayed at, Hallendale Beach, Ft. Lauderdale beach and so much more. Simple times, simple pleasures!

I remember my dad's cool white Chevy Impala with a red stripe across the side going up the "fin" in the back! This was our means of transportation for many summer trips to No. Miami Beach. It took 3 days to get there. WOW - how old do I sound.

The Swan and Dolphin statues atop each resort are an awesome sight when seen from a distance. It is kind of eerie but cool.

Ditto on those great pics! It makes me homesick for S/D!!:(

Mouseteacher ~
Special ** Pixie Dust ** headed your way for a quick recovery with your foot . . . OUCH!!

Just returned from three nights at the Dolphin. It was great! We had room 6029 with a balcony that overlooked the Boardwalk and Epcot. We made a point of getting back early enough one night so we could watch the fireworks. Although I had requested the west wing, I'm glad they gave me the east wing. And unfortunately, they weren't able to give me the comp rollaway (due to the discounted priceline rate I got), but I also was not charged the extra adult fee - they didn't even ask how many people were staying in the room. I didn't even attempt to argue off the resort fee, just enjoyed my morning cup of coffee and perusing the paper. The elevators were always RIGHT THERE and ever so quick. And there was in ice machine just three doors away. (as opposed to BWV where we walked three hallway lengths to get ice and the elevator was even further!) I'm not sure I can ever get DH to stay anywhere else! We have Frequent flyer tickets to burn before November. Hopefully we can fit the Dolphin into the budget. They gave us late check out (until 1PM) for no fee.

My only question is (and I asked this in a separate thread) how do you all tip bellhops and valet? We would usually tip the valet $3-5 everytime they brought the car, and we tipped the bellhop $10 to bring luggage up, but when we checked out the bellhop took it from room to sidewalk and the valet loaded it into the car. I was so confused (DH had handled tipping on the way in) Why don't they let the bellhops handle the luggage (from car to room and visa versa) and the valet handle the vehicle? I ended up giving the bellhop $6 and the valet $6. (we had 4 suitcases, a duffle, 1 backback and 4-6 bags full of souveneirs (lol)!

So glad to read your post on your Dolphin trip! I am VERY familiar with the location of your room (6029), as we've stayed in 5019 and 6021. These balcony rooms are GREAT! The view, unobstructed, is fabulous. So happy to read you were able to view the illuminations from your balcony/room on one occasion. It is truly something to SEE! ;) I too, enjoy all the perks of the resort fee, paper/coffee/phone/health club, etc. It's nice to read the paper and keep apprised of the "outside" world. I LOVE the Dolphin Elevators...as these are the FASTEST we have ever enjoyed. They are, as you wrote: "always RIGHT THERE and ever so quick." The "Matisse" paintings inside the elevator walls are very relaxing, and some of my favorite! :) The ice machines are located EVERYWHERE on this property, and at every hall. Sure hope you are able to return soon.

TIPPING:

*As for the valet: Industry standard is anywhere from $2-3 (more..if you desire) for Valet p/u. Usually, you do not tip Valet when you Drop-off your vehicle, and it is not expected. This is where most persons seem confused.

*The bellman/Valet at the Swan/Dolphin are two separate departments, therefore...they are quite territorial. (LOL). This is true, as the valet brings the unloaded luggage to the bellman, and they transport it to your room. This is done at MANY fine resorts/properties. Again, you do NOT have to tip Valet while dropping off your vehicle, or merely unloading bags onto a trolly cart, then rolling it through the doors to the Bellman station. I usually give the valet something, (minimum bag handling & extra for vehicle check-in/out) as this procedure occurs when checking in/out. Yet, it is not near the amount the Bellman receives for bringing the bags to our room, unloading them "where" we desire, getting us ice, and answering any/all questions we may have--or packing them neatly onto the cart and escorting us to the vehicle during our exit. The industry standard for this is $1 per bag handled, more if you desire. You should have tipped the bellman approx. $5-6 (you actually could have given Valet $5 and Bellman $5, instead of $10 to the bellman alone) when you checked in. You tipped accordingly during your exit ($6-bellman, $6-Valet), as both handled bags and both assisted you in your departure.

Many persons are confused by the tipping of these service persons. Having had friends/family work in this industry, I'm well aware of what is "expected". Since we enjoy the services of these persons VERY much, I always earmark enough $$ prior to vacationing for such purpose. Sometimes, I exceed the average (if the person exceeds our expectations, etc.). Most of the time, I tip within the industry standard expected. I enjoy tipping for these services, and appreciate the lessons our DD learns from this process.

It is nice of you to ask, and be concerned. I have watched SO many persons just hop into their car, and take off w/o tipping. I'm also aware they use the bell services w/o tipping. I've stood behind them at the airport, and watched as they gave their bags to the baggage handlers...CURBSIDE...w/o tipping. Yet, I'm the kind of person whom tips at the carwash every week, after having my car "handwashed", using my already costly annual VIP card. I'm always amazed at the number of persons whom do NOT tip.

I know these services do not require a "mandatory" gratuity, so many persons do not feel obligated. Expecially, since the resort already charges a FEE for Valet, etc. Yet, if you are going to take advantage of these wonderful conveniences, I would urge each of you to bring along the extra $$, and tip accordingly. Otherwise, there are the other options available...like self-parking, and dragging your own bags to your room. :p

Regarding Valet Parking - do you have to use it? Is there self-parking available at the Dolphin? Frankly, I don't like other people driving my car.

While on subject of tipping - I assume you tip housekeeping at the Dolphin, like you do at other WDW resorts? I usually leave about $4/day. Is this about right for the Dolphin?

LOL...We use a rental while in Fla, but after seeing the 48 hours program, I too am hesitant about Valet taking our personal vehicle. They rifted through the center console and glove compartment, even reached into the back seat and behind the seats (netting, etc.). They took whatever they found to be desirable. I'm not saying this will occur at WDW, but it was an unsettling broadcast. Just remember to remove any/all valuables before handing over the keys.

*And YES, Wolfpackfan!~There is GREAT self-parking at the Dolphin. Very easy, and accessible to the resort. The closest to the resort is the parking lot just past the Valet/Main entrance. When you enter this area, make the first "right", and then a sharp left...follow it all the way to the top, just across from the convention entrance. Then, walk up the stairs, inside and bear right. Voila~you're there!

YES...certainly, by all means TIP housekeeping. It is such a nice gesture, and greatly appreciated. $4 per day is Fabulous! There are three in our party, so I tip between $4-6 per day (depending on the daily situation/needs). We are very "tidy", and clean the room constantly while there. I'm one of those persons whom "makes the bed" each day, DD follows suit! LOL.

Housekeeping is aware of this, and they still strip it every couple days to replace the linens. I place all the towels in the tub each day in a neat pile. I also place all the refuse neatly beside the trash cans, (If there is extra, boxes, etc.). I tip at the end of the stay, yet we are there for 5 weeks or more. I have the same housekeepers, (evening shift) and tip the day staff separately for any needs/use. There are two housekeepers whom clean our suite, and they have both been there more than 10 years. We have a long-standing relationship with them...and DD always brings them special treats to bring home and share with their familes. They are warm, happy and wonderful! They add the MAGIC to our Dolphin Stay.
;)

I love it. Whenever on vacation, I always kind of tidy up the room before we leave in the mornings - pull the covers up, pickup stuff, etc. My wife and DD always give me a hard time about doing this; saying things like that is what the housekeeper is supposed to do, etc. I tell them I just don't want the housekeeper to think badly of us :D . Glad to hear I'm not the only one that does this.

LOL...WolfpackFan...glad to read I have good company! I have "always" done this, and recall watching my DM make the beds in all the resorts we visited (and tidy the room too~;) ). I too, feel the condition of the room you are using is a "direct reflection" of the inhabitants/occupants. I'm aware the housekeeping feels the same, as the Travel channel recently aired a special on Vegas Hotels. One of the housekeeping supervisors referred to a guest as a "slob" based upon the messy condition of his room. We "see" the housekeepers, and we are aware they share info/gossip with one another. I, personally, prefer to give them nothing to talk about! This includes "behavior" as well. We have never caused a "ruckus" at any resort...yet have heard many neighbors shouting, banging, crying, and yelling. On two occasions, I have had to summon security. I was literally worried about the safety of the occupants. How terrible to vacation, and waste your time arguing and fighting. Senseless and futile. Vacations are for "relaxing and reducing" stress...not the opposite! Thanks for making me feel less lonely on this one! :p

Well, I don't make my own bed in the hotels...............but-I do make sure all garbage is in one area - all towels in one pile etc.

My umpteen years of waitressing has left me with the habit though of tidying the plates and table. Stack all with largest on bottom, all silverware lined up on top next to all garbage (preferably garbage is in a bowl so it doesn't spill), etc. I've bussed sooooo many tables - I know how to make it easier to clean up.

My ordering habits are the same too - Start with the meat, pause, temperature prepared, pause, potato (with all accomp such as butter/sour cream), pause, salad with dressing type, pause and beverage. Or breakfast - meat, pause, egg type, pause, toast type and beverage. I can still remember the waitress at the Waffle House in St Charles MO grinning at me and saying - You can always tell a waitress!

Count me in too! I like to keep a tidy hotel room. I don't make the beds but do pull the covers up toward the pillows, tidy shoes under the dresser, pile the dirty towels under the sink area, organize the toiletries so the housekeepers can clean around the sink/vanity, etc. It also makes the time we live in the room more organized and someone isn't saying - "I can't find...!" or "Where is...?" just as we are about to go out for the day and... of course we are anxious to get on our way out into the most magical place on earth!:p

Would the first floor be fine to request at the Swan? I don't care about the view higher up. Also are those rooms on the first floor redone yet?

O.k. Now that I'm trying to get as much information on the Swan as I can, I have been looking over the older Swan/Dolphin threads. My dh and I would like to know what are good rooms to request while at the Swan? We are Starwood Preferred members and with a 11 night stay will rack up some points. How does upgrading work and what type of room to request? I would love an upper floor overlooking the waterways and MGM or Epcot. I know someone hear knows exactly what to ask for!:D

I know it has been nearly a week sionce we returned - but here is our Dolphin report. We arrived from our timeshare about 2 pm - they did indeed upgrade us to CLub level on the 14th floor - using our Starwood points as i had requested 5 days in advance. BTW, it is 750 points per night for the upgrade - and we use the teacher discount. Had an awesome view of the Swan, Epcot, MGM - wow, it was wonderful!
DF, you are correct- the food and snacks at the Club lounge are great - and for breakfast they had a great selection of bagels, pastries of all kinds, rolls, muffins - at least 5 different cereals - three jiuces - bottled water - 2 coffees - tea - you name it- it appeared to be there. Left our mousekeeper envelopes each morning and when we asked for more oatmeal soap (which i love) they more than stocked the basket! WE had the king bed and sofa combo - and really loved it - always seem to.

Unfortunately, on the down side - valet parking lost our rental car on Sat night and on Sunday morning as we went to get it for our return to the airport - no car!!! Hubby was calm but i must admit i was nervous, wondering about our return trip. Valet looked everywhere - no car! So, they gave us a voucher for a limo to the airport, and off we went. Went to the National desk, told them what had happened - they wrote out a lost/stolen car report and now i was worried - a lot - because that meant we were liable even though valet had parked it. I called the Dolphin, talked to valet parking twice and told them they must go out to the lot and find it - this time i was determined ! After a half hour wait - needed to go through security - we were about to leave the National desk and the Dolphin called - the car had been found in their lot. It appears that the man who had parked it the previous evening had left the keys in it! Can't tell you what a relief it was!!!
I did call the Dolphin and faxed a copy of the National rental slip - although they (Dolphin) did provide the limo for us - we were charged that ridiculous full tank charge of $64.50. I have asked that they remit us this amount. Waiting to hear from them.
Wow, enough babbling... We did have a great vacation though - always have to see the bright side of things - and the Dolphin was as wonderful as ever. Caroline

So glad you had a wonderful time! But how stressful about the "misplacing" of the car. I know that I would have been like you and worried about what liability National would hold me to and not the Dolphin. I'm glad all turned out so well.

How about some reports of your visit to the parks?

You were upgraded to the CL rooms, for the 750 pt. per eve fee? AWESOME! Especially with all the reported discrepancies with this feature. Yes, I DO LOVE the lounge, and all the "fixin's" they provide. So glad to read you also received some "extra" oatmeal soap (yummy stuff!). ;)

Yet, I'm terribly sorry for the problems you encountered with the Valet department. To error is human, and such things can occur. Please, do not think for a moment you would be held responsible for the actions/faults of the "VALET" department associate. The resort and this department "especially" is heavily insured/bonded, in case such things occur. Since the car was safe and in your possession until VALET took the keys/car to park, they are the responsible party in case of theft, fire or other damage. Everyone using Valet should be aware of this. The report would be handled through the VALET/POLICE/NATIONAL directly. You would not be charged for anything, other than the rental. In the case of the gasoline, (highway robbery!), you should receive remuneration for the $64.50. Please, keep me apprised of this matter.

Thank you for taking the time to post the details. It's through the travels of one another, and the time and consideration of POSTING, that we all learn such valuable travel tips. Sharing ideas and experiences...a very common, yet powerful bond. :p
