New Disney Ships: News, Rumors, Speculation.....and Names!

The first new ship is supposed to be completed by the end of 2021? Seems like the building of the first ship would be starting soon.

Castaway Cay if Im not mistaken is a 99 year lease so its not going any where. As far as the new Island, from what I understand, the island is similar to some of the other lines private islands, where Disney will own a given amount of land, and the rest is local resorts, marinas etc. I thought I saw some where that Disney was willing to allow at least some of the property to be used by the locals, but I don't remember the details off hand, though I think I remember something about an Aulani style resort on the property.

The new island will remain largely nature driven, no Aulani style resort. There will be a local beach access to part of the lands. I suspect we won't see coral disruption like was done when they build the land pier at Castaway either. One link here. and the DCLBlog update HERE.

Depends on who you ask. Nothing has been said as far as a timeline, unless I missed it in the posts above.
With that said, traditionally, DCL ships debut In the early part of the year, Jan Feb or March. Meyer Werft will build the ships in roughly 18 months. So realistically, the only thing that would determine when the ship is built is, A when DCLs contract says for delivery AND when MW can start them in the line. In theory, if DCL sticks to the Jan/Feb/ March debut, first steel should be about August of this year. If they are truly planning on a Nov 21 debut,(Port Canaveral statement) then that would be roughly May of 20 for first steel.

Might have been someone on this board mentioning Aulani. I just remember seeing it somewhere.

It sounds somewhat different than Castaway.

It is, as it sounds like instead of concrete walkways, it would be an elevated walkway as anexample. As far as other looks or feel, look at Labadee Haiti as an example. Where part of the island is for the cruise guests and the rest is local.

So could this be more of an alternative to Nassau than Castaway? Where you could go off and explore the island plus have a Disney refuge as well?

Yes, CC is a lease and yes, DCL will own the Lighthouse Point area as private property open to Bahamian residents for their use.

With the piers at the south end of the point and a jetty pushing them out to deeper water, it wouldn't surprise me if the southern section of the Lighthouse Point (for lack of a DCL name) will be sectioned off for only cruisers, while the northern section would be 'mixed use'. That's all just supposition, though.

Too early to tell. Just ran some basic numbers. From the mouth of Port Canaveral to Light House Point, its roughly 388 miles. Running time at 20 knots that's a 19 hour run give or take. From Nassau to LHP, its only 120 miles or a 6 hour run at 20 knots. From Miami LHP is 263 miles give or take and about a 13 hour run. Not too far off the current run from CC to PC. I think its 240 some odd miles from PC to CC.

From what I just saw, the extreme southern end of the island will not be touched. Initial plans are to develop 20% with some acreage given back to the Bahamas for protection, and also the salt pools are supposed to not be touched. I think the total acreage is only 700 some odd acres. Maybe not quite 800.

So you couldn't finish off at LHP and make it back to PC by morning like you can with CC.

You could. It would either require them to leave a little earlier from LHP or arrive a little later. I suspect that arriving much later throws a wrench into buffers they allow to perform maintenance or with deliveries while at Canaveral. But you could easily work Nassau, LHP, day at sea. Or Nassau, LHP, Castaway . Or some similar combination. But I don't think you'' see PC to LHP due to the late departure from Canaveral.

True; the DCL ships, while pretty, don't go much more than 23-25 knots. On a good day :)

We disembarked in Dover, which is very close to Southhampton so I must be missing something in terms of why S would be a better port. We loved sailing in, seeing the white cliffs, looking at France across the channel, and the other things we toured in the Dover area.

Southampton is a much, much larger deeper port than Dover. It is also historically along with Liverpool one of the great passenger ship ports in europe along with Hamburg

Probably not. I would imagine it would be for the NY and Miami cruises Possible 1 off cruises like 2 island stops or transatlantic.

Out of curiosity, how are they different?

My husband works in the cruise industry, and spends a lot of time working on projects in Asia. The Asian clientele have very high expectations when it comes to both spas and casinos. With that being said, I still think true Disney fans would love to sail with Disney even without a casino. I’m hopeful that the spas on the new ships will be spectacular.

Iger confirmed the new island. I’m assuming they are keeping Castaway Cay. So which boats will go where? And could a double dip mean both islands?

That would be very cool -- being able to visit both islands on one itinerary.

And hopefully more private spa rooms for couples with private jacuzzis;)
