New Disney Ships: News, Rumors, Speculation.....and Names!

I think it failed because it was built for only Chinese to enjoy. I think if Disney still made the ship appeal to Americans and it just was sailing over there it would do well. The Joy was made completely different from how American's like to sail, which is why they are gutting it now. If they had designed it like the Bliss and encouraged others to sail it besides the Chinese I don't think they would have had this problem.
I’m curious - what was different about it?

I don’t see it happening. Norwegian built a brand new amazing ship, Joy, for the Chinese market, less than 2 years ago. It has failed miserably and they are doing a $50,000,000 renovation on her to get her re-Americanized so they can bring her to Alaska to join her sister, Bliss. I would think seeing that would really make Disney think twice about it.

Or maybe it's the NCL brand ;) They're not known for great service of late. A decade ago or so they had three ships in Hawaii and had to refurbish two and bring them to the U.S. because their sales were so bad. And the one they left that we sailed on (Pride of America) spoke volumes about why the other two ships didn't succeed. Just saying....:scratchin

I know that Princess has several cruises around Asia every year and they are always sold out. And I would hope the Disney brand would succeed just on the name and popularity alone. Here's hoping!

The pool area, it was mostly a grass park I think instead of lounge chairs around multiple pools. I think the Chinese don't prefer swimming on cruises or laying in the sun so usually ships made for that market make it very small or nonexistent. They also are really big into gambling so they had a two story casino with a special area for high rollers. The restaurants on the ship were geared towards what they like, I believe they are all being switched out as well. The rooms were designed for large families that are traveling together so there aren't any solo cabins and the structure of design is just different.

The problem there is that the 2 cultures are going to have differing views on what they enjoy or appeals to them. Tobacco use is still huge in Asia and not so much over here anymore so limited smoking areas won't work for one but unlimited won't work for the other. Casinos tend to appeal to both and would help get butts in beds but DCL has decided to hold themselves to a different standard by not having casinos. Many people prefer it that way, although many also don't. Signage, crew, food and design would also have to be very carefully balanced.

Other cruise lines send their ships that are not made for the Asian market over there for a few sailings before coming back over here for the remainder of the year. Maybe Disney will do something like that. Then it could hit up Australia along the way. I just think there is enough interest for them to keep the ships as is and not do anything to appeal to the Asian market and still fill the ships.

The point about gambling is a good one. Since Disney wouldn't have a casino on board that might reduce their appeal to the asian market. Of course DCL won't know until they try.

Exactly. I'm seeing Princess, Viking, and Celebrity ships that spend a small part of their year in Asia and Australia. They seem to be doing fine. Princess isn't exactly a new cruise line. IMHO DCL doesn't need to change a ship if they just send it there for a few special cruises.

I think we could see 3-4 speciality Asian cruises along with a few speciality Australian cruises. That said the cost of any speciality cruise is insane and I hate to think what Disney will charge for these more exotic sailings.

This on opening day :surfweb:, followed by this :faint:

I understand it is all a guessing game but... Any thoughts on when the next morsel of information about the new ships will be showing up:3dglasses

Probably not until the first steel is cut or the keel laid, which will probably not be until sometime in late 2019 or early 2020. Earliest I would guess would be next year's D23 Expo.

Agreed. Also, keep an eye on the webcam site I have listed on page one as once they start the construction, they usually start releasing a lot more design info and stats.

Bringing the family suites idea that was kicked around on the 7A Wonder thread and Scott’s Blog here. Think we’ll see any new room designs with the new ships?

Since the Dream and Fantasy have come out the industry has really been playing around with things like Haven suite areas, single cruiser studios, and has anyone checked out RCCLs family suites (they are NUTS)? Make sure you scroll through all the pictures.

So we’ve talked names, character art, restaurants, any new ideas for cabins??

Smoking and gambling as a cultural trait is a stereotypical - and honestly unnecessary - assessment. Plenty of Asian families travel on DCL's Alaskan itineraries, and no, they don't all smoke or gamble.

Already three parks in Asia, full with Disney characters and movie references, overflowing with visitors. Disney can be many things - pricey, sprawling, extravagant, sometimes synthetic - but what it cannot be is culturally ... limited.

Lower priced family staterooms? Wonder and Magic have only the family verandahs. Dream and Fantasy have debuted the family oceanview. Maybe a family inside on the cards?

I do like the family oceanview rooms on Dream and Fantasy, but you're right -- why has no one come out with a family inside room? And with those virtual windows, it would be a win-win. Maybe they could put in rooms like other lines have done with virtual verandah windows, but not at verandah prices!

Wow! That is nuts. I can't imagine how much something like that would cost on DCL.

My grandkids would flip for those rooms!
