New Contract vs. Add on

My husband and I have 220 points at SSR with a Feb use year. My parents are now thinking that they would like to get in on the magic too since we often travel together to WDW. We are trying to figure out whether we should just do an add on that they would actually pay for or if they should get their own contract. We are trying to think of all of the pros and cons of both situations. I know that if they did their own then they would have to purchase the 150 minimum and if they were to add on to ours then they would not really be "members" and would not be entitled to any of the perks, but we are trying to see if there would be any other major differences. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? If so, what did you do? As always, thanks for the help!

You have the thinking correct however, there are other options. You could change your contract to add their names then do the add on and get all the perks plus benefits of having all points under one roof AND have the option of a smaller add on size. OR you could do the add on less than 150 pts and then change the title to add their names or even take yours off if you wanted. There are advantages and disadvantages to all these options of course. You could even do a combo where you say added 75 pts but say one 50 & one 25 pt contract to your membership. Then transfer the ownership of the 25 pt contract to them so they get the perks. Then you could transfer those pts back to your membership every year and have them all under one roof to use. The variations are almost endless.

Dean have they changed the rules.

I wanted to add my brother to my add on and was sold no - the whole thing or nothing.

if your parents aren't members and don't live with you - then they can't get the annual pass discounts (which is the best of member perks, my opinion)

No rule change. However there is nothing to keep you from doing the add on THEN changing the deed and registration. It would then become a totally separate contract. ASAMOF, I'm looking at doing an add on, in part, for this very reason. I'd add my two (now) adult children to the samll add on and possisbly my sister and brother as well. That way they'd have access to the system and perks without putting my larger contracts at risk. You've likely seen me say I'm thinking about selling most of the points I have now otherwise but that's a different discussion.

Don't you have to get past ROFR to make changes like that to the deed and registration?

Technically you need to get the paperwork but it is automatic in this situation unless there is money changing hands. The answer in this case is you need to get a piece of paper but you have no risk.
