Could they be at it again? I read in the paper the other day that Disney is planning a live-action musical film of "Beauty And The Beast" for theatrical release. Why am I not surprised?

"Beauty And The Beast" to me is one of those all-time Disney Classics that should be left alone! Quite frankly, I am getting sick and tired of the Company milking these movies for all that they are worth. When will we all do an about face and let them know that we are tired of them re-spinning or re-hashing these movies.

This movie would be based on the Broadway musical version of B&B. While I have not seen the broadway version, but will someday, I strongly disagree with another movie based on the original. "Enchanted Christmas" was a dud, the B&B TV programs were not successful either. You have a live B&B show at MGM and the broadway show is still on tour. And of course the DVD was just released. I saw the IMAX version of the movie and found it to be very enjoyable. But the buck has to stop somewhere.

Disney needs to get back to basics and find some new and original product. Worse than the new B&B movie would be these rediculous movies based on Theme Park attractions. Consider the flop that was the "Country Bears." And a Pirates and Haunted Mansion movies coming up? Puhleeezzzee!

I've got a couple of ideas. How about "Monorail-The Movie". Or maybe a musical based on the song "Chim Chim Cheree" only featuring theme park custodians singing and dancing as they sweep up trash throughout the parks.

:o

And then we could have an animated feature based on the live-action HM movie, based on the HM attraction.

:rolleyes:

Better yet, bring back the old nature series they used to run during "Wonderful World of Disney" (the name escapes me), and base it on the various species of park visitors:

* the ankle-chafing stroller pusher
* the Brazilian tour group
* breastfeeders
* smokers that stray outside their designated habitat
* fathers that can't believe how much the vacation is costing, while the kids want to stay in the 89th plush shop of the day
* die-hard WDW fans that hurl epithets at DinoLand and Aladdin
* etc. etc.

Dad of 5, I thought I was going to escape your list, but then I saw this:

die-hard WDW fans that hurl epithets at DinoLand and Aladdin

I didn't think anyone saw me...

;)

But this doesn't bother me at all. I would hope it'll be a quality production and not just a cheap direct to video film, but even so if it's a flop or a piece of crap it's still no skin off my nose. But this particular story, with the success of the MGM show & Broadway screams for a move like this.

Also, note that this would be a bold move by Disney (IMO) as musicals aren't exactly the rage of Hollyweird these days...

Frankly, I see this as a risk, something I would think most of you current management bashers would applaud...Except that it's still coming from "he who shall not be named," isn't it? So it must be bad...:confused:
:cool: :cool: :bounce: :cool: :cool:

There's lots of ways to take risks. The Fonz jumping the shark comes to mind. That doesn't make it right for Disney...

That said, I think you're right that if they go through with this, it COULD be a quality piece of work.

I've just gotten beyond giving them the benefit of the doubt on most things.

Jumping the shark completely. Everytime they release a new version of a classic movie, direct to video. From a business point of view, it must be making Disney money. From a Disney fan's point of view, a travesty. Beauty and the Beast should have been left alone. Enchanted Christmas was a loser. And now they want to mess with it again???

Actually, doing a movie musical at the moment isn’t bold at all; it’s just simply the “in” thing to do in Hollywood right now. After the surprise success of ‘Moulin Rouge’ at the box office and the amazing success of ‘The Producers’ on Broadway, musicals are the next big thing according to conventional thinking. All of the major studios have a couple in pre-production right now. And Disney already has their version of ‘Chicago’ (Richard Gere sings again at last) coming out in a few weeks. The film was made after its successful revival on Broadway a couple years ago. Without those box office receipts to make it “safe”, no one at Disney would have had the boldness to proceed with the film. And the big six hundred pound gorillas (‘The Producers’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’) aren’t at Disney.

And making a live-action version of ‘Beauty’ is about as un-bold as Disney could possibly get. Wow, the film version of a smash Broadway touring company that was a stage version of a smash animated movie. Does that sound like they’re talking much of a chance on a new and original story? Hardly “bold” at all, simply just another way to continually recycle the existing brands rather than make any attempt on doing something new.

Nope – bland, safe, cheap, unimaginative, cost effective and risk-free decision making.

P.S. It’s really strange to hear “jumping the shark” being used by real people. Another insider term gone mainstream.

Are you sure it's going to be a live-action movie based on the musical?

Quite a few Broadway musicals have gotten pay-per-view treatment. They come into the theatre where the show is playing on B'way, film the show, give it a limited release with a national pay-per-view showing, and then sell a video and DVD.

www.jumptheshark.com is a pretty popular site nowadays.

So the animated movie was original story? Music was done by in-house staff?

Here's a brilliant idea!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Simply release the broadway version on video. No need to make a new movie. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite musical! I love it. It would be great to have that on video. I sure hope Disney is listening.

If this rumor is true it just shows that disney has lost most of its creative ability!!!
This is just a idiotic idea that comes from a company that has no vision!!!

Yeah the thought of making a broadway success into a movie to appeal to another demographic, what idiots. I mean, look at the track record, Grease sucked, West Side Story was crap, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, all tripe. You know, some people don't own the animated version of Beauty & the beast and some never will, same goes for the Broadway show. I'll never see it live, I might be interested in a live theatrical release at some point. Just because a cartoon was successful doesn't mean it is a bad idea to try it live too. I hear a lot on here about how unimaginative Disney is in regards to theatrical releases or TV productions but I have yet to see anything that remotely resembles better ideas. You do a great job of *****ing and moaning though.

Coming out with a live action Beauty and the Beast movie musical is a BRILLIANT Idea!!

Including a movie version of Hairspray, which is a Broadway musical based on a movie...

I think if a movie of the Broadway version is done well, it would be well-received and appeal to a broader audience than either the movie or the Broadway show alone has done. (Especially if Terrance Mann is brought back to reprise Beast!)
