Never put mascara on your lower eyelashes

I also don't mascara my bottom lashes BUT I have a reason lol. I was taught that for one it does make your under eye area appear darker but for me it makes eyes that are already small look even smaller instead of opening them up more. The eye dr said also that its better not to wear it but thats purely his opinion because it can get in your eyes easier. I don't know if thats true or not.

I had always heard that you don't put mascara on your lower lashes in order to make your eyes look bigger.

I'm 41...and I'm a mascara on the lower lash addict.

I think it depends on the individual. I put it on lightly but I guess because I have big eyes, I think the mascara enhances my eyes, not distract from them.

I HAVE to wear Mascara on my bottom lashes because I have White Eyelashes! :confused3 Especially on my left eye.

I just had a makeup application/lesson at a spa for my 40th birthday and guess what? They said no mascara on the bottom lashes! I don't know why...but they did use a soft brown eyeliner only 1/3 of the way in on the bottom lash line to sort of even out the look. :confused3

I had a person tell me this also..but you know what? I tried it and it looked stupid! Mascara on the top and not the bottom...I felt half dressed and my face looked worse than normal! LOL! BTW, I am 47 1/2.

I also went to cosmetology school and never heard of this before. Must be something new that the powers that be thought up.

I have dark circles under my eyes, so I don't really put anything along my lower lash line. Sometimes a little shadow as eyeliner at the outside corner, but that's it. But that's my preference. I say do whatever you want.

It is a long standing rule of thumb to not wear mascara on your lower lashes as it tends to make one look older. I remember reading articles stating various ways to look younger. Whenever I ignore the advice and put the mascara on my lower lashes, it does tend to get smudged and add darkness to an area that does not need it.
Some other ideas to look younger...

use only cream blush
don't put powder anything right below or next to your eyes (it will accentuate little creases.)
Blondes should wear only brown mascara (I'll use black brown for evenings out...but other than that...it is just too harsh.
A tight pony tail is an instant face lift.
Don't overdo the foundation
Don;t put eye liner on the lower part of your eyes (again the darkness and smudge factor.)
I am 40, but I have been following these pieces of advice for at least 10 years...

Wow..I never realizeded that I was doing everything wrong all these years! I wear powder blush, put powder under my eyes to seal the concealer. Not blonde so I don't break that rule. Never wear a tight pony tail..it would give me a headache. Never use foundation, only pressed powder. I use shadow as a liner on my lower lash line, usually a brown or a smoky blue. I am always being told that I look way younger than I am. Most people when I tell them I am almost 50 think I am lying to them.

I wear mascara if I feel like it, but I seldom do because I had both top and bottom lids permanently lined. I had no idea I would love this so much!! The shadow and mascara is used now only if I am "dressing up". For work, I just go with my powder foundation and a little powder blush. Had my lips permanently colored too, and I love it! What a time saver in the morning!

I'm really glad I never listen to anyone who tells me there are things that women over 40 shouldn't do.

I'm over 40 and still putting mascara on bottom lashes. I have never heard that you shouldn't.

I actually never wear mascara on my lower lashes.....I just feel funny with it on the lower lashes....like my eyelashes stick together!! I say do whatever you feel comfortable doing, that is the way to go, right? What ever makes you feel good! :sunny:

Nancy...
LOL!!
I am just passing along what I read.
To each his own.

I know...I was being kind of tongue in cheek! I really am just stuck in my ways...and I think I look really stupid with nothing on my lower lashes!

Are the permanent liners and lip colored tatoos???

That sounds painful!

I never heard that you weren't supposed to wear any mascara, I had heard you were supposed to wear brown mascara over 40.

I think it just has to do with having "lines" and bags as you get older and black mascara accentuates those "areas". I no longer use black mascara, just brown or black/brown, it is not as harsh looking. I changed to brown partly based on a makeup consultation at a dept store. I couldn't go without masacara on my lower lashes, but I put it on very lightly and sometimes on the outer lashes only, not the inner ones. Brown also makes the lashes look thicker and I think is a prettier color than black for me to wear.

JMHO :)

Nancy, I suppose it is like a tatoo. It was done by an RN who first applied numbing cream to my eyes/lips, then she gave me shots (in the eyelids and lips). Then she lined my eyes, and colored my lips. These were not done at the same time - actually a year apart. There was no pain because I was numb. I went for a second go-round six weeks later. I actually had the lips done 3 times to get the color I wanted. The color on both is supposed to last 8-10 years.
