DIS Dads Nemesis Challenge 2

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
 Jim! Jim! He's Our Man! If He Can't Do It, CJ Can! :cool1:

Awesome, Randall!

Bit the bullet and spent way more than I could have imagined on a pair of sneakers (so I guess training in my 10 year old nikes wasn't a good plan?) thank goodness for my wife who convinced me to use some of the kids Christmas money to buy a decent pair of new balances (with orthotics)

And you'll probably have to buy another pair later this year. But it's TOTALLY worth it to keep your legs injury free!

I like my Asics Gel Nimbus 14's but every foot is different and it is good to try on several different brands to see what works well for you.

good shoes are a must, unless you can learn to run barefooted!

wow I never realized how out of shape I was ( well I always thought I had a nice shape,Nice and round) .Last night I set up runkeeper. Seems to be a nice app I think a lot of us are using. So I figured I would get up early and start my couch to 5k !! Well this morning I woke up a little earlier then normal went to get out of bed and got thee worst charley horse I have ever had.So it seems I am going to have a real up hill battle to do this.My calf is still burning. So I had to hold off on starting again. The good news is I am down a pound and a half!!!! so at least my sit ups are working!!! Now if I can only put 1+1 together I will e in good shape.
I have talked to my partner Steve he has started his program also.

I downloaded the same app, and am starting the couch to 5k this weekend...

Up to now, just been treadmill running.

Plenty of hope... Keep it up.

For race day you will be wearing a t-shirt, and on the back it will say "Hi Doc", so he can read it. :thumbsup2

Chris... disregard this... clearly you will only read it for the first 10 seconds of the race, as that's the head start your giving him...

You're pushing yourself too hard! Slow in the beginning! Take a look at jeffgalloway.com. You should only be walking with brief runs at this stage. 1.53 is way too long! 1 mile is his long run at this stage.

I didnt run the entire way...it was a run/walk pace...the first .3 miles was a jog and the second .3 was a walk and then jog and mosly walk the rest...

My shins are pretty tender too. Hoping the new shoes, stretching better, and trying to land more on the balls of my feet helps!

Honestly, I think you need to take a day or 2 off in-between runs. There is no sense pushing yourself at the beginning, getting hurt, then getting discouraged. Take it slow.

You need to work a plan, take a couple days off and dont push too hard... also you might want to check your shoes....

the shoes will help, but dont over do it, same advice you might need to take a day or more off...

I'm confused...is "kids Christmas money" like money they from Grandma & Grandpa for Christmas...or money that your and DW have set aside to buy Christmas presents for the kids? Because taking from one seems a whole lot worse that raiding the other...

And you'll probably have to buy another pair later this year. But it's TOTALLY worth it to keep your legs injury free!
I've read that you should get 300-400 miles per pair of shoes. After I paid $100 for my initial pair at the Fleet Feet store, I bought my second pair online (overstock.com I think) for around $50.

Good luck this weekend Brian! That street running makes it seem real!
So does getting hit by a truck. I don't recommend it, though.

There's always hope. I'm not gonna lie - the first few runs are going to Suuuuuuck. Your body is not used to this kind of activity. It needs time to adapt from the state it's been in to the state you want it to be in. But like everyone else said - start slow. The Couch to 5K programs are mostly walking during the first week or so. I know you're anxious and excited to get running, but follow the plans. They're designed to prevent injuries.

Plenty of hope... Keep it up.
