DIS Dads Nemesis Challenge 2

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Ok I know it is early in the game here.BUT.. how many guys running next yr think they may be going solo or just with spouse??? The reason for this question is next yr maybe we cant get a few to share room again and grab us a tree house!!! the booking window for those will be here soon and they are hard to grab for that time frame. Just a thought!!!

I will likely try be coming with DW... no kids. At least right now (a year away) that is the plan..

Doc's question about having to run a 10k before the half, along with a conversation I had with another Dad via text last night, got me thinking. And that's never a good thing....

While I told Doc that you don't need to run any type of race before the half marathon, you really, really should. For one, 13.1 miles is a very lofty goal. Clearly it's an attainable goal (Look at Tim and I), but if you get off one of your early training runs having ran just a few minutes at a fairly slow pace and feeling like your legs or chest are about to explode it's quite easy to get into the mindset of "I'm never going to be able to run 13.1 miles!"

So go find a 5k in your area. Most registrations run about $25 and you get a sweet t-shirt and sometimes a goodie bag. http://www.runningintheusa.com/Race/Default.aspx is a good resource to find races, as are local running stores or local running clubs. A typical couch to 5k program is about 9 weeks long. So find a race that is around April or May. That will give you enough time to finish the training and give you a goal that is much closer and easier to attack. It will also give you an idea of what it feels like to go through packet pickup, get lined up for a race and compete with other runners. (Hint: it's a rush. Even if you come in last place, just being out there is an accomplishment)

Once you get that first 5k done, start working on longer distances. Another 5k, or 8k or 10k. I did 5 races from the time I started training last year to half in January. (5k,10k,5k,8k,15k). Each one gave me a tangible and reachable goal, all the while keeping me on track for the ultimate half marathon race. They're also a lot of fun - the Packers put on one where you got to run through Lambeau Field. Another raised money for the local Children's hospital. One race was just days before Halloween, so a ton of runners were in costume.

So don't get discouraged if you're not running as fast or as long as you want to be. Training takes time, but you've got a lot of time to go before January 11th.

So that WAS you on the other end of the text... have to say that's a bit of a relief (for both of us). ;)

Great advice... :thumbsup2

Just have to find some runs in Toronto.

If I run it again, (and I think I was just informed that I am) I'd try to stay at OKW again. We didn't realize it at the time, but the start is very close to the resort. So close, we could have walked there. That could have meant an extra hour of sleep and a place to poop that had plenty of toilet paper. Oh- did nobody mention the tp shortage yet?

You should keep a roll on your SPI belt. I try and avoid the porta potties in general.

My goal was to finish the goofy in under 6 hours. I wound up at 6:28 so I'll need to try again. I'm not sure if I'll get to this year or if I have to wait till 2015.

OK.....why is there a TP shortage and why would you want to keep some with you while you run....:scared1:

Ok...I am going to have to figure out some way to tracking distance and time better....I walked /jogged around a mile giv e or take...in aout 20 minutes give or take...I need to figure this out better.

So they ran out of tp in some of the porta potties. 25k people will do that. I was joking about carrying some with you.

Apps like runkeeper, nikeplus and wahoo fitness all do well if you have a smartphone and are running around outside. For about $50 you can get a nikeplus band and footpod to track distance it's less accurate than gps measurement but it will work. You can also get gps watches starting out at about $100

Whew!! I was worried there was something that I did not know about...I have issues about pooping in public places LOL:rotfl2:

Do the smart phone apps have GPS? Or do I really need to get one of the other things?

I'm sure it would be solo or with DW as we have a family trip in Nov.

Here's a tip: Offering to have your 19 year old daughter tape up old men for a fee is probably a place you don't want to go...:scared1:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Watch it, she has a shiv.

True story.

Did a mile in 13:45 today with 1 minute run to 2-2.5 minute walk ratio. Feel good (now, very hard during & immediately following)

Well done Chris! Keep it up!:cool1:

This should help you out.

Do the smart phone apps have GPS? Or do I really need to get one of the other things?

I use the free RunKeeper app (as do Tim, Justin and Ian at least). It works on iPhone, Android and Blackberry. It uses GPS to track your outside runs and lets you manually enter other workouts such as treadmill. Once you sign up on their site (or link it to your Facebook account), it posts your workouts for your friends to see, and they can see yours. It worked quite well for us - we could keep tabs on each other's progress.

Ummmm yea... I just found this thread. I can't keep up with 2 boards. :joker:

Yeah, hell no is right! I'd like to live through my first marathon weekend
I thought you just lived through your first marathon weekend last weekend? :scratchin

This almost makes me wish I had a nemesis.
DON!!!!!!

A little too soon to be thinking about another race.
Really? I've already been trying to find some races I can do once I can walk normal again. :rotfl2:

You'd be very surprised how much training you can get done in a year. 2014 is certainly doable, even for a non-runner. I give you examples A and B:

IMG_4853.JPG
I hate to say I agree with Barry but he speaks the truth. ::yes::

I just want to chime in and say that for any of you who think you can't do this, you can. One year ago I weighed 310 lbs. Through diet and exercise I lost 40 lbs in 2012. When I started my training in June I could barely run for 2 minutes. In September I did my first 5k. I then did 10k's in October and November. This past weekend I did the half in 2:47:07. This was about 17 minutes off my goal but I didn't factor in how much the crowds would slow me down at the beginning and I am still recovering from a sinus infection/cold that I think slowed me down a bit. I'll be back to do more halfs and hopefully eventually a full. Going to try and lose another 40-50 lbs this year and then I can be even more competitive!
You did an awesome job! I hope to shed about 30 minutes off my time for next year.

The choice between Barry and Tim was easy. This one will be tough. Between Chris and Steve? I may have to sit on the sideline.
What made the choice so easy? Inquiring minds want to know...

Hold on now.... Are those Canadian minutes or American?
:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Does it really matter who goes on Chris/Randalls team????As it stands now Steve and I will run circles around them.I mean lets face it team Tim whooped the crap out of Randall so He knows what he has coming from my team.
Besides ask Tim How I treat teammates!!!
Treats them might fine! Including renting them points at a discounted rate, tossing him bears while he is sitting so he doesn't have to get up, and give him a parting gift- 12 pack of Yuengling!

Ok two quick serious questions.

1) Is it bad to run outside in the winter??? I like the cold and would prefer to run outside. But I always see people saying the cold weather makes them run inside on treadmill. I would much rather run in the nice cold brisk air.
I prefer running outside. It was 27-35 in the mornings when I ran. Imagine the shock when it was 70 at 5:30am on Saturday morning.

2) How much do you think my wed nights shooting pool and drinking Yuenglings will affect my training.I don't really have to quit drinking do I ? Cutting back should be good enough right (please say yes) ?
Run Wed morning and take thursday off.

ok one more question.

Is it better to run in am or pm??
Some say its better in am cause it gives you a boost for the day.Others will say am cause you burn more fat cause you will be running on less calorie intake.then some say run at night cause you burn off what you just ate earlier. hen a lot just say run when it fits your schedule. What do you my fellow runners say?
I prefer to run in the am. I cannot run after eating. So evening runs are out for me. I can do 3 miles but I cramp very easy.

What if you haven't run a 10K? Can you still enter? Or do you have to have run a 10K before the half?
I see Barry answered you already but if you ever want to head to a run together, let me know. I'm going to be hitting some 5k, 10k and am thinking about the Hartford marathon (1/2) in October.

I agree with all of this. Plus running in a few races before the 1/2 will give you a feel of what happens before a race. You can run in a 5k with 1000 people. The Disney 1/2 had 25,000+ runners. You don't want to get overwhelmed.

If I run it again, (and I think I was just informed that I am) I'd try to stay at OKW again. We didn't realize it at the time, but the start is very close to the resort. We should just all rent points (or use your own points DVC members) and stay at OKW building 50. Sleep till 4 stretch in the room and walk to the start. We would arrive waaaaay before we arrived last weekend. :lmao:

That settles it. I think I'm going Goofy next year. If Joey frickin' Fatone can do the Goofy, so can I. For anyone interested, he did the half in 3:10:04 and the full in 6:19:02. For those of you who don't remember, he was part of N' Sync back in the day. Seems like a nice enough guy, but I never took him for an athlete. His times aren't good, but when I spoke to people who ran both races, I never asked them their times. I just said "Good Job!". Finishing both is impressive enough.
So you went from not running, to running, to doing the Goofy in like 5 minutes. :rotfl2::rotfl2: :rotfl2::rotfl2:

I told Crash on Saturday to bring some TP... she looked at me like I was crazy. :lmao::lmao:

I was thinking about OKW again too because of that, but I thought I remembered reading something that anyone caught walking from their resort could be turned back because there are no sidewalks or safe places to walk. Thinking about trying to get into BLT and just take the monorail from Contemp.
You could of crossed first, grabbed their attention, then let me, Chris, and his cousin cross. :lmao:

Heard on the Mickey Miles Podcast that you can't walk from OKW to the start line. Moats to cross and CMs turning people around. Guys that are running, you may want to subscribe to that podcast. Lots of information for runners.
Thanks... I remember hearing you couldn't walk. But what we went throught to get there was ridiculous.

Way to go!

Just have to find some runs in Toronto.
::yes:: Good luck!

Whew!! I was worried there was something that I did not know about...I have issues about pooping in public places LOL:rotfl2:

No you don't have to relieve yourself in public unless you choose too. Before the full several of us opted to use the bushes prior to the race. We walked to the edge of the woods and began "to irrigate the forest". It all got really awkward when I looked farther into the woods and realized I was face to face with a woman who was also avoiding the porta potty lines. That's not a fun way to meet people.

Do the smart phone apps have GPS? Or do I really need to get one of the other things?
Smartphones work great. Barry mentioned runkeeper it's great for the social aspect. Wahoo fitness is a great app because it can post to both Runkeeper and nikeplus.

Nikeplus has a tool called Smashrun (its a datavisualization tool for running) that can connect to it.

Runkeeper has a tool called notch that integrates with it.

If you use wahoo you can sign up for both runkeeper and nikeplus and track your runs in both systems for maximum flexibility.

I told Crash on Saturday to bring some TP... she looked at me like I was crazy. :lmao::lmao:

I don't there were any TP issues Sunday and no runner likes to carry superflous TP.

That is hilarious!!!!

Barry was taking pictures of people lined up at the woods. We saw plenty of ladies doing their business too. :rolleyes2

WHEW! Every potty was out. I stopped about mile 3 to relieve myself. Luckily, I wasn't in need of the TP. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I actually had that happen in 2010, some guy was stretching, about 15 feet into the woods in the parking lot at Epcot, wearing all dark clothes, in the exact spot I went to "irrigate the forest". I didn't see him at all. He's lucky he spoke up at the last second, is all I can say...

When are you going in Nov Paul? The girls want to go in Nov too.

Nov 5-12! :cool1:
